Tomorrow Daily 127: An FDA-approved exoskeleton, Spider-Man comes back to Marvel and more

Culture
On today's show, the FDA approves an exoskeleton for use by paralyzed patients so they can walk again. Which is awesome. Spiderman is back with Marvel! Finally! Kind of. I've got more details. But it's very exciting. And a new hotel will be employing robots, almost exclusively, and you're never going to guess where the hotel is. Japan. Why do you ruin all my good surprises? Tomorrow Daily. [MUSIC] Greetings citizens of the Internet. Welcome to Tomorrow Daily, the best [UNKNOWN] talk-show in the known universe. I'm your host Ashley Esqueda. Joining me as always. Spider-Man himself, Khail Anonymous. You don't know that. You're not supposed to reveal your secret identity. That's, that is very true. And I'm Batman. I think the Internet collectively exploded yesterday when that news broke, so. Well, it's between that and the Fall Out kind of news. Oh [LAUGH]. Which, thanks for not putting that on here, that's kind of screwed up. Long story short, Bethesda announced an official Fall Out, no [CROSSTALK] Press conference. For E3, which they've never done before. Yeah. They've never had their own event, which is leading a lot of people including Mr. Anonymous over here, Mm-hmm. To, to believe that Fall Out 4 is going to be announced [CROSSTALK] Yeah, because like, I know there's some people that were like, Dishonor 2, yes! But it's like, come on. What, what are you doing? Come on. What are you doing with your life? Let's get excited about Fall Out [INAUDIBLE] Fall Out 4, yeah. So Anyway, we got a lot of good stuff today. Anyway, yeah we've got some great stuff. Let's hit the headlines. [MUSIC] Dishonored, shut up. I'm sorry. [LAUGH] You, a good one to go toe to toe against Fall Out. I get aggravated. To Khail, if you were cheering for Dishonored 2, Khail's gonna get a news paper, roll it up, and just bop you in the nose. I love the game but let's move on. All right, let's talk about ReWalk. I don't know if you guys have heard of ReWalk, but it is an exoskeleton and it is being used to help paralyzed people walk again, which is pretty cool, but the, the big news is that it's now FDA approved. Oh. So this is now a thing that is FDA approved. People can, you can prescribe it. You can, you know, hopefully go through your insurance. And it'll, cover some of it. It's pretty pricey, I'll get to that in a minute. But, here it is. If you're just listening, it is an exoskeleton that goes around the outside of the legs. And you have these carbon fiber foot plates that you put your shoes into and then you're actually able to walk. It's, it will move the hips and the knees. And it's sort of like having a pair of robot legs and then some crutches to help you sort of balance yourself. Oh, that's great. Its got a eight-hour battery life. So it'll last you most of the day, but then there's also back-up batteries you swap it out if it dies, just like your favorite Android phone mmhm it's kind of amazing, so it's got, this is the thing I really like. Not only can it walk and turn, you could also. You can also climb stairs in it. Which is pretty amazing, in and of itself. And then also it works with motion sensors, so when you're in it, and you lean forward it knows you want to start walking. So it starts walking. but. Incredible. But if it doesn't. If, If like for some reason you are leaning forward and it's not recognizing that, there's actually a wearable, like a smart watch that you can tell it, hey I want climb stairs. Or hey, I want to walk right now. Hey, I want to do this. so, like super impressive. That's crazy amazing. Now, I don't, I don't know anything about like medical insurance or anything, but does the FDA approval mean now that they, you can get it through It's possible Health insurance? You can get it. Like, maybe some, some you know, up to a certain amount covered by your insurance. Yeah. Because it's FDA approved I'll take it. It's not something that's. It's like what is it, like a trial, like trial therapies that are not covered by insurance, or possible that some people might be able to get some, at least some relief on the price tag, which is pretty steep. It's $70,000. But, can you put a price tag on walking again? I guess not. [INAUDIBLE] I guess not. I mean, it's like one of those things where it's like it seems really expensive. Hopefully it'll come way down in price as we get better at making these things. Yes. Yeah But I mean, for somebody to be able to get up and walk again, I know they interviewed the article I had read, they interviewed a woman who's been paralyzed from the waist down for I think 12 years, and she said "This is amazing, I get to," you know, she's just right up and walking and she's like "I just. I never thought I'd feel like this again. ANd