Disney's D23 Expo brings Star Wars, Marvel, theme parks together (Tomorrow Daily 226)

On today's show, robotic surgery might get a little cheaper in the future. A stroller that is going to follow you around with your baby in it. And a bunch of Disney news from a million Disney movies. Well it's been a very long weekend and there has been a lot of news happening, so let's hit the headlines [MUSIC] [NOISE] I don't know if you know what D23 is, random user person on the internet but D23 is the big giant Disney convention that happens down here in California. More specifically in Anaheim, right next to Disneyland. Fair enough. Convenient. There was. Huge announcements. There's big announcements every year but this year was particularly happy with, like, the inclusion of announcements like Incredibles Two. And they showed off a Finding Dory poster. Why is Pixar, you made me laugh. Yeah, what, what, what? You made me laugh, your tweet. You were, like, this is all I see: sequel, sequel, sequel, sequel. Original content. Good Dinosaur was, like, the only one they had and then they were, like, We're doing another Pirates of the Caribbean and they're like yay. And you're like we're bringing back Orlando Bloom because he's not busy doing anything else. That's right. But there was a lot of great stuff too. They had some announcements for things like Shanghai Disney which we've talked about on the show before. They talked about the feel of the more like the trod rollercoaster and stuff like that They also announced there wasn't gonna be any huge Star Wars announcements is what they said but they did have some huge Star Wars announcements. Yeah, yeah. Including the fact that they're going to be adding an expanded Star Wars areas to Disneyland and Disney World. They're gonna have a Toy Story Land which you just saw. I don't know what that Frozen Ever After thing is. That is a stupid [INAUDIBLE] ride.>> Oh, it's like a little. No, I don't think it's a ride. It's an experience or whatever. That [UNKNOWN] [UNKNOWN] Frozen experience. Alright, let it go. Okay, so they're also going to have a Oh, that's the avatar land they're doing at Animal Kingdom. Its almost done. They're getting there Okay, cool. Well, Animal Kingdom needs as many rides as it can get. That's some shock talk They're also going to have signature attractions, quote unquote. The ability to pilot a Hans Solo storied Millennium Falcon space ship on a secret mission in an epic Star Wars adventure. I like it. So, so that's pretty cool. They've got an Iron Man experience Basically they're making experience for every single property that they have- Smart. That's popular. And then onto movies, they announced that Colin Trevorrow, who directed Jurassic World, is going to be doing Star Wars episode Seven. No. Nine. Yes. Episode 7's already almost done. Start with episode 9. So 8 was done by Ryan Johnson, who did Looper. Yes. And then J.J. Abrams did that. I thought J.J. Abrams was gonna be in the mix again, but I guess new director every time. He's gonna direct the Star Wars Justice League. No, I don't know. But there's J.J. Abrams motion with his hands. He's pretty good at that. They also showed off the cast for Rogue 1. If you don't remember, there's going to be a Star Wars movie every year, with an episode title being every other year. One of the Star Wars series that they're going to start is Rogue 1. They brought Felicity Jones. Forest Whitaker. Mads- - Oh, the guy who plays Hannibal. Mads Mikkelsen See? And Alan Tudyk, who's gonna be playing a mo-cap character apparently. People are really excited about Alan Tudyk in space again. Who isn't excited about Alan Tudyk? He needs to be in space. He's awesome. So, lots of great stuff. More Dr. Strange info, but no actual visuals because they haven't started filming it yet. But, yeah there you go. [CROSSTALK] By the way no timetable on when any of those lands or anything are going to be produced. The Parks. So, you went. I did, I went yesterday, I was at D23, I went to the Disney Interactive Panel, I got to see the game stuff. So I got to see Kingdom Hearts Three. All right! They announced there would be a Big Hero Six Land, which was really exciting. Where? In Kingdom Hearts Three. Oh, okay. Like there would be a world that was, San Fransokyo. Like that would be one of the levels that Sora gets to go and you can [UNKNOWN] and everything. And then saw, they had a full size person in costume that was Beymax come up on stage, but it was a really good Beymax costume that had the head that popped up and down and it blinked and stuff. And it was adorable. I couldn't belive my own eyes, it felt like I was really seeing the movie. That was awesome. And then I saw Battlefront, they had Battlefront, they showed off some footage, they showed off the new Darth Vader PS4. Cool. So cool. They gave two away to people in th audience. There was a kid that won one, and then they were like, Check under your seats. It was like being on Oprah. It was weird. Were they really under the seat? Yeah. They had two people- How do people not just walk in and start checking under seats in places now? Like, I'm gonna walk in and just hm. A whole bunch of people ripped the tags off from the actual chair, like the fire hazard warning. People thought they had something under their chair. It was