[SOUND] The Ford [UNKNOWN]
RS has been lauded as the best thing since sliced hot hatches.
It offers you all of the practicality that you get from a family car, but also performance that can humble pretty much anything on the road.
In fact, it's really easy to use.
That's what impresses about it, especially the drift button Now I've had a go, and I reckon it can make pretty much anybody look like a hero.
So today I'm going to prove that.
Because I'm going to get my mum to go sideways.
So Internet, meet my mother Hilary.
This is Hilary Goy.
Shes is 60 years old and is a retired school teacher.
She's not a confident driver and hasn't been for many years.
So she's ideal for my little experiment.
Right.
This is your car.
Well, for today.
And you've never been sideways before.
Never, ever.
So I'm just going to show you a little bit of what this can do.
A bit of noise.
Woo.
[SOUND].
[SOUND] Welcome to Castle Coon.
Is it lovely.
Are you lying when you say that?
No, I'm not lying when I say that.
I like the noise.
It's like the television on a Saturday afternoon if I accidentally go onto the sports.
The track's nice and wet, so.
Might be a little bit slippery but that's kind of what today's exercise is all about.
Which I'm amazed about is you're not remotely nervous or scared, or at least not appearing that way.
No, I'm perfectly all right.
I trust you to the end.
Like that?
[SOUND] [LAUGH] You're going to be doing that, but you know.
Slower.
So now what the car does is it puts loads of power to its rear,
Yes.
Gets one wheel spinning really fast.
Yes.
To put you out of shape.
Yes.
and then you can just hold it for as long as you like.
All right.
So you go and then [NOISE]
[BLANK_AUDIO]
You're going to be doing this.
Yes, I know.
Has the reality of the situation now set in?
Yes it has set in, yes.
My stomach is halfway out.
[MUSIC]
There's a look of abject terror on your face.
[LAUGH]
[MUSIC]
You agreed to do this.
Yes, I'm fit.
There's one question I do want to ask you.
Yeah.
Why is do they want to put something like that on a car?
Because people like me do stuff like this.
[MUSIC]
Because I'm a horrible teacher, and, like most, have no patience We brought in Andy Benson from Ford's press department to teach her how to get the car all out in shape.
He knows how the drift mode works way better than I.
When you go for your left turn-
Yeah.
Instead of trying to do it like that, if you can really do it sharply.
Yeah I can.
Sharp.
Yes.
Sharp and floor it at the same time.
Right.
Okay.
That will give you a bit more assistance on the-
Give the talk, around it goes.
Yeah.
God help me, I'm not gonna survive
All right.
it was a slow beginning.
really slow.
Mom, bless her, took to driving around a corner really, really slowly.
[MUSIC]
Straight, straight, straight, straight, straight, two seconds.
Straight.
Power, power, power.
Power, power, power.
Clutch up.
Right.
Now hit straight, just straight straight straight straight straight straight straight.
Bury it now, bury it.
[SOUND] You need to bury that throttle absolutely to the bottom.
As I turn.
Yeah and it needs to right to the floor.
Floor it, yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
However, at this time when some of Andy's teachings began to stick.
She started going faster and faster and faster until eventually, Straight, keep going straight, keep going straight, straight, straight, straight, straight.
Now turn, now go over there, go over there, go over there.
All right, now full power go on.
Full power, go on.
My god.
Yeah.
You're fine, you're fine, you're fine.
[INAUDIBLE]
We did it.
We did it.
Not happy thought.
[LAUGH]
No, I'm all right.
Now we've stopped.
I'm ecstatic.
[NOISE]
Then another little skid.
[BLANK_AUDIO]
Whoa.
I said keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going.
Brilliant.
Well done.
Well done.
Well done.
So being the good child I am, I thought I'd hop and see the magic myself.
Now whip, whip, whip.
Keep going.
Yes!
[LAUGH]
That's all right, that's all right.
That's all right.
We're good, we're good.
[UNKNOWN] I know, I have got my foot on the brake.
I'm happy now.
He is going to be bloody ecstatic.
That was the best thing ever!
He is gonna be excited.
That is what he's been waiting for, isn't he?
That was the first thing you've ever done, ever.
At this juncture, I think we've punished my mom enough.
So I took her for a quick spin myself and then she said this.
Not right now please God no, make
[FOREIGN]
So maybe he was trying to let her have a rest.
However, I set out to prove that the new Focus RS is so easy to A drift that literally anyone can do it.
And no matter how small the skids were, my point has been made.
Anyone can drift a Focus RS, even your mom.
