Things that are important, you know, what type of MP3 player to get for someone, what's important, or features that you guys care about. That's, she's the brain here so that's what we want you guys to talk about. And you can, this really interactive. I'm sorry, I'm, like, I don't even know. I can't even talk right now. So what we have here is you brought some, like, headphones here. >> I did. >> And is this kind of what you've been looking at lately or - >> Yeah, actually, there haven't been a lot of new MP3 players coming out in the last month or so I brought a bunch of headphones with me and I picked a theme because it just so happens that I had a bunch in this theme and what they are, are stylish headphones. >> Ooh, we like style. >> And these ones I just reviewed today. It's actually not even gone up yet and these are the V mode of Vibe II headphones and they have the built in mic so that you can use them with an iPhone or another music phone. They have a call answer button cause that always comes in handy. And they're really heavy, actually. Do you want to feel them? They're, like, very metal. >> They're very, yeah. >> Yeah. >> They're like, I remember I saw, at least, when you, I think you mentioned them, or someone mentioned them, on the CRAVE blog early, so I thought I saw them. The first thing I saw was on, like, these remind me of, like, the terminator. >> Yeah, yeah. They definitely look that, actually. They're pretty heavy. >> Their previous ones, the, I don't remember, the Vibe Duos, right? >> The Vibe Duos, yes. >> I mean, those were really stylish and sexy. >> Yeah. They didn't have, I think, I can't remember what kind of cable they had. These are the cloth cables. >> Uh-huh. >> Which a lot of people like cause it's more durable. >> Yeah. >> And the thing that the Vibe Duo was missing was the call answer button which kind of doesn't make sense if you're gonna do a headset, a stereo set for a phone because you want to have that [inaudible] so they have improved these. >> Uh-huh. >> And another thing that's improved about these is the plug housing. This modified L shaped plug housing that has, like, rubberized so it makes it more durable. So, these are great. I've actually really liked them. >> I'm sorry. How's the sound quality on them? >> Standard with the - >> It is good. >> [Inaudible] is pretty good. >> Very heavy on the bass. It's kind of good bass, good mids, the high end gets a little off. >> Yeah, yeah. >> So these are a hundred and twenty-eight. So, they're about like mid to high range, I mean, you can get way up there. >> It's a gun. >> Yeah, it does look like a little ray gun or something, actually. We are really liking these for durability. >> Okay, awesome, awesome. And then, some of the other two guys that you have here. >> These two are something called, well, they're from iFrogs and they're ear pollution and this one is Toxix and plug so they're two, kind of, different styles. This is the on ear style. >> Okay. >> Has the ear pad that rests just outside of your ear. And then, you have the earbud which goes into the ear and they have this, kind of, you know, radiations. That's what that symbol is there. >> That says Toxix but it's spelled, like, T, O, X, I, X. >> Right. And this one is Plugz with a Z on the end so they are red. I'm sure these come in a lot of different colors. I literally haven't even opened the box, as you can see, but they're just kind of, like, you know, cool design. >> And obviously, you know, spelling words the way they aren't meant to be spelled with Xs and Zs is really hip in school. >> They love to do that with headphones, I swear, like. >> There's some etching. Like some toy etching. Okay, so we have a few questions in here and keep them coming guys. This is great. This question is from CalSGRA and CalSGRA asks, Hi, Jasmine and Brian. What is the file format that uses iTunes? Is it AAC? If so, does the Sony and Creative ZEN X, it is Sony and the Creative X Fi compatible? Also, what's the difference between E series and S series? So, there's a lot of questions in there. >> There are. >> See what we can pound through. >> And I like this one because I actually know the answers off the top of my head, which is really nice. >> Awesome. >> And so, iTunes uses AAC, a protected AAC if you're buying it from the iTunes music store. Now, if you're ripping CDs in iTunes, it defaults to AAC. It's unprotected AAC. Now, if you purchased from iTunes an AAC file, it will not be compatible on anything except the iPods, period. >> IPods. >> So will not be compatible with the SONY Walkmans or the Creative ZEN X-Fi. Now, if you ripped AAC files from your own CD or you got them, you know, some other way, that don't have any protection and, yes, they will be compatible on the Sony or the Creative ZEN X-Fi cause they do play that type of file, just not the DRM protected version. Now, as far as the other question goes, which is what is the difference between the Walkman series, the Sony E series versus the Sony S series. So, basically, the S series has more stuff to offer you. The S series has the, not Genius, that's the iPod one. That series has the send me channels which is an auto play list creator on the device itself. It's really neat. You've actually just go in and it'll analyze all your songs on the device and pair them up in certain groupings like energetic or relaxed so that's a cool feature that it has. It has, the S series also has the podcast