it was just so cool. Like I just, I thought that was the greatest thing and I just loved... And that technology is just get better and better and better and better. Yeah, and cheaper! And cheaper and cheaper so that everybody that has had, you know, these types of accidents, like, whether it's, you know, Les, the guy who got two... two robot arms to control with his mind, or people that are paralyzed use these exoskeletons. So cool. Very cool, nice I love it I know So it's a great story. Alright, tell me, I know we're dying to just get right into this. Okay, this was the big, the big internet thing, this week as far as nerds are concerned because. Sony has struck a deal with Marvel to have them co-produce the next Spider-Man movie and the Spider-Man universe for kind of the foreseeable future. Yeah. So Spider-Man is back with Marvel! Whoo! Kind of, all right. Kind of. We already knew that Spider-Man was gonna make an appearance in the next Avengers movie. Or Avengers. Infinity War, but now Marvel ha-, has has signed has allowed Yeah. Kevin Fe-, Feige, Kevin Feige to work with Sony to kind of hold their hand and help them. Walk them through the process. [LAUGH] Re-, rejuvenate the Spider-Man franchise with the whole Marvel mentality. So Yeah, cuz let's all be real here. The last cou-, the last few Spider-Mans were. Okay. Yeah so they're going with a new direction that's going to kind of seep in with the Marvel universe. Yeah. Which is a good thing. But what does this mean Kale? That is old man in a shack on top of mount balding. See you said kind of, like so they, they kind of have. Because they didn't it's not like they. I'll get to that. I'll get to that, I'll get to it. I know that's the breakdown part. Well what does this mean Kale? Well that means. Andrew Garfield is out -he's out- he's not going to be Spider-Man anymore, which means, more or less, we're going to see a whole new -new Spider-Man-start to it. Yeah, it's going to be maybe a reboot again -a fifth a new origin story- yeah it may be a reboot but it's totally in [INAUDIBLE] universe. Also, no Sinister 6 movie, like Sony had all these plans to make a Sinister 6 movie, an all woman's Spider-Man like all these plans. they were just like, we're not gonna do any of these we're just gonna see what Kevin Feige comes up with. And we're gonna work together and that's so good. They shelved it. yes. Wow, I didn't know that. I haven't heard that. Okay, so here's kind of, here's kind of, should we be excited? Okay yeah, let's, I'm tempering my expectations here. Here's, here's the should we be excited. So the rights still belong to Sony. Okay. So, it's not Marvel's property. They're still gonna belong to Sony. Sony's gonna put in, put in the money. They're gonna do the distribution. And unfortunately they're gonna get final creative control, which So it's not like Marvel is gonna be like, all right here it is, yeah but Sony could just be like well we want him to be like fluffy or whatever, I don't know yeah, yeahs but with Marvel now being engaged with that there is the possibility that Marvel characters will. Will spill over into the Spider-Man universe, so maybe Wolverine comes and like cuts his web -that's Fox, that's Fox, how are they going to make that deal work? -You know what I mean,-let's make all the deals work- so, yeah, Iron Man or whatever -Iron Man- so yeah there you go. They're going to be co-producing it Kevin Feige and also Amy Pascal, who stepped down as the Sony CEO, but started her own production company that is still funded and run under the Sony Umbrella -yeah- so it's sort of like a. Kansas city shuffle like she's still kind of with Sonny but not technically with. I, it's kind of a [UNKNOWN] so. She's got a bit of a tude if you remember the emails. So I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna hold reserve and just see what happens. We'll see, we'll see. There's a, there is a quote from the CEO of Sony which I wanted to read. Oh, okay, hit me with that. This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans. And we're like" Duh."" Duh." Like I think people have been saying it for like 15 years. So, there you go, the next Spiderman movie is set to come out in the summer of 2017 so that's presumably when we'll see him, but, also he'll be Yeah. Well and they moved back everything. What? They moved back a bunch of the Marvel movies. So they, they took that slate I was reading about this today. They took that, I think July 28th 2017 or whatever and they moved back like Black Panther, I think Thor. They moved Marvel Properties? Yeah Yeah because it's part of like, they're part of their thing and Inhumans got moved back to like 2019 now. It 's like it's shifted, anything beyond that got shifted. Shifted forward. So it's like Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Inhumans, like, there's