Get to Know Apple's New AirPods
Speaker 1: Apple has just revealed the new regular airports. And they actually have a lot in common with other apple pods, headphones and earbuds. Like these let's break it down and talk all things AirPods
Speaker 1: From 179, us dollars. The regular AirPods actually look pretty much exactly like you would expect [00:00:30] a hybrid of the original AirPods design and the AirPods pro to look like. So rather than having long stems that come down from your ear, the stems are a little bit short, just like the AirPods pro, but unlike the higher end earbuds that cost $250, the new AirPods don't have interchangeable tips. That means like the original pods. They simply rest in your ear canal. Some people have issues with the original design of the AirPods falling out of their ears [00:01:00] or dislodging. If they, you, something active apple has tried to get around this by redesigning the air airports to have a more of a contour finish. Although it's really hard to know whether or not these are gonna sit perfectly in your ears until we can actually get hands on with them.
Speaker 1: Obviously, if you wanted something like interchangeable tips, like the AirPods pro, you're gonna have to go that route and spend a little bit more money because these air pods do not have tips attached to them. Now, the controls on the new AirPods are very similar to what we've seen on [00:01:30] the AirPods pro there are essentially clickable stems and you can do things like fast forward between tracks, answer calls and reject calls, of course, and activate your voice assistant. And of course, with your voice assistant, I am not gonna say the name of Apple's assistant because you know what I mean? And also I don't want to accidentally invoke yours. You'll be able to use your voice to call on the assistant, to do all of your regular tasks, like play music and make calls. Of course, the important thing is how these are [00:02:00] actually going to sound.
Speaker 1: And I would expect that they're gonna sound hopefully a lot better than the original airports. Maybe not to the same level as something like the airports pro or even the airports. Max, obviously not. Let's not get crazy now, but apple has said that there are new custom dynamic drivers and amplifier on board. So hopefully the base response is going to be stronger than the original AirPods fingers crossed. Anyway. Now the other element that really goes hand in hand with the sound quality is how they [00:02:30] fit in your ears. So obviously to get the best sound quality out of these, as well as the best base response, you are gonna want to have these earbuds really sit snugly in your ear canal. And again, your mileage will vary depending on the shape of your ear. And we just don't know yet how universal that's going to be.
Speaker 1: So stay tuned for that. Now these also borrow the same adaptive equalizer functionality that we've seen on the AirPods pro and max, and that's essentially tuning the sound profile to your custom ear shape. [00:03:00] And the sounds you're listening to for supposedly the most accurate audio fidelity and reproduction of the music that you're listening to. So it's nice to see that trickle down feature appear on the new pods. The other trickle down feature that we are getting is of course, spatial audio from the more expensive airports pro and it's max. Now this feature was originally introduced on the AirPods probe back in 2020, around this time, last year with the introduction of iOS 14. Now this gives you a virtual [00:03:30] surround sound experience, and it basically makes it feel like sounds are coming from more around you rather than just in front of you using dynamic head tracking.
Speaker 1: So if you turn your head, you're gonna be able to hear different elements of sound following you. And it really does have an immersive feel, especially when you're listening to supported tracks on say, apple music mastered in Doby Atmos, for example, or 5.1 and 7.1 mastered surround sound in say certain supported apps like [00:04:00] apple TV plus of course, and there are other apps too, that support, uh, the spatial audio function such as HBO max. So you're getting it across music, TV shows and movies for video and phone calls. The new airports are actually getting HD FaceTime, calling quality through a new AAC, E L D Kodak for speech, a lot of acronyms going on there, but hopefully that's going to improve the sound quality of your FaceTime calls. And of course for your [00:04:30] regular phone calls, there hopefully should be some benefits as well. Now there is going to be a new mesh and that's covering the microphone.
Speaker 1: That's hopefully gonna help reduce some wind is if you are taking phone calls outside among the other laundry list of features onboard the air pods include things like IPX four water resistance. This means that they are splash resistance. And of course you can spray water on them, get them sweaty in the gym. I don't know what you do with your earbuds, but you know, they should be fine if you just get a little bit [00:05:00] of moisture on them. Uh, that being said, the original pods, the first and second generation actually had no water resistance rating. We did our own water tests on these, threw them in the washing machine. They actually survived and were still usable. They didn't sound as good, but you know, they were a little bit more water resistant than Applegate them credit for, but it is nice to see that now the actual air pods are gonna be the same caliber of water resistance as the AirPods pro as I P X for [00:05:30] now, of course, battery life gets an improvement.
