Sony Vaio SE
I'm Dan Ackerman and we are here taking a look at the latest edition to the Sony Vaio laptop line.
This is the Sony Vaio SE.
Now, this reminds me a lot of the super upscale Sony Vaio Z Series although this is a 15-inch model.
That one was a 13-inch but it's got the same sort of black slab-like look.
It's got the same sort of non-traditional for Sony hinges on the big rounded hinge that usually had on Sony systems but this is also a much more powerful system.
Here, you can get a Core 15
processor in there or Core i7.
You can get a Blu-ray drive built-in.
You can get AMD graphics and in fact this got one of those kind of only on Sony Vaio features which is the switch right here.
That's a Stamina on one side and Speed on the other.
If you push it over to Stamina, that turns that AMD GPU off, so your battery runs longer.
If you turn it to Speed, that turns the GPU on and the battery may not lasts as longer which you not plug-in but you can use that graphics card to, you know, play video games or do other things you do with a graphics card.
They've got the same typically excellent Sony design.
We always like their keyboards and their touchpads.
This keyboard is actually backlit which we like a lot and because it's a 15.5-inch screen that can fit in the full number pad over there.
And if you're a business user, they're actually work on the TPM chip which is something if you're not in an IT department or looking for a laptop that your IT department would need to approve of.
You really don't need to worry about it but it's nice that it's in here.
Sony is also going only on the concept of slice batteries which are one of those on the Z and there's one available for this too.
It's a $150
add-on to the base $999 price of the laptop and with a slice battery is just this guy right here.
It's like an extended battery that just fits under the entire bottom surface of the laptop and you just snap it on there and then you can hypothetically run your laptop for a lot longer without really changing, you know, the look and feel and shape.
Without that, we run for about 3 hours.
With it, we run for about 6.5 hour on our test.
When you wrap in the really nice design, cool features like a 1080p screen and things like the TPM chip, which would end up with-- is a laptop that's upscale but not so upscale
that you can't afford it.
I'm Dan Ackerman and that's the new Sony Vaio SE.