a few Marvel movies that got pushed back because of them saying, oh well, we've got Spider-Man now so here's where he's gonna be. And like, right in the middle of everything, right in the mix. Mm-hmm. not, not before Avengers 3, but definitely after Civil War, Captain America: Civil War, which means we may see. Civil war, like, that could be a thing. You just said, you're just saying a lot of things, I don't know what. ... Lot of nerds say. But yeah, so it's, we'll see Spiderman, Marvel, and who knows what the future holds for Spiderman? Yeah. We don't know if it'll be a reboot. It absolutely will be...It absolutely will be. It will be. I heard... I heard a rumor today, couple of inside sources... huh, say that... ... telling me that, studio's looking for someone around the age of 19. I'm in. We play a spider man so someone young. They're looking for a young guy. That would be awesome. So which will play really great I think against the older avengers. i mean your looking at older people who are quite a bit older. And not only that we've only had like olderish spiderman, like Andrew Garfield Yeah! looked pretty, he didn't look like he belonged in highschool It was like Beverly Hills 90120 where they're like and neither did Toby Maguire. Thirty years old but playing high schoolers. It was like eh. Anyway, so there you go so there's your exciting Nerd News and I said Nudes. So there you go. Very exciting. And that's our hashtag of the day as well speaking of which is TV's spidey. And we want to know who you think should put on the tights next. Who should be the next spider man. Get creative with it, dont, don't go mainstream. Find somebody. Really, like, you know who I think? My little brother, I don't know. [LAUGH] Your little brother? I think, I don't have a little brother. I think like Miles Teller from Whip Lash. That's what I was gonna, that's actually what I was gonna say. Is that really what you were gonna say? Miles Teller. Miles Teller. I feel like him, or Ben Barnes maybe? Yeah. Like, that would be a good choice? I, like I, there's a couple of younger actors. Well, Miles Teller's got enough of that like, Miles Teller, oh. ****. Yeah. But like awkward, and I agree. Yeah, just and and he is kinda like not beautiful, but Right, but he's, he's got that sort of face, like he's got that endearing sort of face and personality like. I feel like I could really like him as Peter Parker. Mm-hmm. I feel I could really like him. That's what I'm saying. So we say Miles Teller. Sony call him. Yeah, I can't believe we both agreed on Miles Teller. I totally love that. We didn't, we did not plan that. It's perfectly sa, he's a perfectly sassy young man. Yes. [LAUGH] Perfectly sassy young man, write that down Sony and give him, give his agents a call. Kale can I tell you about the robot hotel? Yeah, I was waiting for that. Okay, so the Henn-Na Hotel is. Okay where do I even begin with this? [INAUDIBLE] theme park has a hotel opening this summer. And that theme park is Netherland themed but it's in Japan. So it's in Nagasaki prefecture and it's like Netherland themed so you can get a taste of the Netherlands from Japan. Okay. Anyway they're opening this hotel called the [UNKNOWN] hotel on the property. And it's gonna have robot staff members. So here's some of the rooms. Like, we're seeing some of the pictures here from inside the hotel. Mm-hmm. But the cool thing is, is that you're gonna have there, there they are, you're gonna have some robots, some actoids right, right up front at the reception desk and they're gonna be able to help you out. And this is, we have some footage of these actual robots that are actoids, these are the ones, and funny, these robots are made by the same sort of. Umbrella company that also handles San Rio. So this is a company that's like responsible for Hello Kitty. But so this is unreal. Like looking at this [UNKNOWN] That's her. She is slightly terrifying. But they're gonna have these at the front desk like checking you into the hotel and then there's gonna be robots to take your luggage up to the room. Like it's gonna deliver your luggage. Like bag porters. And then there's also going to be room, room cleaning. You're going to have a room cleaning robot. Come in clean your room a little bit and then leave. And then oh, the locks on the doors are going to be completely there's not going to be keys. It's all face recognition so you just walk up to the door and it recognizes your face and then you go into your room. This android is the most similar in movement and looks to a human in the world. When we are creating the young female robot. Kahlil, you gonna stay there? I want to. I'd try it out. But like if, if in the middle of the night it all of a sudden SkyNet takes over we're kind up the creek but. You