Alison Haislip on video games, escape rooms and Elon Musk (Tomorrow Daily 306)

On today's show, we take a deep dive into [UNKNOWN] film festival's VR exhibit and what they mean for your eyeballs. And this week was full of drone stories, drones running on cars, drones swimming. We're gonna talk about all the drones that are fit to drone. We also welcome wonderful guest Aliston [UNKNOWN] to the studio. And her conversations are pretty delightful. It's Thursday. Yeah. Let's do it, what have we got on the docket? Let's check those headlines. [MUSIC] First up, Sundance Film Festival. Yeah, they are highlighting the future of media, the future of entertainment, by having a bunch of stuff that you could watch In your very own home. You don't have to brave the frigid snow of Sundance. Which I like. All you have to do is brave the frigid Google goggles. The frigid world of being alone in virtual reality. Yeah. [LAUGH] Lots of VR stuff at Sundance this year and I think that we both agree that this is a harbinger of things to come. Yeah. Definitely. I mean, when you look at last year Sundance had some VR. This year it's expanded even more. They have hundreds of entries for new frontier Which is a project that they do every year now at Sundance they have to do the virtual reality experiences, virtual reality story telling, documentaries, things like that. And there are a lot of different things going on at Sundance, so one of the things that we talked about earlier this week was the Leviathan Project. The Leviathan Project is about the books that have the same name. You get, and the virtual reality is that you get in the whale and you are flying around In the whale. all over the place. Yeah you just How many times do I Have to tell you, get int he whale. Flying whales guys, flying whales. Really neat stuff. And this was actually built, we did some more research and learned a little bit more about this, this was actually built, the Leviathan Project was built using Unity 3D. Mm-hm. Which is pretty amazing. And they're obviously really involved in a lot of virtual reality, Unity and Unreal are kind of the two major forerunners for, I mean just game engines in the first place. Yeah. But also, Unity particularly is like super into 3D and VR. Right now so really cool stuff actually. And of course we all know that VR's gonna be huge for video games or at least has the potential to be huge for video games. I think that it's interesting to see Sundance, which is not a video game centric experience, it is very much more movies and television and passive entertainment. I think it's clear that VR is going to affect those exactly Just as revolutionarily as there can be with video games. Because you have these experiences that you can be put inside of. And while it's gonna change how those things are delivered, you're not gonna have a director tell you what shot you're looking at. I think it has the ability to add empathy To these stories in a way we've never felt before because you are inside the experience. Yeah, so empathy-wise, I thought one of the really interesting experiences that they showed off as part of one of the installations, like one of the exhibits you could check out was A story about a woman who I believe woke up from a coma. And she is in a wheel chair and you are that woman. yeah. And so there's people that come and talk to you. Like your friends and family and everything. And part of that is people reported feeling such a sense of empathy for that woman in the wheel chair. Yeah. They felt like they were that person. So it's no longer. Necessarily with VR you have this opportunity to make it about the person wearing the headset as opposed to a protagonist that is different. Yeah. You have this sort of opportunity to kind of make it about anybody who puts the headset on. Yeah, and I suspect that there will be plenty of These kinds of movie experiences that aren't even in first person, that just put you in the scene. And it's all happening around you. And you can look wherever you choose. That will still be very impactful from a sympathy point of view, from an empathy point of view because you're inside the experience rather than looking at it on 2D plane. Through a, right, through a window, if you will. You're not looking at something from outside the window. You're in it. Yeah, Oculus Story Studio. Did this Henry. You know, you're looking at this cute little protagonist, and even in a cartoon world, you can still empathise better, and sort of experience that world in a way that wasn't really possible before virtual reality. Yeah. So I think this form of entertainment is, I mean we talk about VR a lot, it's only gonna get better. It's always evolving, it's always improving, but Truly seeing a film festival like Sundance, which is a very prestigious film festival really embraced VR. Yeah. Not only acknowledge it, but really say this matters and this is really important and we should really pay attention to this and look at all the great things people are making. Yeah. i think Reggie Watts has a music video in this year's final, like he's one of the finalists. There's kind of a one that just reminds me of like