The Apple Magic Mouse is the worst

Computing
Speaker 1: Apple is praised for its design. Prowes look at the iPhone, the iPad and the MacBook, all of these devices still influence virtually every other device out there. So many things end up looking like apple knockoffs. You know what design, nobody copies the apple magic mouse. You know why it's horrible. Let's talk about why the magic mouse is Apple's worst design inch product. That's the rundown. And this is AEZ. It's [00:00:30] been 57 years since the mouse was invented. And this is Apple's current offering. It's the magic mouse, which was first introduced in 2009. Here's what apple said about the product. Speaker 2: It's still a point and click mouse, but now the entire top surface of the mouse is, is basically it's a multi-touch sensor. Speaker 3: This is the smartest mouse we've ever made. There's a chip inside that acts essentially as a brain, as you put your fingers on the top shelf, it can determine where they're located, how [00:01:00] many you have and through your, or gesture your movement. It can determine what your intent is. That's Speaker 1: Great. It can determine my intent, huh? You know what? One of my intents are when I use a mouse, not to get horrible hand cramps because the input device is not designed for hands to rest on. This seems very odd for a company like apple. Check out this post on Reddit from several years ago, poster says they are a longtime fan of apple products and mentions that the mouse feels uncomfortable over long periods of time. [00:01:30] The poster then asks, am I holding the mouse wrong? Or is there a specific way in which I'm supposed to hold the mouse? There is not an ounce of sarcasm in this post, by the way, one helpful reply was don't rest your Palm on the magic mouse. Magic mouse is supposed to be held using the fingertip grip. If we look at that apple video, we just showed you. Speaker 1: Yeah, look at that. That person's Palm is on the desk. So perhaps that is the right way to hold the magic mouse. Fair enough. But one of Apple's biggest selling points [00:02:00] for all of its products is intuitiveness. You ever see video of babies using iPhones or iPads. There is this instant understanding of how to use the device should a magic mouse owner have to learn the fingertip grip. You decide one designer tried to fix the magic mouse with this accessory. It's a piece of silicone that sticks to the surface of the magic mouse. So you can have a more ergonomic grip. I haven't tried it, but it sounds like a good, however, this should not have to exist, but wait, there's more. These second generation magic mouse [00:02:30] featured an upgrade. A rechargeable battery was built in. Do you wanna charge this wireless device? Sure. Turn it over and insert a lightning cable perpendicular to the base of the device. Speaker 1: You have to give up the use of the mouse to charge it. Why is this? Can anyone think of a single reason why this is good for users of the device? And it's not like apple doesn't understand design, look at the magic track pad or keyboard. You can connect a cable to those devices, charge them and use them at the same time. [00:03:00] How difficult would it be to put a charging port on the front? You know, what's strange. Look at the first mouse ever from 1964, it looks like someone took a handrail hollowed out the bottom and added two pizza cutter wheels on the top. You've got a red button. The wire came out of the back, like a tail on a rodent of some kind. The wheel positioning will let the computer know the coordinates of the pointer. This design is from 1964. It's the first one. Speaker 1: Of course it's gonna look like that. Is it ergonomic? No. Look at the magic mouse. Again. [00:03:30] It resembles a sliver of soap. Why? After over 50 years of development, does the apple magic mouse seem as ergonomic as the first ever mouse. And what's it even more maddening is that apple has a history of mouse issues. Picture this 1998, the two top box office draws that the movies are saving private Ryan. And there's something about Mary two, nearly identical movies, apple introduces the apple USB mouse. It's got a design unlike any other. It's colorful to match the max. At the time it's got one large B, [00:04:00] it uses the connector of the future USB and its circular. This device was so bad that two years later, Steve jobs spent around three minutes in a Mac world, New York presentation on the hockey puck mouses replacement. Speaker 4: This is the worst mouse in the world. We'd like to change that. And today we are introducing a new mouse. Speaker 1: What's mind boggling is that over 20 years ago, apple knew what issues impacted people who used [00:04:30] a mouse. This pro mouse introduction included this slide fits any hand. So it's good for kids and adults accommodates any style. This is about how you click the mouse. The whole mouse is so acted as a button jobs mentions. It works for people who use one finger and those who plop their whole hand on it. So apple knows how to handle mouse things. This is wild, apple understands input. It makes some of the best track pads in the world. The iPhone from generation one was brilliant. A touch screen. [00:05:00] They'll use your fat little fingers on a tiny screen and it worked. Why does this device exist in its current form? On top of that, there's a world of competition in this space. So even if apple completely forgot everything and ever knew about mouse design, it could look at over 50 years of progress and competitors for inspiration is the magic mouse. Speaker 1: Really the worst designed apple product. What would be the competition? Apple pencil generation one. You remove a cap which reveals a lightning connector. Practically. [00:05:30] This kind of makes sense. You're using the pencil and it needs a charge quickly attach it to your iPad and get a boost. Sounds good. Is the design good? No. The second generation apple pencil fixes that weird connector thing is the and one pencil worse than the magic mouse. I don't think so. Mac pro accessories are on a different plane. $700 wheels, $300 feet. The designs are fine. The cost borders on polarity. However, they serve a function. The apple pro stand a thousand dollars. It costs more than [00:06:00] an iPhone. I think the Mac pro accessory argument applies here. Semi-functional design ridiculous pricing. Why is the magic mouse worse than the things I just mentioned? All of those other products are essentially accessories. Speaker 1: You don't need them. A mouse is critical for the use of a computer. The magic mouse is bundled with IMAX and map pros. Yes, you can get a track pad, but that's an extra 50 bucks. The magic mouse is the default pointing device. It's not ergonomic and can't be used while charging due [00:06:30] to its design. It even breaks things that the 2000 apple pro mouse tried to address. I would love to hear European. Just know that this video was not sponsored by Microsoft or log tech or whatever, big mouse companies out there throwing out money. By the way, while researching this, I found out that some of the first pointing devices for computers were light pens, track balls, and joysticks. I wonder what an apple joystick would look like an apple. I know you're watching this. So come on, fix the magic mouse. You fixed the pencil. You fix the map pro you can do it. [00:07:00] I believe in you. I'm IA Zachar and I'll see you online.