are hosed. Oh boy. I don't know. I, what, what's the, what's the goal? They just don't like people. Like you don't like people. What's the deal? Well so, the one thing is is that obviously people in Japan are a little bit more welcoming of robots. Says like service. Right. And. And I hate humans? I No. This is a really interesting sort of little factoid. So, in Japan right now they're having kind of a, a crisis of population. So this huge section of the population is getting elderly, so they're retiring, they're passing away, like they're just getting older and they're not working. They're leaving the work force. But there's not enough people being born in Japan to fill that, those gaps of the people who are working. So they're basically like robotics is this, there's this big push by Ave who is like their big, he's running the country. He's saying like we need to have this robotics revolution where we're filling these holes where we need workers and we just dont have them. Like, so that's a, that's an actual thing that's happening in Japan right now, is that their, their, their population is not keeping up with the amount of people they need to like have basic services. I don't think that really changes my question. I, I, think when people, It's not that they hate people, No, no, no, I, I think when people go to a hotel it, it's the luxury of having people like, wait on you and, and like genuinely. Want to make your experience good. But with a robot, it's cold. It's, it's all formulaic in their program to do it, and it's not really genuine, persay. Yeah. That's true. I mean, you don, you definitely don't get the human touch, like when you're, you know, talking to a front desk agent or anything. Yeah. It just doesn't feel like someone's taking care of you. It just feels like. This, this robotic entity taking care of you, it just doesn't seem. I think there's still going to be people in the hotel. Like they said they want to have it's only, they're only gonna have 10 robots on the staff when they launch. But they want to hit like 90 percent robot staff by like a certain period of time? Like in the future, but I would imagine like foster, all that other stuff that you can't have a robot do like give you a massage or whatever. It's only a matter of time! But yeah, I, I have a feeling that it's a little bit of both so they're going to try to keep those personal touches where they feel their necessary but not necessarily. At like a front desk so I like how the only human employee would be like a grumpy old repair man. Damn robots gotta fix the robots. Feeding people to much food. I don't know. Do you want to know how much it cost to stay there a night. Do you want to guess? So it's in Yen. Yeah let's say in yen. It opens in summer, there's 72 rooms. Do you have it in normal? I do. Okay I'll let ,. Four hundred a night. Really high. I'm high? You, yeah. Okay, so what is it. It's just under 60 dollars a night. What? Yeah. They keep costs down. They don't have to pay the people. Yeah, but they have to build robots Yeah, they're just old robots. And make them look like human. And they repair robots. They don't have to pay them, like. They don't pay them in oil and electricity. Yeah, you gotta pay them in oil. Give them a little like, give them little computer chips as like snacks. $50 and where is this again? Because I want to do it. Nagasaki prefecture and it's at the, it's called the Hen Zen. Henn Na Hotel. I want to stay there and is it open now? July they're going to open in July. Alright guys we're going to go set up our reservations for the Henn Na Hotel obviously because that is going to be delightful. And we'll be right back after this break, with, with a bunch of cool stuff. We got new releases it's Tuesday. There's a ton of stuff coming out this week. Really good stuff. And of course your user feedback and our [INAUDIBLE] for the day. So don't click away, Tomorrow Daily. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] Welcome back to the show. Khail is just finishing up his staring contest with the camera. He won. Truly. You won. You're good. You can blink again. Okay. Okay, good. [CROSSTALK] I'm not getting the new 3DS. I decided against it. I decided against it. You buy everything Nintendo. I do. Well,. I have a 3DS XL and it doesn't feel like enough of an upgrade. I love that C-stick, though, the little extra? Yeah. So cool. so, new 3DS coming out, new Nintendo 3DS, there's the C-stick right there that we're seeing, and, no, just super exciting, really good 3D now. It's so much better than... I don't use 3D at all on my XL. But when I checked out the new 3DS over at PAX South, I was really impressed, you can totally move your head, it's got like the head tracking so it knows like where, what direction you're looking from. Is this just in time