Ford to introduce autonomous cars by 2021.
The CEO of Ford, Mark, Fields, announced that Ford will produce SAE level 4 capable vehicles by 2021 and a ride hailing or ride sharing serve.
SAE level 4 is defined as high automation.
Which means the car will be able to respond even if a human fails to do anything.
SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers.
For comparison, Telsa's autopilot feature is between level two or level three.
Both levels require a human driver to intervene if needed.
Ford said it is going to level four, since the company cannot figure out a way to safely hand off driving duties from a car to a person.
These new Ford cars will have no steering wheel, no gas pedal, no break pedal, and not require a driver.
Ford says its new cars will be specifically for ride hailing and ride sharing.
Ford CEO said that Ford is not just an auto company anymore, it's a mobility company.
Additionally, Ford announced new deals with four companies.
One of those companies, Velodyne, specialize in LiDAR technology.
LiDAR stands for light detection and ranging and it helps something like a car see objects around it.
Ford is also working with a neural scientist.
To build intelligence into its vehicles.
