The exterior design language of the Cadillac CTS is sharp, and swept back headlights flow over the front fenders while a more aggressive front fascia and grille with an updated company crest let people know that Cadillac means business.
There are four different engine choices for the CTS in 2018. A 2.0L turbocharged four promises up to 30 mpg on the highway while still making a very impressive 268 hp. The mid-level engine, a 3.6L V6, produces 335 hp, while a turbocharged version of that V6 makes 420 horses for the V-Sport models. Multiple engines and several different trim levels combine to give buyers plenty of options when it comes to configuring the CTS.
Standard equipment on the CTS includes an 11-speaker sound system with satellite radio, a CUE infotainment system with an 8-inch screen, 4G LTE connectivity, in-car WiFi capability and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay phone integration systems. Bluetooth, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless access and ignition, 8-way power adjustable front seats, one year of OnStar, a rear parking sensors and camera and 17-inch wheels are also all standard.
More expensive trim levels add features such as 18-inch wheels, leather seating surfaces, HID headlights, a navigation system, a Bose 13-speaker sound system, heated and cooled seats and a heated steering wheel, 20-way adjustable high-performance front seats, a heads-up display and a lane departure warning system.
The CTS-V offers as much performance as has ever been offered in a Cadillac sedan. Besides the incredible engine and 8-speed transmission, the V also includes an electronic differential, Magnetic Ride Control, Brembo performance brakes and 19" painted aluminum wheels.
Safety in the CTS is handled by several airbags as well as anti-lock brakes, traction control and stability control. Optional safety equipment includes a rear-view camera, a blind spot warning system and forward collision preparation and automatic braking.
When I picked up the 2017 Cadillac CTS-V from the Roadshow garage, California was in the midst of a torrential downpour. No matter how many times I checked the weather, the result was the same: rain. Rain for days.
Keeping my foot off the accelerator of this supercharged beast was a study in restraint. I wanted so badly to rev the engine up to 7 grand, but with Michelin Pilot Super Sport summer tires and slippery, wet roads I had to put safety first. This car deserves respect.
The CTS-V shares its 6.2-liter V8 engine with the Corvette Z06, although it's tuned down slightly to 640 horsepower and 630 pound-feet of torque. Smaller numbers, sure but it's hardly a detriment. The engine delivers power smoothly to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the four driving modes and five levels of traction control make this Caddy one unbeatable super sedan.
The Good Cadillac's Magnetic Ride Control keeps the car settled in the turns and the electronic limited-slip differential makes cornering fast and fun.
The Bad Three words: Cue infotainment system.