for Valentine's Day? Is it not? And it comes in red! Oh god. Just FYI everybody, or if you're in to friday the 13th it also comes in black, so there you go. How much is it? 199. Okay. I'm not getting it. No, I just, I, maybe later this year. I'm not a mobile gaming dude. Nah, maybe later this year. I... my 3DS is a Street Path machine. Majora's mask, too, right? Majora's mask, 3D. I mean it... it's a remake. It looks... amazing. It does look crazy good. It looks so good and I'm just excited to go back into that world. And replay it. And looks really great. I'm, I'm really happy about this. okay, next, Evolve, is out. Hmm. Evolve is out today! On Xbox 1 Oh, yeah. PS4, PC, this is the game where, if you're not familiar with it, you can play as four people, plus a fifth that plays as like, the monster. so it's like you play. It has four different classes, and then the last person plays the bad guy. Very revered, game. Yes Everybody's super excited about this.>> Yes, people are jacked about this Its ,uh, it's, its, it's a real test to see if you have friends and if you like your friends. And if you like your friends. That's a very good point. You can play, you can play games with your friends If 'can play this game with your friends, and still be friends when its over. MMHMM>> Their friends for life. I think. Yeah. I think you're probably in a good place with, you know, how cool your friends are. My friends were totally not awesome when I played with them, so gonna have to find some new friends. Yeah, you're just gonna have to give it up, find some new friends. Also Are you gonna be getting that? You know, I want to, but I wanna see some Let's Plays. Like, I wanna watch it on Twitch a little bit more. Like, I haven't seen a whole lot of it. I've been like, kinda of keeping tabs on it. Mm-hmm. And being like, that's, that looks really cool. So probably, you know, when you buy it, I'll watch you on your Twitch channel play it and then I'll be like, okay, Khail seems to be having fun. I'll buy it. Yeah. All right. That's probably what's gonna happen. There we go. And then movies, well, movie-wise, Kingsman: The Secret Service is coming out this week, which I gotta say, like Wait a minute. I thought this movie was already out? No. I'm so excited Are you serious? About this movie. It comes out this weekend. I wanna see it so bad. Colin Furth's, like, secret agents, and this is like [INAUDIBLE] It's got, like, an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. It looks really fun. It's like, all the best parts about, like, retro spy movies, British spy movies. Like, I dig this. This feels like old, older James Bond, and I, I totally love that. And this is based on a graphic novel. I think so. Yeah. Yeah, so. So, but it looks so fun. Is it, is it Mark Miller? I don't know. [CROSSTALK] I think it's Mark Miller. Is it? yeah. I, I remember reading an article where they're saying this may open up the gateway to another one of Mark Miller's comics. And also this might open up a franchise. Like, they were saying this could be a franchise. Yup. So, I, I really dig this. I hope it does really well. I mean [INAUDIBLE] Oh my God. Like, every other movie, it has Michael Cain and Samuel Jackson. Michael Cain and, yeah. Of course. Well, you got to. Yup. You got to. That's how you do it. And then lastly, something you'll be very excited to hear, yesterday SlingTV has started up services. Woo. So you can now, in the U.S. only though. Sorry everybody else in the world. I, hopefully it will show up. But yeah. Sling TV 20 bucks. Get, get to see some pretty good channels. They're adding AMC apparently very soon. So you can get your Better Call Saul. No way. Walking Dead fix on Sling TV. And they have Adult Swim? Yeah, like ABC Family, Disney. They have okay it's 20 bucks and then you can also buy some extra stuff. Like they have one. Things that's like, kids channels, so that's an extra four or five like kid channels in the package Here we go So it's like, it's funny Here we go Models like cable but Trying to turn back into cable. I see>> But I really like that they are. Unbundling those things that it's like, I might not, somebody who doesn't have kids doesn't need that. That's just the start, Ashley. I know. Well, then they have the sports thing, of course. They have a sports package that has like, the sports stuff. But $20 a month is the basic and then you can use whatever. It's not like a bunch of set top boxes that you already have. If you're like, if you're like an ESPN fan and you're. A corn cutter like you have to do, you have to do this. This is it. Yeah this is a really good choice. So anyways sling TV comes out um,some really good stuff this week for new releases. I mean I'm excited about most of it. All of it actually like I, I'm on the fence about evolve but even