"'GIF' vs. 'JIF'"
will start after this message from our sponsors.
'GIF' vs. 'JIF'
We have something we got to debate.
-We have-- something came up in the pre-show that we got to really get to the bottom of.
-I'm alone on one team.
It's me against you guys.
-I think it's Team Emily versus Team 404.
-'GIF' versus 'JIF'.
-Well, let's ask the chat room.
-You guys, in the chat room, you know those little animated video objects?
-Do you call them 'GIF' or 'JIF'?
-Here is why I think it's 'GIF'.
-We-- we're in agreement here.
-Me and Jeff.
I think it's-- I think it's 'GIF'.
You guys can have like 30 seconds to give your--
-Here is why I think it's 'GIF'.
-Because 'GIF' stands for graphic user interface, not 'jraphic user interface'.
Like it's not like a really tall interface, like it's graphical.
So, that's why it's 'GIF'.
-Welcome to Juraphic Park.
That's what I always thought.
I don't know.
I could be wrong.
I actually-- I actually always heard that it was both, like you could interchange them.
-Jif is for freaking peanut butter.
-So, right now--
-just like the first ten people, it's like 90 percent 'GIF'.
-Just to let you know.
-Well, guys, I'm-- you can pronounce it however you want.
You can pronounce anything however you want.
-So, you're saying it's interchangeable?
-You can say America as America if you want.
-But it's actually America.
-It's not-- it's not--
-And this is actually 'JIF'.
-And let me explain to you why.
Our friends over at Gizmodo.
No, but they have a thing about this.
And the first found instance of the,
like explanation of the 'GIF' graphics-- you're right about this, graphic interchange format--
-comes from a CompuServe FAQ.
Know what CompuServe?
-F-A-- a FAQ, like an FAQ?
Oh, you could say fact if you want.
The GIF, graphics interchange format, pronounced 'JIF' was designed by CompuServe, and the official specification released in June in 1987.
So, they say it there that that's how you pronounce it.
-That's none-official, though.
That's not like the Webster's coming out-- Oxford coming up you like--
this is from the same FAQ.
The pronunciation of gif is specified in the gif specification to be 'JIF' with a 'J', as in jiffy, rather than 'GIF', which most people seem to prefer.
-This does seem strange because the 'G' is from the word graphics, and not 'jraphics'.
-as you said.
-If you look up the Merriam-Webster pronunciation, they have dual pronunciation.
The Oxford English Dictionary--
-says both are acceptable.
-I am not about to go back on
20 years of mispronouncing an image file.
-I think we're all in agreement.
You could go either way with it.
-This is really confusing.
-And this really doesn't make that much sense.
-when I am referring to like the file, now, you guys are gonna-- I'll lose all credibility.
-But when I'm referring to like--
-Let's watch it all unravel.
Guys, you just stop-- you just shut over now.
But when I'm referring to the like just the image file, I call it a 'GIF'.
But when I'm like, "Oh,
-that's my favorite gif" or like "I'm gonna send you a gif", I'm responding in
-How dare you?
I shouldn't have admitted it.
-You shouldn't have.
You have all your credibility just--
-went out the freaking window.
Let's move on to another topic.
-Oh, my God.
-Let's forget this ever happened.
