Culture
On today's show, an amazing set of 3D-printed dresses made by our friend who made the spider dress. Ooh. A really cool prosthetic limb that is also 3D-printed that's winning awards in the UK. And Star Wars Episode 7 toys are about to be everywhere! Wooh! All up in your face, it's Tomorrow Daily. [MUSIC] Greetings, citizens of the Internet. Welcome to Tomorrow Daily, the best geek talk show in the known universe. I'm Ashley Esqueda. That's Khail Anonymous. All up in your face is a very weird catchphrase, but I'm just now realizing We use almost every episode. [LAUGH] I just, I want, I'm always- It's all up in your grill, but white person- Up in your grill, up in your face. Yeah, okay. Yeah. I tell people sometimes, I love your face, instead of, I love you. I'm like, I love your face. Yeah. You're the best. The rest of you, [NOISE]. Like a potato. [LAUGH] Love your faces, guys. Love your faces. But I like that. You can get that on a shirt. Just all up in your face. When I get excited about stuff, I want it all up in my face! I want to drown in it. It'd be great. So I want it to suffocate me with amazingness. Fair enough. So, with, with that, let's cue the headlines. [MUSIC] All right, so what's all up in your face today? Well, I think the Star Wars stuff is number one for me, but this is pretty cool too. We talk a lot about prosthetic limbs and making them less expensive for people, and of course, like for anybody who's still growing like kids who need prosthetic limbs. Well, this is pretty amazing, so a team called Open Bionics Just won the James Dyson Award in the UK with this prosthetic hand that they made called the Dextrous. And the Dextrous is really interesting because it's designed to specifically look as close to a human hand is possible, but through a 3D printer. So it's got a lot more smoothed-over and rounded contours in the hand. It's actually got, like, built-in knuckles, which is pretty cool. But again, like, it's meant to look as close to a human hand as possible for a 3D-printed Design. Whoa. So there are two different kinds of prosthetics. There are 3D printed hands that are myoelectric based. And those are the ones that have the sensors that look at muscle and say, ok, that's what I want to move, and those can be really expensive. Those can be tens of thousands of dollars. And then there's another kind of prosthetic hand which is a lot cheaper, but not as technologically advanced that use kinda a cord system to kinda pull and tighten like prosthetic fingers. Okay, what is this? This is on that side of things, low cost-wise, but they found a really interesting way To make it more technologically advanced. So they use steel cables as tendons inside this thing, and then attaches each one individually to motors that act like muscles. So each individual finger is powered by it's own little motor and metal cable. Which is awesome. It gives the hand finer degrees of control. It also, the motors can sense if something gets stopped by an object so it can grip something and realize, like "okay, I'm being stopped so stop gripping." So it's got a nice fine degree of grip that won't crush something. It's like firm but gentle. So here's the big part that makes it pretty amazing. They're saying that they can scan somebody's arm and have it ready to print, design it and everything in minutes. They can scan somebody's arm, and print it over 40 hours. So in two days, you can have a custom made 3D hand that's made off of a [UNKNOWN] system. And, remember what we were saying that my electric hand Can cost tens of thousands of dollars. This costs about 1,500 bucks. Wow! So super big deal, and looks really beautiful. They've done a really good job designing it, so here he is using it. They wanna sell this in 2016, but even better, and this is my favorite part of the whole story, They made all of this open source. So if you have a 3D printer and you need a prosthetic limb, and you have the ability to scan your arm and do all the stuff. If you wanna do all the leg work, you can actually print out your arm for free. See I love when they do good things just for good reasons. Yeah, good deeds. So this one the James [UNKNOWN] in UK award, it's moving on to like the global James Dyson Award, which I think has a forty some thousand dollar prize attached to it, which is pretty cool. And yeah, they're pretty excited, but good job! [APPLAUSE] Good job you guys, making low cost prosthetics. I always love stories like that just because anything we can make to help people's lives be a little easier. And promote that sort of thing too. Yeah. And give it away, they're literally giving it away for free open source wise, there are plans available on their site. pretty, pretty incredible. Pretty crazy. Okay, so, can we talk about -- this seems -- no, I'm not going to say that. Can we? Yeah we can. Well, let's -- you know what also has robotic hands? Star Wars. Star Wars. Luke has robotic hands. Luke. Anyway, making the transition into Star Wars Star Wars episode 7 is coming out this year in December, and as you know a big part of the Star Wars universe and world are the toys because no matter what one of the toys that comes out you're gonna want it wether it be a lightsaber or whatever. So start with episode 7 is doing a. Huge thing to launch their Star Wars Episode Seven toys. Here's is what they're doing. They're doing a live stream of unboxing that gonna last 18 hours, and it's gonna take place in 14 cities around the world. And 14 different unboxing Events. It's gonna be, it's gonna start off in Australia, where they're gonna box a few. Every location gonna have different toys. Okay, okay. So to see all the toys you have to watch all of them. You'd have to watch for- 18 straight hours. 