eMachines EL1300G-01w
>> Hi I'm Rich Brown, Senior Editor for cnet.com. Today we're going to take a look at the eMachines EL1300G-01W. So this is not a bad looking little system, but it's also one of the most inexpensive PC's you can find in the mainstream market. It goes for 300 dollars and it's actually fairly fully featured for its price. It has a DVD burner, a media card reader, it will do pretty much all the simple stuff that you might want from say a net top or a net book. That said though the system is still very, very slow. It has a pretty slow single core AMD processor inside of it, only two gigs of RAM and Windows Vista basic. That means it's fine for simple tasks like web browsing, but as soon as you go to encode a movie or copy over a large amount of files, you're going to find that you really want a faster PC. So we recommend this as maybe a second or even a third system for your home that will just basically function as a dumb terminal to get online. Now around the back it's also very simple. You have VGAF for video, a couple of USB ports, standard wired Ethernet, as well as analog audio and old school mats and keyboard inputs. But you'll see there's no DVI no HDMI, no eSATA. Inside the case you can see it's pretty paired down as well. It's a slim tower design so it can only take half-height expansion card, but even then you only get a single 1X PCI Express slot here. There is actually room for another PCI card but there's no slot so you're kind of out of luck. Now the single slot here is occupied by a modem. If you want to get rid of that, that's pretty much your only expansion. There's a hard drive bay here underneath the DVD drive, and there's also 2 memory slots and they both are occupied as well. Overall we think you're better spending a little bit more money because you get a pretty significant jump of performance if you spend $50 or $100 more than this system. But if you really are looking for a system you can just plug it in, get online and leave it at that, this system will definitely get the job done. So I'm Rich Brown, this is the eMachines EL1300G-01W.
