Most iPhone users I know go about this far with voice control. They press and hold the Home button or the headphone remote until the voice control screen comes up and then they call up the contact by saying, call and the name of the person. "Call Donald Bell."

>> Donald: That's fine and sometimes you feel kind of robotic speaking people's full names in your phone. If you want to teach your iPhone to respond to nicknames open up a contact and hit the edit button in the upper right corner then scroll all the way to the bottom and find a selection called Add Field. When you click on this you'll find a whole bunch of useful options including a field for giving a contact a nickname. Nicknames can also be helpful when there's someone with a complicated name that would otherwise trip-up the voice recognition. If you're not into the whole brevity thing the same menu includes fields for phonetically spelling out first and last names, which can go a long way to helping voice control work properly. And while we're in here, even though it has nothing to do with voice control, it's worth knowing that you can use this same menu to enter birthdays, general notes and any other important dates like anniversaries.