an acid trip. It's really weird and just it, Ryan [UNKNOWN]. Pink elephant scene in Dumbo, things were just happening, you don't know what's going on. It is a surreal experience. I think artists should be really excited about this. They can operate off the Dolly thing we saw this week. I mean artists can give people a glimpse into their images. I mean if you're an artist we're on the cusp of having a brand new palette for you to work with, a brand new canvas. And I think that is Pretty cool. We're right on the edge. Right there. Just the beginning, so yeah it's exuberating. It is exciting to be around at this time. So we've talked about VR. Hey TD, our lovely viewer. Out there. Use the hash tag hey td to talk to us about this. I totally love we got a lot of feedback. Marcos wrote in and said, hey TD saw the show. Wanted to let you know Leviathan was all created with unity3d and would love to talk more about how VR is created. So yea, Unity 3D. Super big part of Leviathan project, which looked gorgeous. And then Hakeem wrote in, hey TD, saw a virtual reality bit on the show and the first thing that came to mind was when will they start selling VR concert tickets? I think that's going to happen. A bench ticket? In fact, here we are two weeks before the Super Bowl, my prediction is, next year's Super Bowl you'll be able to watch in VR. I think you're probably right. If it doesn't happen next year it's going to be really soon. But I really do think by next year there's going to be the ability to be able to watch, at least, the half time show or some of the game in VR. Let me ask you this, let me ask you this. Yeah. Do you think, because I think this will happen They will monetize based on where the VR has set it in the stands. Crazy. Buy a virtual ticket, and if you want sideline then you have to pay more than like [INAUDIBLE]. About a hundred and fifty bucks. If you want nosebleeds about five, ten bucks. I've got a virtual nosebleed. Crazy. That would be really depressing but I see that happening because there is an opportunity to monetize there. Yoshifumi wrote to us and said hey TD, I want to love VR but my cardboard makes me queasy. Do you think the tech can advance? It already has. Yes. I mean, cardboard of course is a $20 solution to this that relies on your Cell phone and it's amazing that it works as well as it does in my opinion. But that is a far cry form the $00, $800, $1000 potential standalone solutions that Occulus and Vive and Morpheus, well not Morpheus anymore. Sony PlayStation VR PlayStation VR Are going to be, those going to be much more advance, the frame rate's going to be better. Stream quality, frame rate, refresh rate. I mean, this is all, these all are factors that Oculus has really done a good job minimizing them, so has Vibe. I'm really looking forward to seeing what PlayStation VR ends up doing with it too. Okay, so that was our feedback. So let's move on to our next story, which really is three stories in one. It's a cornucopia of stories. We are in the, I think, the heyday of drones. The age of the drone. Where we are on cusp of VR we're also on the cusp, in my opinion, of drone legislation. Yeah. And right now it's the old west. It's the wild west. Lawlessness abounds. You can do pretty much anything with drones, and that's why we're seeing so many of these cool drone stories, about all the crazy wacky stuff people are trying with them. They are doing a lot of really great things. So We saw this week, we talked about drones flying through glaciers. Amazing. Amazing. Because they built a rig on the thing that like transfers impact energy into just rotational energy, so it doesn't stop it. Like we're looking at the video now. Yeah, and it just hits the wall, and you know, the little cage just rolls around or whatever. And then the drone just keeps going. It's incredible. And so they took it through this A crevasse in the Swiss Alps. Which, I got to tell you, like this is one of my greatest fears. You know how most people fear like open water? Yeah. My biggest fear is being in an icy place and having the earth open up and swallow me. [LAUGH] What? I am terrified of that. That is a very real fear for me, so to watch this video, One, super nerve wracking because I'm afraid of heights too. And that to me is like the ground all of a sudden turns into a very high up place, and that makes me super nervous. You know, that's pretty rare. [LAUGH] I know it is but I, but my luck stipulates that it could happen to me. That it would happen. I just know, in my In my paranoid mind that it would happen to me. I would be the person to get swallowed up by the earth and then the crevasse would just close and that no one would find me. The cool thing about this though is this is an example of something you would just not get video of. There's no way a human being could get you video of that. Yeah, I mean you could use, I'm sure. And we've seen stuff like this on. Natural, what am I thinking of? National Geographic. National Geographic. We've seen stuff like that kind of, but it's like you drop a pole down that has the camera attached to it. You're not getting the same experience that you're