them like I'm pretty excited about thinking so. She's so unappreciative. So unappreciative. Its true. Do you wanna talk about our, our users and their feedback? Yes. Because this is User Feedback. [MUSIC] Yesterday we asked you guys to use the hashtag, TD Drive, to tel us what. Sport you could go pro in like from a video game to a professional in real life. Right and I said Goat simulator. [INAUDIBLE] I said the cat game where you knock things over, it's really good. Oh yeah, okay yeah, No, Misha, No or some. I don't know [INAUDIBLE] Mickey wrote in and said Forza Motorsport, Call of Duty, Battlefield, GT6. This guy sounds like a scary human being to be around [LAUGH] Yeah, Battlefield. I want to drive up real fast, I gonna put you in. Oh maybe, maybe he's ex-military. There you go. Ex=military are really good at things like that so call Kitty. Jay wrote in and said Resident Evil and Need for Speed Most Wanted and FIFA Soccer. Like, I like all of those too. Okay, good. Good, yeah, we need those. You're gonna need all those. Resident Evil I know that there's, there's a big need. mh-hm -for fighting -you need to know how to use first aid spray that's true [NOISE] Then eat herbs eat herbs [LAUGH] Todd wrote in and said I'm pretty good at Flower [LAUGH] that made me laugh quite a bit. Mohamed Suleman said keeping the *tddrive theme and the ridiculous games I would love to go pro with Burnout crash mode! Just need some Wolverine healing skill. So he's good at not driving -crashing cars- while, good, good. Admitting it is the first step [CROSSTALK] yeah I think you can get someone to collect the insurance, you're on the right road Burnout just start flipping cars all over the place, demolition derby, he'd be really good at demolition derby, there you good, that's that's burnout crash mode That's a very lucrative career yeah, lucrative career mode. J. L. Fox wrote into us and said, I'd go pro at Tetris, with Anna Train as my second. So he tagged, tagged his, tagged his friend, Anna Train. But I like going pro at Tetris. Yeah. Just FYI, you pretty much do that every time you go on vacation and put a bunch of stuff in the trunk of your car, like you're on a road trip. Yeah. Or like, you'd be an architect. yeah, right, yeah, yeah But once you put enough bricks in the right place they all just disappear. yeah, they just go away. Like the whole bottom of the building you put like the last corner in and it's like, bloop, bloop, it's gone Oh, my beautiful building, Oh know the base going to be so [INAUDIBLE] mad you know. I didn't know al, I didn't know architects sounded like that. You're like, come on. Hey. Stefan wrote in and said, I would be great at Five Nights at Freddie's in real life. I would just shove a bookshelf in front of all the doors. There you go. There you go. See. He's already got a plan. Smart man. Smart man. You got a strategy. Yeah. He gets that $6 paycheck. Yeah. You know, he gets paid $6 to work at Friday Nights at Freddie's. You get one figure. In the one figures. Your, your salary's 5.95 You can't even take that job if you knew how to defend yourself. Like it's robots, scary robots going around everywhere. No, uh-uh. No,of course not. Like the thing is if you. Get a better job. Yeah, you'd quit immediately. I love Stephen, Stephen is always cool on this show but like. Yeah if you survive the first night, you're quitting. Right? The next day. You're not, you're not. Staying five nights. You're not staying no five nights. No. That's crazy, it's crazy. All right guys, it's time for our last season user feedback which is, of course, our phonetographer of the day. [MUSIC] You're going to really like this. This is from Tanay. He says, Ashley and Khail, I'm Tanay. I'm from Turkey but live in Toronto. My friend had a biolab and they were looking at plants through a dissecting microscope and I just had to take a picture of it. Ashley, the wait is over. It won't get any better than this. [LAUGH] Wish you guys a great day. Keep up the good work. I took these photos on an iPhone 5S. That Wow! Wait, so through the microscope there? Yeah. Very cool I love it! What are they again? plants. Oh, alright We're looking at plants through a microscope, and, man, I just, I love these, I mean, he sent, [UNKNOWN] sent four. But I was, I just thought these were the coolest ones of the four that I brought Cool. Yeah. Very cool. You brought them. Yes. You can get a different perspective with our, other cameras. Literally. Mm-hm. Literally a different perspective. You know, you're saying it doesn't get any better than that, but I. I feel like it could. I feel like, maybe, just maybe, it could. Just it's like, it's right there. It's so close. Mm-hm. But not quite. Mm-hm. But it's so good, so good. If you guys want to send in your phonetography and be considered for the show.