integration so that it recognizes podcasts. You can actually transfer podcasts directly to it from iTunes if you use iTunes to get podcasts, that's a good way to do it. >> [Inaudible] when podcasts first came out, it was kind of only like an iPod type thing but a lot of MP3 players are supporting it more and more. I mean, it's happened over time, but. >> Right. >> There's plenty of them now that do that. >> Yeah, I mean, technically, all MP3 players should podcast. >> Should, yes. >> Because they're usually MP3 format. But the way they handle them on the device itself, the iPod kind of started handling it the best, navigation-wise. Uh, so another thing that S series that has the noise cancellation capability built in with the noise canceling ear buds that are included. What else? It has, I think the third thing, or another thing, was Rhapsody DNA. I don't know if the E series has but it might. But, you're basically getting more features with the S series than you are with the E series. >> Okay, did you guys get all that? I told you, she has - >> I didn't even have to look that one up. >> Yeah, yeah, you're right. This is like, already, like, burned in your brain. >> Pretty much. >> That's awesome. >> But they usually don't ask me model numbers then I should be able to get it all right. >> All right, guys, start throwing in those model number question ones. He's in here a lot and he asks, are the Doctor Dre Monster Headphones worth the price tag? >> My thought on that is no. Actually, I would wait for the second generation before I dropped any money on those. I had a few issues with those, not the least of which is when you move around, the noise cancellation module, which is in the right ear, I think, shakes so you can actually hear it rattling when you're walking around. >> Oh, that's gnarly. >> And since they're, kind of, sort of, portable style like ear cup headphones, you don't want to have something that's making noise in your ear. I think they're really designed. They did sound very good. But they honestly need to hone it a little bit more before I'd want to recommend them. >> Do you recall about how much they were? Were they around two hundred, three hundred dollars? >> Three to three fifty, I believe. >> Oh, wow. >> Yeah, so they're up there. They're very stylish though. I definitely like the design a lot. >> Very cool. Okay. This question, we're just gonna, and sometimes, if we don't know the answer, it's okay because, you know, we don't know everything. But I'm just kind of taking them as they come. This question is from AllenIceMan. Hi, Jasmine. Hello, hello. With the recent firmware update and price cuts to the Zune, do you think it is finally a viable alternative to the iPod. I have my own thoughts on this, too, but why don't you fire away. >> I, you know, I'm a fan of the Zune. I think with the third, what I call the third generation which wasn't new hardware, but when they released the new software [inaudible] the last time around, they just did three point one. When they did three point oh, I thought that it really, you know, gained its ground cause it added more wireless features and a few other things I can't recall off the top of my head. I definitely think it's a viable alternative simply because it has, like, a couple of more features. One is that does FM radio with the RDS capabilities. So you can add that to the iPod but it is a value adding feature for the Zune. Now, that's totally personal, like, if you don't like FM, it's not gonna add any value. The other thing that I prefer about the Zune is the screen size. Just on an iPod Classic, the iPod Zune comparison, the iPod Zune screen is gonna be better for videos. So, it's a little bit more versatile as a player. And, you know, you could debate the sound quality. I think the Classic and Zune are about on the same level there. But I definitely think that it is a viable alternative. >> And even, you know, people were hanging on the Zune, obviously, in the very beginning, and as time has gone. >> [Inaudible] >> Yeah. As time has gone on, yeah, I've done prize fights on them, I actually like the product line. I like the interface on the Zune is actually really nice and the touch pad control is very slick, especially, like, on the smaller, the flash based ones. When you're on the little iPod Nano, you're fingers, like, can find this little circle motion and it can kind of be, like, annoying where you can just slide freely up and down with the Zune pad so I like that. And, the only thing that, probably, for me, personally, that holds it back other than compatibility, you know, because the Zune is PC specific, is that all the content that you can find on the iTunes store, if you're into, like, downloading TV shows and videos like that, it's not as robust as it is on the Zune marketplace. >> Right. >> But, you know, we still have podcast compatibility and the FM radio is integrated into it so it's really great. So, I think, you just play with them a little. I mean, if you've had an iPod for a long time, too, sometimes, when you have a device for so long, and then, interface. >> You get really, like - >> Yeah, you kind of like to say, I know it's great but I'm kind of, I might be a little over it and Zune is refreshing, so. >> Yeah, you can always go and try one out in, like, Best Buy or whatever. >> Yeah. >> I recommend it. And also, check out the software before you commit because you might not like the Zune software. It's gotten