Going hands-on with Apple's CarPlay update in iOS 13
Apple has a big update coming to its devices later this fall.
It's called iOS 13.
But perhaps the most interesting part of it isn't actually on the device.
It's on your infotainment screen.
There is a big update to Car Play coming.
So, let's walk through some of the changes.
There are some slight changes to the car play home screen.
The date and reception information are now on the top left.
While the home button on the bottom left has been removed in favor of a new dashboard button.
This gives you a one stop shop of access to Apple Maps.
The music that's currently playing in addition to quick nav suggestions up top and series suggestions at the bottom those series suggestions can lead to a whole new feature in OS 13 car play update a calendar app.
Your phone can now display the day's events.
And if there's an address included with that appointment, a couple quick taps will get Maps Navigation system up and running.
calendar also lays out the rest of your day, but it's only for reference with no ability to add new events on the fly.
The design has been tweaked in other ways as well.
The phone app and a few others now have a lighter bubble kind of design surrounding each entry making it slightly easier to delineate certain types of content at a glance in order to help reduce distraction.
The phone app also has a quick access button for Siri, which is much easier than trying to wander through the whole contacts list to make a call.
The music app looks a little different to with new album art being displayed to the right of the usual controls.
The rest of the app has been rearranged as well.
And now there's a new streaming radio section that can pull up stations that aren't within your current range.
Maps is more straight forward too, with a new default screen offering quick access to your favorite locations in addition to an easily accessible search function which can be operated with a traditional keyboard, or by using your voice.
Speaking of Siri, she no longer takes up the whole screen when it's time to say something.
Coffee.
[SOUND] Okay, one option is Madcap Coffee on Farmer Street.
Siri's usefulness has expanded, too.
You can now use voice commands in third-party navigation and music apps, further reducing the need to fiddle with the screen behind the wheel.
Navigate to a coffee shop using Waze.
Okay.
One option is madcap coffee farmer Street garden getting directions to the Guardian coffee shop using race.
There is also a new settings menu.
It lets you activate Do Not Disturb while driving with a quick press.
And it also engages the new daytime mode which offers a lighter UI during daylight hours.
If you still prefer dark mode though, don't worry, you can leave that on full time.
As you can tell the update to car play is pretty comprehensive.
Best of all, don't have to pay a dime for it.
It comes free with the iOS 13 update to your phone, look forward to that in the fall.
