The HP MediaSmart Server LX195 is a great network storage and backup device for home users. The device offers stellar performance, and great backup and remote access options for a reasonable price.
[ Music ] ^m00:00:07 >> Hello this is Dong Ngo CNET.com and have we here the MediaSmart Server LX195 from HP. This product won our Editor's Choice Award, and it didn't win for no reason. First of all, it's the fastest NAS server we've ever reviewed to date. Secondly the LX195 offers a great way to back up computers within your network. It can pull the backup's by itself, and it can even wake the machine up from standby mode to the backup. And last but not least, it comes with many great features and it's remote connection works really well, and is oh so very easy to set up. So let's take a closer look. The LX195 comes in a simple package with nothing but status lights on the front, a Gigabit Ethernet port and 4 USB ports on the back. These USB ports can be used to house extra storage. Unfortunately they would not work with printers. Also on the back is a power button. We found this button a little too sensitive, and actually it's located close to the ports. It's very easy to press on it accidentally, and therefore turn the NAS off. On the inside the NAS is actually a small PC running Windows home server 2003. It's powered by an Intel Atom processor running at 1.6 gigahertz, and 1 gigabyte of RAM. You can actually open its case to increase the amount of RAM to 3 gigabytes, or replace the internal hard drive. Although Atom is a rather low performance CPU, mostly used in Mac Books, it's still the fastest found among home NAS servers. The best thing about the LX195 is it's price. It can be found online for around 380 dollars, which is a great deal considering it's included storage and what it has to offer. For more information on how good of a NAS server the LX195 is, check out the full review at CNET.com.