a lot better but that is one of my complaints about it. >> Okay. Cool. Did you see any questions that you liked or do you want me to just keep plugging away and see where we go? >> Oh, let's see. Any recommendations on cheap MP3 players that are compatible with iTunes? ^M00:10:00 >> Okay. Yeah, we'll do this one. Okay, this one is from CalSGRA. The question is, like you said, it's several but, any recommendations for cheap MP3 players that are compatible with iTunes? >> We, there are a few, actually. The top recommendation I would have is to look for Sandisk Sansa line because they're gonna be the cheapest MP3 players around, basically, and they are compatible with Macs. So either the Sansa Clip or the Sansafuze is gonna be a good option there. A couple of other ones that are compatible with the Mac, the new Sony Walkmans are, and then, Cowon. Cowon is generally gonna be pricier but I did see one Cowon player that was, like, under a hundred bucks for eight gigabytes called the U five. So, the Clip, the Fuze, look at the Walkmans, and the Cowon U fives. >> And like we've kind of talked before, it's about, also, the content. If it's protected AAC stuff, that's not gonna be able to go over to the Sansas, correct? >> Right. Okay, sorry. If you're talking about the iTunes store, it's only gonna be iPod. So iTunes a software so I was thinking Mac here, actually, iTunes software if different. So, there's some plug-ins that you can get for iTunes that actually will make it compatible with a variety of MP3 players. I think it's Bad Apple is the name of the site. But you can actually make iTunes compatible with a variety of players. The one I'm thinking off the top of my head that automatically is the Oakley THUMP. I'm sure the ones that are integrated into the sunglasses. Those are definitely not cheap though. >> And then, I don't know if they're that good looking either. >> The ones I mentioned will work with the Mac. So, you know, if you have iTunes on a Mac, you can kind of test that out. >> Okay, excellent. All right, this question is from SimpleBear. Off the top of your head, what's a good headphone for gaming or home theaters, fifty to one hundred dollar range? >> You know, that is - >> That's a lower range. >> Actually a question that I don't really have a definite answer to. You know, I don't generally review gaming or home theater headsets. What I would look at, I did see, I have a roundup of headphones for fifty dollars or less and there are a couple in there, if you search on CNET for headphones. Actually, I think you have to use Google, sorry about that. But if you search for headphone for under fifty dollars, we have a roundup and there are a couple of kind of on ear style on there. I would look at Sony, though. Sony generally has a good line of headphones in that price range that will work for those two features. >> Okay, excellent. This question is coming in from PacGamer, what is your favorite music organization software for you personally? >> Oh, I really, I don't have a favorite. Like, I don't - >> They all just did the job for you, right? >> Yeah, like, I don't really like very many of them to be honest with you. >> You're like - >> Because I use Rhapsody because of the subscription but I actually, really, don't like the way it organizes music, to be honest. I think that with, you know, the good thing about the Zune software and the iTunes is that you get that, kind of, album like view which I do really like. And, you know, Windows media player, I just kind of default to. I do like the Album Mark view there. The thing that I hear a lot of love for that I've only used a few times is MediaMonkey, people love MediaMonkey and they definitely get a lot of praise from other people. So, I don't know. I usually default to Windows Media Player just because, you know, I'm stuck in my ways, I guess. >> It's funny what you said about Album Mark because, like, when it first came out, I was, like, well, who's gonna care about Album Mark, right? It's just a picture. >> People love it, oh, my gosh. >> I remember, the first, I think, I spent my, after it came out, like, my first three nights, I basically was just, searching through Album Mark and I filled all my tracks with Album Mark. >> Yeah. >> It's just, it was, it became this, like, sick, like, I just got to do this. I ain't got no [inaudible]. >> [Inaudible] >> And then, when you have a track that doesn't have [inaudible], you're like, oh. >> I get annoyed because you have the Album Mark display on your MP3 player and also, if you want to have Album Mark, when there's no Album Mark, you get this, like, blank gray generic logo. >> Generic logo or crafty thing. >> Yeah. >> Totally. >> I don't like that. >> Okay, guys. All right? ^M00:13:54 [ music ] ^M00:13:58 >> iPod speakers are a dime a dozen these days so a good way to choose one that stands out from the crowd is to look for something that's the most advanced technology. I'm Jasmine France and I'm here with the JBL On Time four hundred IHD and what the HD stands for is high definition radio. Now, there are two main benefits to HD. One is that it's a higher quality feed than what you would traditionally get over the broadcast signal. Two, is that each station can actually have two spots on the frequency so you would have something like ninety-two point seven and then, ninety-two point seven dash two. So what that means is that you get a lot more content for your money. Now, in order to enjoy