hilarious. And then so he shows that off, they showed Disney Infinity 3.0. They gave everybody in the room a Mickey Disney Infinity figure which is really cute, and then they talked about the Star Wars Battle Pod, the new arcade experience. They're gonna make some that you can buy to put in your house. So, just a lot of stuff. It was- Just a lot of stuff. So these- So, I guess your best bet would be to Watch that part you just watched of this episode- [LAUGH] Yeah. And then remember what you wanted and then just Google search that. Go find. I mean there are panels for just about everything. The Pixar panel is really cool. And then on top of that like D23, it, it, for a feeling of like, scope, D23 used to be every other year. Yeah>> It used to be every other year, it wasn't a whole lot, it was more for really big Disney super fans to go. Big Disney dorks. Artist signings. Yeah, giant Disney dorks. Artist signings, things like that, and now it has become such a machine with the addition of Marvel and Star Wars, that. Big advertizing machine. That they're doing it Every year now. They're going to do it every year. So every year there'll be a D23 expo, it'll be around August. I mean, I don't see why not. Its such a huge thing now, and there were costumes, and they had BB8 and Stars Rebels, and they had a whole John Lassiter Hawaiian shirt exhibit. Like you could see all the Hawaiian shirts that were custom made for all the Pixar movies and they were incredible Specifically made for that movie and they had all the characters on there. So, so fun. It was really great, like I really, really enjoyed it How much was it? I don't remember how much tickets are because I had a press badge. But they're not terribly expensive. They're like Comic Con, like any Comic Con; probably 60, 70 bucks to go from one day. Okay. So and then I'm sure the three day pass is discounted, so okay, we've got to talk about hashtag [UNKNOWN] It's TD23. #TD23 And I want to know- Now, I want to know Know cuz it's my article. It's your article. Okay. Fine, fine. Take it away. [CROSSTALK] How this show does work. Take it away [CROSSTALK] I wanna know, how you doing, girl. [LAUGH] No, I wanna know what's the craziest announcement Disney should have made at their expo? The craziest? Mm-hm. I think I would've liked to have the craziest thing that is never gonna happen. I'm gonna go with crossover Star Wars and Marvel movie. Oh, the Patton Oswald thing, yeah. Like, we're gonna make a crossover, yeah. Crazy crossover where everything just starts bleeding together. I've had this whole idea that they should create a villain section of the park, and have more adult rollercoaster type stuff. Yeah. And have the villains rolling around and maybe they have evil drinks and they have alcohol. I don't know, I just added that part That's perfect for California Adventure. Villain's Land! But anyway, enough dorking around about Disney and stuff like that Alright, alright, so we'll very briefly touch on two other things. I want to talk about surgery, robotic surgery to be specific. There's a company called Visual Incision Corporation; they are seeking funding on Studying how feasible using this surgical robot would be for hospitals. So, here it is. It's not all that big. You'll see it holding a quarter here. So it's very precise and a surgeon can control it. It's got a light on it and everything. And what it does is, so up until that blue sort of line, they can actually insert that into a person via one single incision and then it can go in and do things like laparoscopic surgery. Which is a really big deal, one, for again, a healing time which we talk a lot about with like robot surgery and things like that. Like if you, the smaller and less amount of incisions you can make, the easier it is for somebody to heal from something. As important and as kinda really tough on the body as abdominal cavity surgery like any kind. So they wanna check out how this robot will work in a hospital, if it would save them money. And one of the big reasons why that they think it would save money is it's very lightweight, it's very portable, it doesn't require being hooked up to a big machine. Meaning the surgeons can take it from one OR to the next. They can just pick it up and carry it. Nice. So it's really lightweight, it's super easy, it's portable, you can take it from one OR to the next without needing either some big machine to help control it. Very simple to use. I may think that would actually lower the cost of robotic surgery, which right now is pretty expensive cuz you need a lot of equipment to go with the actual robotic arm. So they think this might help kind of lessen the cost, make it a little bit easier for hospitals to sort of either get access to that kind of technology and start using it, or and then maybe pass that on to Peak patients which would be pretty great. It's adorable. It's super great. Then the last thing I wanted to tell you guys about. This ridiculous auto-stroller. This made me laugh. This video is hilarious. I highly recommend you go watch it with the sound on because it's pretty funny. It's in German because it's from Volkswagen But they talk about this one worker at Volkswagen who says, on Facebook, why don't we have strollers that brake automatically? Like why don't we have that? And so they made