KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia--The Malaysian government is seeking to lure back its citizens who now work abroad.

Information technology and communication technology are among the targeted areas due to the pressing need for such services.

Malaysia requires 35,000 skilled workers in its IT and communications sectors alone, according to the government.

Last fall, Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin outlined several measures to create a pool of talent.

The proposed incentives included income tax exemptions on income that is earned abroad and brought back into the country within two years. In addition, all personal assets would be tax exempt, and family members born outside Malaysia--spouses and children--would be granted permanent resident status in six months.

Human Resources Minister Fong Chan Onn said all applications would be given a reply within one month of receipt.