getting here. It's just not the same. It's pretty [INAUDIBLE]. Or you could send a person down there, which is Super dangerous and maybe get some helmet cam footage. Yeah. But not like that. Not actually [UNKNOWN] she's not going down. No, yeah. We also saw a drone land on a moving car. We did. Which is pretty cool in the sense of being able to, we see the drones land in spots, you can set a target down and land. But to have it on a moving target, I think Is something new and it opens up a whole realm of possibilities for how you can deliver things to stuff on the move, that's pretty cool. Right, and also I mean, I think the really big part of this story is the fact that the goal here is to remove landing here from a drone. Yeah. So they're saying we want To be able to land a drone in a place that does not require landing gear so that we can increase what payload equipment on board, whatever it is. Range even if you have the same payload as before, you can increase the range cuz the craft is lighter. Yeah. I think this is a huge deal and I think that if for example if Amazon maybe at some point they wanna do this cuz they wanna increase the range. So they send you in the mail So for five bucks, ten bucks, whatever, you get your landing pad code, your little landing pad. And then you also get a net like the one we have and then the drone lands there, drops off your stuff, and then splits. Can we just have McDonald's get these? So when I'm driving down the freeway and I'm like I don't even wanna pull off the freeway It is a drive-through. Just deliver my McRib right to my car via drone. I think it works as soon as we have self-driving cars. Cuz then you just open up, literally, just open up the sunroof, let the drone just drop the bag right in and then just fly way. You just push the McRib button. And it flies to you. Tesla is gonna have a McRib button for sure. You're welcome, Tesla. That's all I'm saying, SpaceX has to have a McRib button. Yeah, McRib drones, a fleet. Then we also had a drone that can swim. I loved this video so much, it was so great. So, Oakland University has this drone that can Fly in the air like a standard drone. It can also skim the top of a body of water, so they have it take a dip in the pool here. So there it goes. It's like, I'm gonna go along on the surface, just chill. It's drone paddling. Yeah. It is drone paddling. Awe, it's cute. It's droney paddling. And then, It fills up the chamber with water. The pump basically stops working, stops pumping out water, and it goes and dives and then as soon as it hits ninety degrees, props turn on. Amazing. And there it goes. It's awesome. I absolutely love this and really, to me this will be used Technology could be used in retail drones because there are so many people who accidentally drop them or crash them in bodies of water. Yeah.>> And it's like why not have something that could A survive that, like we're really seeing if you combine all these drones I mean this is a Superdrone. This is the drone that BatMan would make if he made drones. He'd be like I need a drone that's both Amphibias machine and a sky machine. Yeah. It's incredible. I don't know a practical application. I mean I understand where you're coming from. Then isn't studying marine life like that was one of the things. Yeah. And then taking to the sky after you've found something new. Well. So this was very interesting that I think that the example, one of the examples they gave was they said, you know, the drone could be hovering over, say, migration paths of Great White Sharks. Yeah. And then could get in the water and look at how many or what exactly what they were doing. So it was, it was a multi-step kind of application where it would do something in the sky then it would be on the surface and kind of watch and then it would dive and be able to see more What I take away from this is that when Skynet comes online there will be nowhere to hide. Ever. No. Nowhere. Sky nor land nor sea below- Nope. will keep you safe from the drone armies. We haven't quite had a drone that can dig like a mole. So maybe it's real. I'm sure it's coming. I'm sure it's coming. Yeah, I don't know. [LAUGH] SpikeTiger wrote in and said let's get drone training wheels for everyone. Drone training wheels. I think that's the answer to people needing safer drones. Yeah, I think that's our cage analogy is it just Bump into stuff, who cars. Bumper cars. We built a cage on it. Bumper drones, Yeah, Actually, if I could do bumper drones at a carnival. Like we used to be able to do the little boats. You put in a dollar in quarters and just drive a boat around. Yeah, bumper drones would be fun. I mean, maybe this cage system Will allow people who aren't so good at flying drones to fly them. And then you'll be able to just do stupid stuff and it's okay cuz your drone doesn't get hurt. Yeah, I like it, I like it. Extreme drones. Nerf the drones. Extreme drones. Yeah. Exactly right. Amazing. Okay, so most people Who have followed your career for awhile. They know you from stuff like G4 Yeah. You used to be on G4. And that's kinda like where you started, right? I mean, I was doing a little acting gigs here