this great video and it's a concept, it's a futuristic stroller that they claim has a, here watch. Oh, it stopped before his ball. So, they claim it has built in sensors for auto following people and also keeps a distance between you and the baby. And although it avoids collisions by slowing it down. It has brakes like Proximity sensors that will say oh, I'm close to something, I better slow down and stop. That sounds crazy. It was a [UNKNOWN] The video is hilarious. It's like him walking. People are like staring and like no, no, no, look your stroller is moving and they can't figure it out and it's hilarious. So they're saying it has the same sensors as their golf Card of, like the same types of cruise control. Adaptive cruise control sensors. But I love this one where the guy's playing soccer, kicking around and the stroller's just following him. Now, I've gotta put a little copy out on this, because obviously this video came from Volkswagen, and we have seen some pretty fun and impressive, but also very gimmicky Publicity stems from people like Lexus, who do the hover board. So I have to take this with a grain of salt unless we actually hear that there's enough demand that they're putting it into production. I also really love the The idea that that is a real thing and people would go crazy for that. People go nuts for it. Look at that. Swinging back and forth. [LAUGHTER] It's hilarious, like I absolutely love this video. It's a crack up, the video just made me laugh so much. I like it, very cool. So yeah, it was really fun. Either way, whether it's a publicity stunt or not, regardless, nice work VW on making something that was entertaining. And also just future minded if it doesn't ever go into production, which Honestly, I actually hope it does. Because I think a lot of parents would love that. Absolutely. I'd have to be some sort of app feature built into Of course, yeah you have your little app going, it's be great. Send your baby home, beep. Get out of here. Kicks off. Said your baby, I love that. Let's talk about though, right now some [INAUDIBLE] stuff, this is Back It or Hack It. We just got speaker, Georgie, in the studio so that was really intense for us. That's what people hear when we say back it or hack it? I'm horrified, guys. You probably think you're getting sliced up, I'm sorry. All right, we talked about SpaceVR. You remember Space VR. They wanted to make these experiences for cardboard and Oculus Rift and they were like, oh we wanna show people what it's like on an asteroid or like here and there in space and stuff. Yeah. Well they're back now. So now instead of wanting to make these experiences they actually want to Send a VR camera up to the International Space Station. They wanna send a camera, have an astronaut put it together. The astronaut would actually have to 3D print the case for the camera. [LAUGH] Nice. Which is pretty awesome, and then assemble it, and then they would put it inside This kit, by the way, is called the Overview One. They're calling it the Overview One, and it's this little cube camera and they see some VR stuff. This is their Kickstarter video. And they basically are saying that their Kickstarter. This is what they're hoping you'll see, like you'll be able to see this view of Earth and all this great stuff. And they want to fix a camera in the Cupola module, which has a very, very nice view of Earth and also the space station itself. So you'd be able to get a really good idea of what it's like to be up in space, which is pretty awesome. So this isn't like a live streams type thing. You're not like, oh, this is what's happening in space now. Not right that second, but what they want to do is they want to get that footage, have it Sent back and then they would take that footage, stitch it together, and create a VR experience that would be updated constantly. That's cool. So you could do like once a month, I think they were hoping to have, so you could have one month of access, to three months of access, things like that. So that's what they want to do, that's the module right there, that's the one they want to put the camera in. With that big thing? With the little windows, those panorama windows there. So that's it, that's where they want to put it. How big is that? The module? That little camera. That little camera? It's not terribly big. It's probably, probably about like six to eight inches. Like a good sized cube, but not huge, not huge. So they. It seems like a very hefty task. Seems expensive, right? It seems a little bit pricey. Well,they're asking for half a million dollars. Because obviously it is very expensive to send anything up to the ISS, people, gear, equipment. And you also have the terrible, and unfortunate, fear of the rocket exploding like Space Axis did. So, with your stuff on board. [INAUDIBLE] But they said this 500,000 would cover Sending it up there and their operating costs for one year. And after that obviously they would like charge for access to the camera. So, so here's how they want to do it. The astronaut on board would 3D print the case, put it together, put the cam in the cup module, [UNKNOWN] stitches together and releases it on most VR devices. So the Vive, the Risk Cardboard all the stuff. They, like I said, want $500,000. They have 22 days left in the campaign. They