18 hours. so it starts off- [LAUGH] In Australia on September. Second and it's going to go to 8pm on September 3rd in San Francisco. So with 18 hours of unboxing of different toys. You'll have to do the math on your own time if you don't live in California. Those are our time. So they're using maker studio. That's the cool part. Amazing. I don't know if you know Maker studio but it is the It is the MCN, or basically the sort of like YouTube brand of company that was bought by Disney a few years back for an obscene amount of money. Well, they're starting to use any of their influencers, any of their hosts, that have their own channels in those different areas to do the unboxings, which is- That's Pretty brilliant yea.>> So there you go as far as Las Angeles so this is for us. We have our own host they're going to in the YouTube space which is here in Las Angeles. Anthony Carboni and Andy [UNKNOWN]. They'll be doing commentary on boxing. So I had no idea- I guess they'll do like [CROSSTALK] between all the different while they get the next unboxer online and stuff. So kind of like to moderate and stuff. Yeah their going to moderate. Oh that will be fun! And kind of- Interviews maybe? And they're anchoring. Oh, anchoring, okay, yeah, perfect. Great way to describe it. So yeah, there you go. It's gonna be kind of their launch For their toys. Yeah. Well I know the toys is like Force Friday, right? That's the thing? September 4th. Yeah. September 4th is when all the toys are gonna be available. In retail. In retail, yeah. So, but since we have no idea whats coming out, No idea. That brings us to our hashtag of the day. You didn't see that coming, did you? There it is! If you had the Force, you'd know. And it's #TDUNBOX, so we wanna know what toy do you hope to see them unbox? Yeah, what's the toy? I'll go ahead and go first. I want that Rylo Ken lightsaber, the one with the red- Oh, the cross guards? Yeah, the cross guards. I love it. But I wanna see how they would even do that. Like, how would I get [CROSSTALK]. Cuz you know they have the ones where you flick it out and they come down and then do we have to flick sideways to get the other ones out, or? [LAUGH] That would be amazing and ridiculous. Yeah, so that's the one I'm interested in seeing how they do because I don't know much Much else, what about you? I think for me, I'm excited about Lego sets. Oh, I got another one, but go on. Lego sets and also, I know that they've teased, Spyro, you have the little site, we've talked about it during celebration, Spyro tease [UNKNOWN] So that is gonna be on my list, I think. [UNKNOWN] It better be on the fourth. Nope. Okay. So what I want I want one more thing and then we'll go to the next story. I want an old Han Solo action figure that goes ugh. With a cane and just mumbles and then the millennium Falcon breaks. Then it breaks it's leg. The Han Solo millennium falcon leg breaking action figure. Ug okay. Matt I would pay good money for that to be honest. So we wasted enough time so TDM box let us know. TDM box alright. That one will be really good i'm sure they got some good ideas for that. Yeah you can get silly with it it doesn't have to be serious. Alright really quickly let's talk about Anouk Wipprecht which our good friend Anouk who's back in the news. She made the 3D printed spider dress we talked about at CES. Okay we were all so terrified and intrigued by. She is now partnering up with Audi to create four dresses, the Capsule Collection, based on the A4, which is one of their new cars, one of the newer designs. So this is a projection dress. They are all inspired by the A4. The projection map dress is inspired by Audi's virtual cockpit. So that's an actual projection on the dress. So they're projecting onto the bodice of the dress while they're showing off this virtual cockpit. And then there are two other dresses that are made as shields. And then the one you're seeing right now is actually created with the same 60 watt head lamp That are made in the car. So she made a dress out of the A4's head lamp. Flashing someone in style. Yeah, so it's bringing a whole new meaning to the word flashing somebody with your Your clothes. So fun stuff. Super custom made. She scanned those four models' bodies exactly. I mean, they're made exactly to their specifications, the whole nine yards. She always goes all out on these things. She's so cool. She is so cool. I'll never be that cool. Cuz we follow news stories. Like we'll follow Box and dynamics, and a little down to the little robot. Yeah. But this has been my favorite fashion one to follow. [INAUDIBLE] The fact that she's still doing it, and then she's getting sponsorships. And she always thinks of new ideas. That's the other thing I really like. She's always thinking of something new, and really not afraid to like go out on a limb and make something crazy which I really like and I appreciate it all the way. Very creative. So super cool. Nice job. Really, really rad. Okay, that's it for our headline. We're going to come right back with into it because it's Thursday and then we're going to do three photographers of the day because we