>> Hello, this is Dong Ngo for CNET.com and today we'll take a look at the G-Drive mini Triple from G-Technology. This is the newest drive to join the pocket sized external hard drive bandwagon we've been reviewing. And it was getting kind of crowded, we still want to run and comment for a few good reasons. On the outside, the G-Drive stands out thanks to its rugged design aluminum casing, which is also its cooling solution. Though covered in metal the drive still feel light just around 9 or 10 ounces. It has no fan, so it will work very silently. We don't know yet how much heat it will generate, but hopefully it will manage to stay cool as all these metal should have dissipated the heat. The drive featured all three connection types for a data: USB 2.0, FireWire 400 and FireWire 800. This is definitely a nice touch, though not new. Other drives have that same features too, like the OWC Mercury, but the Mercury is quite a bit bulkier. To its credit though, the Mercury does offer the largest storage space among pocket-sized external hard drive for now. The G-Drive on the other hand is rather modest in this regard, offering only 200 Gigabyte. However, it does something else that none of its peers got. This is the first drive that features 7200 rpm internal hard drive as opposed to 5400 rpm found in all other drives we've run in to. This means, its true performance can potentially be better, which remains to be seen by the way. Like the Mercury, the G-Drive is also bus-powered, meaning its data cables work also as power adaptors storing power directly from a computer. It still has a power port for a separate adaptor though. This is just in case some of you still have old machines of which the port do not provide enough juice to power the drive. Unfortunately, you then would have to call G-Technology for the adaptor itself because it does not come with the drive. The G-Drive is available for $279. That's about $1.4 per gigabyte. It's quite high. In the fact that it is the only drive that has a higher rpm. It might be worth it. For the price the G-Drive also comes with a traveling pouch. There's a cable for every connection type. That's probably all you need to get started. The drive works with both Macs and PC platforms, but it's pre-formatted for OS X. You can also find other versions of the drive equipped with 5400 rpm internal hard drive of sizes ranging from 160 Gigabyte to250 Gigabyte. For more information on how the drive performs, especially if the higher rpm justify its higher cost. Come back to CNET.com for our in-depth review. Again my name is Dong Ngo and this has been the First Look at the G-Drive mini Triple from G-Technology.