only have raised about $38,000. Yup. So it's not taking off like crazy. Ha, ha. That's their little hashtag there, be an astronaut. And if, okay, so if you want to back it, you can start at the low level, which is like five bucks, ten bucks, whatever, and you get their gratitude and maybe a t-shirt or whatever. [LAUGH] Their gratitude. But if you want access to the VR content, it starts at $75 to back, with three months of access, the first three months of access of footage, once the camera's up there and transmitting. So you get three months of access, and that's it. Then you got to pay after that. So basically, let's say $25 a month for access. No. You're not into it? No. If you pay 100- You lost me a long time ago. A long time ago. And it's becoming less and less enticing. But it's expensive. It's like a rich person like, I can see space [INAUDIBLE] No. I can't I'm not that invested. It seems educational but the thing is, it's also, again- I think people can create fake versions of it and like in the computer. That are just as realistic. That are just as realistic and you can actually travel through space. That's fair, I'll give you that, I think that that's a really good point, you could make a simulation that would be very interesting. Interesting and educational just the same. Okay, now what do you think, you hack it. Now, here's my thing. It's hard for you cuz you have to pick these bag it or hack its out and then you have to still. So I like them. Okay. So whatever I pick I obviously interested in or find entertaining enough to talk about. I think it's a good idea. I just think that if they're operating costs are half a million dollars for the first year, and to get that camera up there being so expensive, I know that they want to be on the forefront of it, which makes it a lot more expensive to do. So I appreciate that it's more expensive because they want to be the first But then I also am like I would rather wait until it was less expensive to send something up there. You know what I mean? Yeah. Like to me, it's sort of that back and forth of like I appreciate what they're trying to do but I don't know that I would want it back at this point. Because one, I don't even know that that camera is gonna make it up there. Might not. Who, even if it does make it up there, let's say the astronaut puts it together wrong or it is sitting in the [UNKNOWN] module and the footage is not that great. Like, what do you do then? You feel like you didn't get your money's worth when you could have a simulation that is beautiful and perfect and has no issues or problems without having to have all these risks involved? Like I say, I say no. I say wait. Say wait for it to be cheaper to send a camera up into space. I just thought it would be interesting to discuss. Yeah. Because I do get that it's ambitious. It's very ambitious, and I do appreciate what they want to do, I just, man that's a lot of risk involved there, so if you're feeling risky, and you have some money laying around, feel free to back it. But yeah, so for us, maybe not. All right, guys, we gotta talk about your robot friends. And by that, not us. I don't mean us. I mean your actual robopals that you wrote about in user feedback. [MUSIC] As I mentioned, we asked you guys last Wednesday, or Thursday. I don't remember. I never remember anything. I had a long weekend you guys, so many things happened. We asked you guys to use the hashtag T D Robo Pal, we were talking about the now robot who plays the Nintendo Wii U, Wii Tennis and it was adorable. And I looked up how much a Now Robot was I forgot how expense they were Cause I was like I want to get a now robot! What are they, like, a thousand dollars? I looked it up and it says nine grand. I'm like I'm never gonna buy a now robot. Well, that's why it can play Wii, cause it's like a $9,000 robot. So, you guys wrote in and beautifully responded in so many ways to what you would do with a robot sidekick. Dave wrote in and said hi kids. Here's my contribution to the CD robo pal discussion. Justin wrote in and said a robot who will scratch my back because I'm having a hard time reaching those itchy points and I can't ask my friend to do it. Alright! That's smart, that's really smart! Matthew wrote in saying my robo sidekick will make me a robot suit like Tony Stark's which will prep me for explorations in our universe. So a space-uh space resistant suit he could live up in space that'll be good. And then lastly Dustin wrote in saying I would want a RoboPal to play games with help me track my progress and offer tips on how I can improve my. So, he wants Robo pal to play games with, and also be like a life coach. That's the most noble one of all of them. It's a good one. Yea, you just want to be a better person, Dustin, no one's faulting you. I'm sure the robot comic robot would destroy that guy. [INAUDIBLE] Though, so they were in a battle. No, mm-mm, not great. So apparently it's like a really big, sort of mammoth for us, but it's a very quaint, little town and people like to go there and ski and do like hot cocoa in a ski lodge and all that stuff Horse drawn carriage ride and stuff like that. Apparently, people really like it I've never been but I've heard of it. I have heard of Whistler. I know where it is but I know but I've never been. So there you go.
