Welcome to Home Deals, where we pick out the best deals on things you need for your home, garden and beyond. Like our cousin, the Cheapskate, we'll give you a regular selection of cool deals, but we'll cover things like coffee makers, smart light bulbs, gardening tools and anything else your home or garden requires.

Can you hear it? That dull rumbling of a crowd on the move? That's the sound of Black Friday approaching, the day when retailers put out their best deals to get the holiday season started. Fortunately, we live in a (relatively) civilized age where the details of these deals are available in advance, so you can plan your online or in-person shopping. So, let's see what deals we can find on appliances big and small for Black Friday.

Large appliances

If you are looking for a stove, our list of the best stoves of 2016 is a great place to start, and there are deals out there on many of these models. Our top electric oven pick is the KitchenAid KSEG950, a sophisticated oven that cooked quicker than most, and Best Buy has it for an impressive $2,789. That's a $400 saving over the same stove at Amazon. For the cook on a smaller budget, our pick for the best gas range is the GE JGB700SEJSS, which is available at Sears for $649. That's $150 cheaper than most other places.

Several retailers are prominently advertising kitchen packages for Black Friday that can fit out an entire kitchen at once. Home Depot has a kitchen package of Samsung black stainless-steel fridge, electric cooker, microwave and dishwasher for $1,759, while JC Penney has a similar kitchen package of fridge, electric cooker, microwave and dishwasher for the patriotic price of $1,776 (see page 16 of the ad). Both of these packages include midrange Samsung models, including a 25-cubic-foot fridge, but the Home Depot version has a bottom freezer instead of a french door. Either of these are a good deal for someone just setting up home, or if you are refurbishing an older kitchen.

For those of a more high-end persuasion, there is also an attractive LG black stainless package for $2,499. This package includes the LG LFCS25426D 25.3-cubic-foot fridge. You'll have to brave the crowds to get some of them, though: the JC Penney ones are available on the 24th and 25th only, while the Home Depot one runs until the 30th of November.

If you just need a refrigerator, Best Buy has a sweet deal on the LG LFX25973D: $1,599 gets you this 24.1-cubic-foot bottom freezer refrigerator. Our top pick for overall refrigerator value is the Kenmore Elite 72482, a large 29.9-cubic-foot model. Sears is deeply discounting this for Black Friday, selling it at $2,399.99. That's a big price cut from the $3,999.99 that it was first sold at, and it's a great pick for a big family.

Small appliances

If your appliance needs are smaller, there are still plenty of good deals out there. Here are a few: we will add more as we come across them over the next few days up to Black Friday.

If you want to add some security features to your smart home, Lowes has a good deal on an Iris pack: for $109, you get a motion sensor plus door and window sensors and a panic button that can set off an alarm. It doesn't include the Iris Hub that you need to run the system, though.

Amazon has a sweet deal on a refurbished high-end KitchenAid mixer: you can pick up a refurbished Professional 6000D for $226.49, including a $10 off offer that you get by clicking on the "apply coupon" button. That's $120 off the new price for this powerful mixer.

Microcenter has a nice deal on the Nest thermostat: $99 for a refurbished unit. That's only available in the store, though: you can't order it online.
