Speaker 1: Were you lucky enough to get a PlayStation five and now maybe you're getting bored with the color? Well, you can swap the face plate. Sony's got PlayStation five face plates. I was curious about how they worked. I checked them out and here's how you put 'em on.
Speaker 1: Well, first of all, good luck, a PlayStation five, but also these face plates. Remind me of a tradition in the kind of console customization territory, which I did [00:00:30] a long time ago. The Xbox 360 had swappable face plates and there were cool wood grain ones and things like that. Sony only has a couple of colors. There's no wood grain, unfortunately, but, but besides the white, which is the existing PlayStation five color, you can also get them in red or you can get them in black. The face plates are meant to hook on and snap off pretty easily. And I appreciate that the PlayStation five has this kind of modular feel. In fact, by snapping off those plates, that's how you get to the extra SSD slot [00:01:00] to install an M two S S D drive to expand your storage, which I also tried. And it's pretty easy once you get used to the unscrewing process, um, which I like the fact that you can upgrade the nice thing about getting a controller.
Speaker 1: That's a different color or Joycons that are different colors, is that you may need an extra controller or yours may have worn down. So there's a real fun function of that. Plus having a different color controller means you can keep track of which one is which in case you have the one that you don't want anybody to touch [00:01:30] this color faceplate thing is all cosmetic. And I kind of like the color of the PlayStation five as it is the white and the black. Very cool, very iconic. Um, but again, I was curious to swap them out. You have to pay $55 to get these plates, which is the other part on top of an already expensive console. 55 bucks is the cost of a game controller. And so, you know what? I really want to buy that just to customize the system, if you are desperate to, or you're curious, [00:02:00] the process again is pretty simple.
Speaker 1: These snap on, on plates, I felt a little weird at first, snapping them on and off people who have done this a lot are gonna laugh at me, but it does feel almost like you're gonna break something following the instructions. You have to lift it up at one corner and then slide it out. It just kind of goes against the grain of what I'm used to. I don't like flexing technology, uh, and bendings something upwards. I guess the comforting part is if something really went wrong, you could get a replacement [00:02:30] face plate, but I'm not wild about it. You also have to unscrew the stand. If you've got the stand, then you snap them on. Snapping them on is a little bit easier. You kind of do it a little bit diagonally to the side. Uh, there are instructions on Sony's website are, um, their instructions that come in the box and then you're set, the plastic plates are matte colored.
Speaker 1: Um, they do scratch a little bit. So be careful. I think I already scratched one by scuffing it on the side of something else. They're plastic. Uh, [00:03:00] the red is a, is a kind of, almost like a brick red. The black is like a PlayStation console black, and you could even mix and match. You could have one that has a red on top black on the bottom or white, red, whatever you want. You just can't get wood grain. Um, there isn't much else to say about these. Um, but I do like a trend of taking something you own and being able to customize it. Uh, remember when phones used to have easier swappable, uh, backs and things like, you know, flea markets you'd buy extra ones. That's like a million years ago. [00:03:30] Now you can buy covers for your phones. But again, I like that feeling for the PlayStation five.
Speaker 1: And I do appreciate that it has some feeling of like a PC modularity, but I don't think you need to get color face plates or, or plates freer console, be happy with the cool PlayStation five, unless you want it to color, match your room or some sort of other decor. In fact, there aren't plates that match all of the controller colors that so many now makes for the PlayStation five. That'd be kind of cool if they went it even Wilder [00:04:00] with them. Yeah. That's what the PlayStation five colored plates look like. Uh, in case you are curious and, uh, and wanna try 'em out for yourself. If you have comments, leave 'em down below I'm Scott Stein. Thanks for watching.
