>> Hey, it's Justine Yu, Assistant Editor for CNET.com and I am sitting next to the Epson Artisan 800 multi functional printer. Now Epson calls it an all-in-one because it's not just a printer it also acts as a copy machine, scanner and fax machine. The design of the printer is pretty different from other all-in-one we've tested. For example, it's got the stylish glossy black finish and it's fairly spelt for all the functions it can do. There's a huge 3.5-inch touch screen LCD on the front of the printer that's hinged for different angles and there's a DVD/CD tray below it that let's you copy pictures directly from a memory card or print out custom disc labels. Now, our main gripe with this printer though and it's a pretty substantial one, is the build quality and functionality of the paper handle and trays. First, the paper guide is so thin that it fells like it's about to snap off at any second. Also the paper input tray itself is pretty prone to paper jams. And that's because of this confusing notch marks you see inside. Epson forces you to line up this tab with a series of convoluted notch marks and if you're an extremely precise in your placement the printer will start picking up several sheets at a time and eventually jam up the device. This happened to us so often throughout our testing that we almost spent more time clearing up jams than actually testing out the printer. Now aside from buggy software drivers and poor mechanical choices the Artisan 800 is actually capable of producing quality prints in record time. Now we printed out a wide variety of sizes in several quality settings and they all turned out very pleasing. In addition, Epson makes it very easy to personalize your pictures by adding templates for custom coloring books, passport photos, index sheets, greeting cards, etcetera. Now these all add to the user experience and might even help you to forget about the paper jams, but not likely. Now, despite the high quality prints we just can't ignore the fact that half the time the printer doesn't even work. Now, for the sake of your sanity and in the interest of your precious time we recommend checking out different all-in-one printers that won't give you a migraine. So I'm Justine Yu and this is the Epson Artisan 800 multi function printer.