all that content, you're gonna have to pay a little bit more than what you would expect to pay for an iPod speaker. This, for example, costs three hundred dollars. Now, if you can get aboard with the pricing, the next thing to consider is the design. Now, I personally like this design. It's a little space age-y. Some people might now. I do like that it's a pretty small footprint. It will fit on your standard bedside table. It has a lot of controls on the top. It also includes a remote with a lot of controls. You can step up and down through the iPod menus from the remote control which is always a nice feature to have. The one thing I did notice about the buttons, both on the unit and on the remote is that they are not always responsive, so, that is a downside but it does work. Now, on the top here, you have buttons that'll take you into the different modes. Obviously, it will have an iPod mode which will play music from your iPod. It also has an AM mode and an FM mode and there's also an auxiliary line input mode. Now, another couple of buttons that I want to point out on the top of the unit here are the HD button and the tag button. Now, the HD button allows you to scan the frequency for HD stations only. And the tag button activates something called the iTunes tagging feature that displays the title of the song and the artist on the front here so you can know what you're listening to so it saves the song information to your iPod so that when you connect your iPod to your computer, you'll get a play list called tagging. The file feature that I really like on this is the alarm function and that is because you can set multiple alarms and you can wake up to the iPod or the radio or a buzz so are a lot of options for an alarm clock on here which is always important at a bedside. So if you're looking for the most cutting edge technology in an iPod speaker, the JBL On Time four hundred IHD is gonna give you that HD radio quality and it's one of the handful of units on that market today that has that. I'm just curious. >> I actually don't really like Skullcandy headphones. I haven't had a lot of, like, good lucky with getting, like, solid audio quality or good fit out of that. I have an affinity for V-moda, actually, because they're stylish. >> Yes. >> But they also have fit me well and they offered solid sound quality for the price. Another one to look at that's, it's a new company that's come out in the last year is Radius and they make affordable earphones, again, heavy on the bass. Like, these, you know, you get these kind of stylish headphones, they're always heavy on the low wend. So if you're looking for something with a lot of low end, I would look at the Radius ones. There's a couple of new ones out there, and they're very affordable. They're like fifty bucks and less. So, those are my recommendations. >> And a lot of times, I think, one thing that people kind of forget is they always talk about sound quality but it's, like you said, it's how it fits your ear. >> Mm-hmm. >> Everyone's ears are different. Like, some people go crazy with, like, the default headphones that come with their MP3 players and things like that, so - >> Right. Fit is a huge thing. I think fit is actually even above sound quality when it comes to portable headphones because you're listening to MP3s and compressed files anyway. So, really, the good fit is what I would go after. >> Okay, awesome. This question coming up is from Winston Leon six seven five eight. I just wanted to say your whole name so you'd feel special. Okay, is the Pioneer, you know, X MP3 a good portable XM player or would you recommend any other one? >> I think, you know, I don't, we don't get a lot of these because there aren't a lot of them. And considering this is the newest one out there, it has the most updated technology and, you know, design that, yes, I would go for that if you're looking for a portable XM radio. You're always gonna get issues with dropout of signals when you're doing this strictly hand held portable satellite radio. So that's, you know, that's always gonna happen. But, as far as the ones that I've gotten my hands on, the X MP3 which is the newest one was the best one. So, yeah, sure, get it. >> Okay. Go do it. Okay, PacGamer, now, are you willing to take some personal questions, as he says? >> Sure. >> No relationship questions guys. Okay, PacGamer asks a couple of personal questions. Your favorite portable player and why? >> My favorite portable player and why. It's so hard to choose. No, actually, I do have a favorite player and kind of recent. It's the Sony NWZS six thirty-eight specifically. This is one that I had to memorize. I actually wrote a little love ode to this player on CRAVE so you can check that out, but this is the Sony S series walkman, but, without the noise canceling. Because I don't like active noise canceling. I have noise passes sound isolation earphones already. So, that player, for me, is just perfect. It has everything that I want. It has podcast integration. It has Rhapsody DNA. It doesn't go up to sixteen which I don't like. It's flash player only goes up to eight gigabytes. No memory expansion but, you know, just, it sounds fantastic, the screen is really nice, not for video but just, you know, for strictly music playback. What else about it? Oh, the genius, not genius. Gosh, I keep saying that. The seventeen channels, like, auto DJ function, I really like. It's just, it's kind of the perfect