did not have a hash Of the day, and then Khail and I are actually going to just fly up out of our seats like rockets and fly to Pax. So it's gonna get real exciting up in here, so don't click away, it's Tomorrow Daily. [BLANK_AUDIO] [MUSIC] Welcome back to the show. We've returned. I know you're really really good at that. I'm very predictable in that way. I'm very predictable. Oh, you know, it's a daily show. That was almost like a lip sync battle. That was amazing. Dub smash. Can we dub smash? You're way thrown off by that. [LAUGH] I am, no, I really enjoyed it so much. Okay so it is a Thursday We like to talk about the things that we are super-duper into which is why this next segment's called into it. [MUSIC] That's life. Okay, I'll go first. I love the Ski Freak when I was a kid. Oh man, Ski Breeze was the best. Ski Breeze was great, because you're a skier and then you ge eaten by the yeti. Well now there's a game called mystery yeti fast food where you play the Yeti and you got to Eat the skiers, and it's great. It's adorable, I want to, I just want to play this all day long. It's free, you can go play it on the web. It's super awesome, very good. Can he get him? Ar. It says that it calls humans like burritos on sticks, which I really like. It's adorable. But the Yeti also has an energy level. So if you run too much, your stomach empties. And then you can die of exhaustion if you don't eat enough skiers. That's really hard. It is hard. It's not easy. This is a crazy run. This is producer Logan playing. It gets a little weird. He starts running into trees, I dunno what's going on here. Well at least producer Logan is good at rocket. League. He is really good at Rocket League. So we'll give him that. So you gotta run around, you gotta eat the skiers, it keeps a tally. Jesus Logan! [LAUGH] You just keep running into these trees, it's crazy. Good God. But I do like that they show you that they're coming. Running like this gears are coming down the hill by putting a stomach. A little cute stomach with a smiley face on it. You gotta chase the people.>> Oh my god get him yes.>> You did it. But yea so it's really great. If you can go get it. It's on biggreenpillow.itch.io. It's this little design company who they went to an event where the theme was- Something about the monster within, or something like that. So they decided to put- Oh my God. Flip SkiFree around and call it Mr. Yeti's Fast Food. So if you look up Mr. Yeti's Fast Food, you can play it on the web for free. Or you can actually download it. You can do it for any price. It's like name-your-price download, for Windows 10. So they have that available on Windows 10 if you're looking for a fun little game to have. But yeah, flipping out on 10, Mr. Eddie's Fast Food. There you go. [SOUND] That's what I'm into. Are you better at it? I mean it looks hard. The controls are, cuz you're in the snow, so they make it a little flighty. The controls are a little flighty. So they do make it tough. Always from the outside looking in, you can criticize somebody if you haven't tried it yourself. I understand. I think it's meant to be a little slide, so it can be tough to navigate around the trees tightly cuz the skiers Are like very adept at skiing. All right. So am I into this week and or this weekend? And likely your's too, you just didn't say it. Is Pax prime. Which is happening in Seattle Washington. This is a big gaming convention. This is not to be confused with E3. This is different. E3 is an announcement and release of all these games. PAX is a celebration of gaming and gamers. It's open to the public. You get to meet a lot of your favorite YouTube gaming celebrities. You get to hang out. There's cosplay. You can play some of the games that are coming out soon. Yeah. I mean, it's not like you're gonna get something that nobody's ever played before. Cuz E3 and other game places have those. You can buy stuff. They have upstairs areas where you can play old games. They have D&D decks. Cable tops everywhere. Cable tops, card games. It is a celebration of all things gaming, it's a blast. If you're into any of that stuff and you ever get a chance, go check it out! You gotta go. Go check it out! It's a fun time, there's always after parties which you can crash. Really great energy. This'll be my third? I haven't gone in a long time. Mm-hm. But it's always one of my favorites. This is my first PAX Prime. You've been to East, PAX East. I've been East and South, Yeah. But I have not yet been to PAX Prime, so this will be really fun for me. I'll only be there for a couple days, but. You know what Ashton's gonna like about this? There is a huge indie game section. Indies. Huge indie game section with a bunch of weirdos. Like, the people that make indie games are weird and in a good way. Like there was one [CROSSTALK] a guy that was dressed up in a Barker costume and he was like, step right up and play my game. He had the little straw hat and- You know what? I'd step right up and play that game because I find that fascinating. Yeah. It takes a special kind of a person to think of a game like I am bread or mystery Eddie's fast food. Yeah, Octodad was for sure [UNKNOWN] Cuphead I mean come on you have to be really creative or really weird in a good way. I feel like cup [UNKNOWN] is a little bit above where the, this is grainy- Super, yeah. Yeah, but they're always a lot of fun. But I like to think of PAX as like, it's the public's E3. For