New quests, Nolan North & more in Destiny 2.0 - GameSpot's The Lobby

Gaming Hardware
Destiny's been out for a year I'd say. << Yeah << Time for new Destiny 2.0 Mike Mahardy. << Yeah << You guys excited? You don't look it. << I am, I am. << Big Destiny fans playing all year, you've been trying to sell me on Destiny all year Take the King is just around the corner. Tell me what this new patch, this is for everyone, right? Yep, yep. Tell me what it gives to players, whether or not they're getting Take the King or not. Well, you wanna go? You wanna take it? All right, fine. I'll start and then you can fill Fill in the gaps already. You've been playing this morning? I played some, the pad is actually pretty big, it's like almost 18 gigs, so be ready for that. If you have crappy internet good luck, even for us with fast internet it was pretty slow. If you have a bandwidth cap, good luck. [LAUGH] Guess so, A lot of quality of life, I've kind of harkened to this a bunch, but it makes a big difference. Just like UI itself is way better. You got better questing. There's new quests. There's a better way of tracking your quests that you didn't have before that's MMO style. You can kinda stamp it on your main screen. Oh, cool. Like okay, what do I need to keep doing? I need to kill seven more dudes instead of going back to my options. You have 16 Bounty slots now up from ten, so more stuff to do. On top of that, let's see what else is there? There's new kiosks. Your kiosks kind of house a lot of your stuff, like your shaders. Your ships, they don't kinda have to carry all that stuff with you anymore. You can just pick the ones you want. And of course, there's new shaders and ships coming and taking king as well. Is there a new inventory system as well in this, by the way? There's more vault space. They've doubled it, which is a pretty big deal. In terms of inventory, specifically with gears, or what do you mean? Yeah. Well now you can do class items which can be just aesthetic. And if you're just trying to get reputation for certain factions and PVP stuff it would go towards that orbit, future monarchy. But now those actually give you defense as well as certain Stat, like intellect, discipline, strength, and your ghost shell also, so now that it's Nolan North, you can call it, I don't know, your gun shell or something. Yeah, so Peter Dinklage out, Nolan North in, and you've been listening to it this morning. Both of you. Mike, what do you think about his performance? I like it a lot more. I think Peter Dinklage was kind of a novelty, just because it was Peter Dinklage in a video game and it was. I got so used to hearing him say all these lines when you're doing the story missions that I kind of forgot, you know, how good it can be to actually have a voice actor who's obviously, he's a little more than a veteran. Mm. So, he sounds a lot more like C3PO, it's kind of that computerized, digital- Yeah, crazy modulation on the voice sort of stuff. Yeah. Yeah, or Chris Waters had made the comparison to 343 Guilty Spark from Diablo, and that's definitely the best comparison. Sounds a lot like that high pitched kinda emphatic. I'm really happy to be here and tell you everything, but I like it a lot. It's a nice change, it's not as monotone as [UNKNOWN] was. It's interesting actually considering the sort of news over the weekend about the [UNKNOWN] and how much the story changed. Apparently the story was kind of completely overhauled. I wonder if we'll find out, in a couple years, that Dinklage had lots of lines dropped. Or it was a totally different type of character, or something to that end. Because clearly this voice performance has been done with these scripts that we have right now in mind. In terms of these, we'll talk about the questions in a second, but in terms of these -- Sort of overall changes to UI and quality of life stuff. Is it stuff you think Eric that Destiny finds we're looking for, is this like the list of things that you would've wanted, or are these kind of piecemeal changes that you're happy for, but you didn't really know you wanted? I think there are probably some changes that I'm like, oh that's really cool that I had that, I don't know if I aspired to have a lot of these changes, but like We've had this conversation in the office, me and Mike, about how kinda of some of these UI changes and some of these quality of life changes are kind of what Reaper of Souls did for Diablo III. Right. It's a really big deal. And like you kinda don't really think about them until you actually have them, and then you're just like, oh wow, this is like, tremendously better. Mm-hm. Or this is, why didn't we have this before. And you just It just simplifies things. It makes things cleaner, better. And then because of that, you like it. Like the fact that you can turn in bounties without having to go into the tower? That's a pretty big deal. You know, like something like that. And another big kinda change that's gonna help people that maybe haven't played it as much or even people that have played it, is you can use your ghost now to scan Like, stuff in the world. Then Dan was also telling me that when you go onto a patrol mission, Nolan bot- or whatever we want to call it- will actually tell you a story instead of like before when he would say 'let's see how we can do here.' Instead, he'll give you a small narrative. There's a bit more that's been added in there as well. Did we mention the light system? I don't think we mentioned it. No. That's all been changed up as well, right? People that have played a lot of Destiny, like hey, you know to get to 34, or anything above 20 it's all reliant on life, which each armor piece inherently has a certain, above a certain level has a number of life. So up until that point, it's a general, you grind XP by completing missions, but then after level 20 it's Turns in to this, yeah, this other form of currency basically. Of course. So now light is not actually based off of certain items you get. It's an average of all your total defence and offence. So it's not the stats that's tying in to your level as much, it's more an indicator of how good your gear is. But later on we were playing the patch today and a lot of Higher level story, heroic missions like hard difficulty. Or I'll recommend this amount of light. So now it's kind of telling you your character's probably not good enough. You have to do this. All right. .