player for me. >> Excellent. Okay. Your favorite music genres. >> Oh, I like all music genres. My favorite's probably new wave, actually, which is a little embarrassing. ^M00:20:03 But, I really don't discriminate. I mean, I don't listen to a whole lot of classical or country, but pretty much, everything else. I listen to [inaudible], electronica, hip-hop, pop, mainstream, not mainstream, I'm not discriminatory. >> When you said you don't discriminate, I was like, I really hope she discriminates against country. >> I, you know - >> Personally. >> I do like a couple, you know, country songs. >> Mainstream country songs? >> Yeah, well, you know, like Dixie Chicks or something. AllenIceMan asks, I'm looking for a secondary MP3 player for the gym, something small and an FM tuner would be a bonus. Jake asks, is there a difference between AAC and WMA in terms of quality and size? >. That's debatable. The short answer is no. I'm really, they're about on par as far as, like, you know - >> [Inaudible] >> Any kind of, you know, testing goes. This is all just, kind of, based on, you know, hearsay. There's been some data collected on this, like, with blind listening tests and everything. But, for the most part, you're not gonna notice the difference at the bit rates that they use, so, both the same. >> And again, it's all subjective. Everyone's ears listen and hear different. Everyone's ears have different preferences to what they like. >> Exactly. >> So, I mean, sound quality, when they measure it scientifically, it's a good benchmark but I always kind of laugh at that cause I'm like, well, I just want to hear what it sounds like to me. >> Yeah, exactly. >> When we did an earphone price fight, all this had different parts on which earphone - >> Yeah, that's why price rights are actually great for headphones because, like I said, never trust a head phone interview. You've got to listen to it yourself. >> Okay, this question is from Ben A G. I always thing of saying Benog. But it's BenAG89. What's up, Ben? Could you explain why the actual storage capacities of MP3 players vary from the advertised storage? For example, I bought a four gig player but the actual storage, I can use only three point two three gigs. >> Yeah, that's very little, actually. But it's from wear. That's what the, basically, they have a four gigabyte flash chip in there, period. And they have to use a proportion of it for the software that's on the device itself. >> Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. Okay, here we go. This question is from Ted 1508. I'm seeing a lot of names I haven't seen here before. This is good. You're bringing in the numbers. >> Woo-hoo. >> You're bringing in many, all right, what would be the best choice for ear buds around forty to sixty dollars? >> Again, I'm liking the V-Moda and the Radius. V-Moda Bass Freak, the issue with those is they do have durability issues based on user feedback. I didn't have them. Those are around, the Base Freaks are around forty, exactly, I think. Also, the Radius Atomic Bass. Again, heavy on the bass here. I think those go for like thirty or forty dollars. Yeah, that's, and then, you know, Sony MDRs do a good job, too. You can usually find some Sony ones around that price range. I don't review a whole lot of them but, those are my recommendations. >> Okay, cool. Uh, I can help out with this one. This question is from Da504Chief and if you have any suggestions, please chime in. He asks, is there a method of getting my iPod music on my PS3? So, yes, but there's a few things that we should mention. I mean, we're not advocating for you to rip, you know, let's say you have a bunch of songs that your friend's having illegally, you know, use software that music that kind of protected or not. In other words, you can, though, if the music is yours and their MP3 format's, there are software apps that allow you to, at least, get the music from your iPod, as like a backup, put it on your computer, and then, whether you put it on, like, a flash driver or whatever, you can then transfer those songs over onto the physical hard drive of your PS3. So, for my recommendation, use it. I own the PSP and own a DS. If you are definitely a mobile gamer, if you want gaming, first of all, that's a great [inaudible] cause it can do all of those things at one. But, I wouldn't go out and buy a PSP just to be a dedicated video player and a music player. You can get those features in, the iPod Touch was an Editor's Choice rated. There's plenty of other devices with great streams like the Zune that have large screens. Even some of those, what is it? Why can't I, I can't think of it off the top of my head. And mostly because of the usability issue, actually, because the most cell phones that are integrated MP3 players just aren't the best to use. They're not the easiest thing to use. So, for me, this is a no brainer. I talk about this on my podcast all the time. I want my MP3 player to be separate from my cell phone. Now, one exception may be, you're is an iPhone? I think the iPhone does a really good job of, you know, integrating MP3. It's a better MP3 player than a cell phone, one could argue. >> Yes, that's true. >> But, yeah, for me, it's separate. It's a battery issue. It's a usability issue. Sound quality, you know, I don't test the music phones a lot so I couldn't do a comparison there but my assumption is that there's better audio chips in an MP3 player. >> Mm-hmm, totally. Okay.