Speaker 1: Where would we be without being able to listen to our air? Budds all day now, unfortunately it's not gonna be an all day affair with the AirPods. Uh, you are going to get though a little bit of battery lifetime than the originals. So up from five hours, it's now six hours of constant listening time at around 50% volume. You might be able to push that a little bit more depending if you listen to your music a little bit more quietly, we might get slightly less if you're listening more lovely for example, but we'll do our own battery tests and [00:06:00] really see if those numbers kind of meet up to apples claims. Now, if you remember the AirPods pro and they give you five hours of listening time or four and a half hours, roughly if you have active noise cancellation turned on, that's the other thing we need to talk about on the AirPods is that there is no active, no noise cancellation.
Speaker 1: Now that's the feature on the pro and the max that basically blocks out the outside world blocks out certain frequencies, and really does a good job of immersing you into whatever you're listening to. Particularly [00:06:30] advantageous. If you do a lot of commuting on a block out things like a rumbling bus or a train, or even on a plane now, because of the price, the AirPods do not have this feature. If you do want active noise cancellation, you're gonna want to have to look at the AirPods pro or even the max, but you know, $550, even with price reductions lately, it's still expensive, not gonna lie. Um, and the other thing is that the new AirPods don't have apple transparency mode. The AirPods definitely [00:07:00] don't need transparency mode because they kind of have it naturally built in. If you think about it, there is no real tight seal.
Speaker 1: That's doing passive noise cancellation. So like the original AirPods, you'll still be able to hear some your, of your surroundings. Uh, and you won't necessarily need to take one earbud out if you wanna have a conversation. Although I kind of advise you do it can be a little bit rude having a full on conversation with both of your earphones in all right, let's go back to charging. I know I'm giving you a full laundry [00:07:30] list of things here, but there is a lot to take in the case itself is going to charge wirelessly and in a surprising move, it is gonna support safe charging, regular Chi wireless charging. And of course, regular lightning cable charging as well. And all up the case will give you about 30 hours of listening time. So for $179, it's actually a lot of competition at this particular price point.
Speaker 1: I'm really interested to see how these are actually gonna stack up against lot of the other [00:08:00] wireless Bluetooth earbuds at this particular price range. If there's anything you'd like me to compare them to, you can drop me a comment down below and I will see what I can do for you, cuz I love comparing things. It's kind of fun. The other thing is if you are looking for a set of AirPods, the other features to be aware of if you are an iOS user, which term is assuming you probably are. If you're looking at airports are things like quick switching functionality. So that's the feature. If you're signed into the same apple ID, you'll be able to move between devices [00:08:30] fairly seamlessly. Even though for me, I'd say it doesn't work a hundred percent of the time. There's also those quick connectivity features. When you say open the case, you'll immediately see pop up on your selected device and they should pair automatically.
Speaker 1: But the one thing that I really wish that these did have, and this just goes for all Bluetooth, earbuds and headphones that are coming out, like please let's start adding multipoint Bluetooth connectivity. This just means you're gonna be able to sign simultaneously connect, say a laptop and a phone and [00:09:00] you don't have to worry about is it connected? Is it not? You'll hear it. And you'll be like, okay, both of them are connected. I can switch between them really, really seamlessly. And I don't have to constantly either be checking that it's changed seamlessly or going into your Bluetooth settings and, and switching manually. So that's just a general please. All manufacturers. If you're listening, please add that because it's actually really useful. Hey, thanks so much for watching. I hope this was helpful to give you a Roundup of everything new in the third generation [00:09:30] airports. You can find more information down in the description below things like latest pricing, where you can find them as well as all of the information from the apple 2021 October event called unleashed. Maybe you're watching this in 2022 and you're like, I wanna do some time travel. Let's go back and see what happened. Well, those links are down there as well. I will catch you next time and thanks for watching.