sure. And it's really the only, I would say the only convention, cuz you can't even really at Comic-Con, this is the only convention, if you love video games this is the one you go to. Yeah if you are going, hit up either of us. We're going to be there. I'm going to be walking around. I haven't decided whether I'm going to do a meet up or not. You should. Everybody does a meet up and I'm just like -- I don't want to sog up people's day. I don't know. Here's what we want you to do. I think this is a better plan. run up to us like we are really rich, famous You Tubers and make a big deal out of us on the show floor and they just trick other people into making us think we're important and ourselves. I would rather you come up and shout at me like you are totally angry and get everyone's attention to think oh my God those people are fighting. But you don't want to get anybody kicked out. Well I don't want to feel like I'm super famous because I'm not. Well no, but I don't want to feel that way. I want other people to think that. Okay. To trick people into thinking we're important. Including us. Just yell at me. Yeah, just yell at Cale. It's fine. If you see me, I'll be doing it. I'll be like "Cale, you're the worse!" Tweet at us. We'll tell you the tweets at the end of the show. We gave it away, but I think people probably already know. Okay guys, do you want to talk about you? Let's talk about our phonetographers of the day. You guys have that song stuck in your head, and now I'll never get it out. I'm going to hear it the whole way home. They have no idea what you're talking about. It's okay. We don't have a user feedback today because we didn't have a hashtag yesterday, because of our travel schedule for pack. So that being said, we decided to pick three phone topographers for today and we're going to go through them right now. Play them all at the same time. No, let's play Kalyan first. He sent this in. I tried to pick ones that weren't hiking ones. [LAUGH] So just for you, Cal. I tried to pick ones that weren't hiking ones. He said, this is Kalyan from India. Recently I have had a trip to Malaysia. Beautiful country, awesome food. I I feel like most phone-topgraphers are nature pics. So I'm not sending any nature pics. Yeah. In spite taking a few really awesome pics of Malaysian landscapes. I took this picture with my one plus one, walked to those towers after having a long, humid tiring day just to take the photo. Love your show. Wish you made it longer with more news. I want to go. Those aren't the tallest Building. I don't think so. In the world are they? No. The tallest building in the world is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Oh. Okay. Yeah. But I want to say that these were for a while, maybe. Okay. Yeah. But, what movie was it where they were there? I think it was Mission Impossible. Mission Impossible? Yeah. I think you're right. But that's a very cool shot. Yeah. Super awesome. And then Brock wrote in and he sent this He said this photo was taken at a Lady Antebellum concert with my iPhone 6. Grammy award winning Lady Antebellum. That's right. Singers of the hit smash Go ahead. Where Are You Now. Where are you now. Yeah, Lady Antebellum, super popular country music act. And, apparently, they put on a good show. So, I've never been, but I always heard they put on a good show. Country music always puts on a really good show. But yeah, super cool stuff though. That was a great picture. Thank you, Brock. And then lastly we have Scott, who sent in this photo, and he says This picture was taken over the weekend while me and my kids were camping out at Elephant Rock campground in Red River, New Mexico. I just thought it was one of the coolest caterpillars I had ever seen. We dubbed him "The Monster of Elephant Rock". I was about to call him a monster. There you go, you're not alone. You have my permission to use the photo. I love the show. Can't wait to try Rare Replay. Thanks for all you do, Scott. That looks like, I don't even know what, it looks like a plant. A hairy plant. I can't imagine in what timeline I would ever want to touch that or get close in any way. I think that's exactly what it wants you to feel. It seems like it would be one of those things where if you got close enough it would jump at you, attach, and then suddenly absorb you. I don't know. The really cool picture.>> It would be just like those creatures in Star trek where they take over their brain.>> troubled.>> No they drop in the little roaches into your brain or whatever yea, through your ear. But anyway that was terrifying and also really cool. It was an awesome picture. All right, hurry up so we can go to [INAUDIBLE] All right, so if you guys want to send in your phone-tography to be featured, you can email us tomorrow@cnet.com. Send your device you took it with, permission to use the picture, and the picture itself. And tell us a little story about it You can follow us on social media. We're Tomorrow Daily on all the big sites like Twitter and Facebook, but get to know us personally, because that's way more fun. I'm @AshelyEsqueda on Twitter. And I'm @MattKelemen. And now it's time for us to fly away. They're gonna add it in post, the visual effects. We're gonna email it up to graphics. But we're gonna fly right now, away, for pack, so are you ready? Yeah. All right, bye guys, be good humans. We'll see you guys on Monday. In post? Yeah, in post, go. [MUSIC] [BLANK_AUDIO]