> But that's all tied to just playing more and finding better things and finding quests that are gonna give you legendary rewards So from what I've played, I've played a lot of 2.0 at this point just prior to today and it was, it definitely seemed like your time is being respected more. I think Tay and I kinda differ because in- What's your- he loves grinding so he might disagree with me. Love to grind. Like I mean side Point to what he just actually said, that actually I didn't think about til right now. The fact that we can't do heroic story now because of a finite number of, I think you have to be 240 white. Yeah. Does that mean that anyone that doesn't buy Taken King can't actually get there? Cuz we can't get there right now. Because there's just not enough- I think you can only play like normal missions. Well, no. I think when Taken King releases in a week, the year two stuff will be enough to get you to light. Regardless whether or not you have Ten King or not. The patch itself, you will get better stuff next week right? I don't know, I'm not sure if you can actually get that stuff from legendaries, so if that's the case, that's kind of ****, I hope that's not, we'll investigate further. But I like, in terms of the grind, I think that I enjoy it, I look forward to the raid, and I think this time around Having the raid back after not having it in the house of wolves is a pretty big deal and I think it will also help differentiate some of the hardcore players from maybe some of the more casual players, but the casual players this time around have so much more to do. Yeah So many more quests and stuff to farm and grind and theyre trying to reward you more and make your experience Kinda more rewarding. Like you said to respect your time. As Mike was saying, which I think is fine, I just hope that it doesn't become like super easy. Like, too casual. I don't want it to go like WoW Cataclysm, where it's like, looking for raid. All right. Like Press a button. Yeah. And like, my buddy's AFK, eating dinner. I'm like what are you doing, man? [LAUGH] He's like, Oh, I'm eating dinner. It's all right, like you guys got this. Yeah, I have this right click add on. It just does the game for me. Yeah, so I don't think it's going to be like that, it's just, I don't want it to gravitate too far over. I know what they're doing, they're trying to find a happy medium between- Appeasing the hard core- Appeasing to the hard core and also kind of Bringing new people in, casting a wider [INAUDIBLE]. Do you think that like if you were to guess the percentage of the amount of Destiny players that are gonna buy Taken King what would you say? Like currently so they're playing. Oh I would say like 80, 80 plus percent, 90 maybe. I was gonna say 70. It feels like that edge though, it feels like at least two thirds. If you're saying like regular players yeah I agree it's probably like 80 it seems pretty. Pretty monumental as far as how much it is going to change the game, especially after next week. Because, anybody who, even if you spend your entire time playing patrol missions you'll hit 40 if you play enough. It'll take you a lot longer than the way Pei plays or I play, but it is just. It's acceptable for people that want to just be casual for it and it's also, you know, there's still exotic bounty chains and whatnot that you can if you want to go through the grind of that you can get those specific weapons and everything. So from what I have seen, from my understanding, it seems like it's doing a good job of enveloping both kinds of players. Yeah. I think they're gonna get more people too because imagine if you didn't buy the expansions but you played Destiny, right. Yeah. You're paying 60 bucks. You're paying $60, I think. I'm pretty sure. You're paying $60 for both expansions and [UNKNOWN]. You get all of that for 60 bucks instead of like, what, 80 for us? So does that sour you at all? No. But we've had this conversation before. I feel like it's Like the time I spent playing the game, for costs associated, great. Great for me, perfect for me. Good investment. But not, like, not a good investment for everyone. Like, someone that buys Destiny, plays it for like four or five hours, like maybe yourself, doesn't like where it's going, you stop. Bad $60 investment. I pay twenty dollars for an expansion, I get two to four weeks if not more of content that's plenty of investment. << Not bad, alright, Teagan King we'll have a review up on Game Spot soon.<< We will have a review up in progress on Tuesday because we have to play the raid which comes out on the 18th. << Ok, so by this day next week we'll have a review in progress. Teddy and myself, and four other people from the office will be going at that. Okay, cool. So, we'll have to get you back on next week then? Tell us all about how that one's playing. We'll probably Livestream it too, so. Oh yeah? Sweet. Also, we have a running bet. What's the running bet? Oh man. Steak dinner. Oh ****- We found a fatal flaw Steak dinner? Who? In Teddy's plan. Just the two of you? Yup. Who can reach 40 first. Who can reach 40? And. A fatal flaw in his plan, today. Which, it shouldn't effect it that much. I -- Tell us on the internet, we'll let you know if it's alright or not. I prefer medium rare, just for -- What is it? What's the flaw. He just has one more bounty than I do so it's like a little bit more experience. I thought it was going to be worse than that, because- since the patch came out, today -- I was planning ahead of time but I didn't plan ahead for this patch and how the patch actually changed some of the mechanics of the game. Right. So then I kinda screwed myself but then it turns out he wasn't that far ahead, so I'm not that worried. And he's played it already technically a little bit so that's why. No problem. Medium rare. You both like medium rare? [CROSSTALK] Medium rare is all right. You should have them ready for right around the cusp of 40. Yeah, there you go. Mary agrees All right. Maybe we'll have medium rare steak out in the lobby next week. Thanks so much for joining us, gentlemen. You folks watching at home, let us know what you think of Destiny 2.0 the patch. Have you downloaded it yet? Is it still downloading? Are you not watching this right now so you can get that extra bandwidth and play some more goddamned Destiny? And they are going to pick up the tech king. Let us know in the comments below. [MUSIC]