and there. Prior but yeah I was also bartending as most aspiring actors do in Los Angeles. I'm still bartending. We're all still bartending. And we were like why don't we just record it. And then all the sudden it became very successful. And we were like, that's interesting. People like listening to us. [LAUGH] But yeah we get together once a week and have a drink. And for about 30 minutes, hence the reasons the half hour happy hour. We talk about, just the random bizarre stories that you see on the internet. Like, say when you click on one thing and you're reading this article, and then you look over to the side and you're like, I'm sorry. A Russian man died at a party and then came back to life and went back to the party. Gonna read that. Right yeah. Yeah. Those are really [INAUDIBLE] story. The grab bag of life if you will Yes exactly. What percentage of stories would you say come out of Florida on your show? There's definitely a big selection of Florida stories. Yeah. And weirdly enough I feel like our podcast has become like an Elon Musk fan boy. Podcast. Wow. Because Tesla's been doing so much lately, and- A lot. We get so excited about it. So we sit there and we're like, and if I had a Tesla I'd be doing this, and it can self-park into the garage. I'm like- Yeah, we talk about that a lot here too. Yeah. That'd be so nice. So do you think? Well, let's talk about this. Since you like to talk about [INAUDIBLE] let's talk about. Let's talk about self driving cars. Yeah. Are you for self driving cars, or are you against it, because a lot of people are afraid. Well, I honestly kind of believe the only way that self-driving cars are gonna truly work is if every car is a self-driving car. Yes. My concern is self-driving cars and non self-driving cars co-existing together. Humans ruining it. Yeah, yeah. Yes, exactly, exactly. Maybe instead of a carpool lane they'll start giving us. An autonomous vehicle lane. [CROSSTALK] I think that's something that would have to happen Yeah, so instead of having the electric vehicle sticker that let's you cheat and get to the carpool lane. [UNKNOWN] Yeah. Have a little picture of a robot. A robot with a thumb's up. [CROSSTALK] I got this. [LAUGH] I got it everybody I'm a robot. I don't know, man, I kind of agree with you, but I hope I hope it happens. I fear that people will be just too kludgy /h about it and it won't- I think it'll happen eventually. I just don't know if it'll happen as soon as it really could happen. Well, it could happen right now. yeah, exactly, the technology exists. [UNKNOWN] [CROSSTALK] Yeah. It is. I mean there's still some. Usually they all work now on freeways. Yeah. It's kind of a little more sketchy on roads. Well did you guys talk about the story? We talked about this on the podcast but Google has a self driving car. The Google street map. Street. Street map. Street view. That's it. Yeah. The Google street view car got pulled over by a cop, because it was driving down a road but it was going too slow. Right. Which is also dangerous. But the cop pulled it over. Like the car knew it was getting pulled over Wow. It pulled itself over and the cops got there and it was like It talked itself out of a ticket. [LAUGH] [UNKNOWN], I'm sorry, officer. No, I guess there's actually instructions Officer, you look great today. Yeah. There's instructions where the officer, he had to call a certain number and explain to them that the car was driving It was driving like 25 in a 35 or something like that so it was holding up traffic. And then the Googlers. They're like do, do, do, do. And they like fixed whatever was bugging out. [CROSSTALK] It's like a direct line to Larry Page cause he always get's like part Google he's gotta accept the ticket on behalf of the car. Like who's the guy that accepts Traffic tickets on behalf of google, self driving cars. You get tickets for driving too slow, though? Yeah You do. Danger to traffic. Yeah, Got it. Got it. And Honestly Not that I ever would have done that. Yeah, I've never done that. But, I've seen people do that on the freeway. It makes me really mad. Yeah, Like, What are you doing? You actually can't go the speed limit right now. You can't do it. Yeah it's so weird. Well now they also have, we heard at CS they tested the first autonomous car in the snow where it can't see anything and they're literally using light to bounce off of snow banks and go much farther than So it's so much safer then humans, Yeah it really is. I agree. Although when I Had dinner with my aunt and uncle and they were telling me about getting the Tesla, they have a son, my cousin, who's 18. And he's at UCLA and he;s far to smart for his own good cuz he then got into a conversation about Well, if all the cars are autonomous. The only way for them to truly work together is to have a kind of a hive mind connected with each other. Yeah. But the problem with that, he then got into, is that TV were hacked. Right. Cuz you only have to hack one point, and then you can affect all the traffic. The network. So the entire Hour and a half long dinner with my cousin trying to figure out how to solve this problem. I was like [CROSSTALK] I have the nerdiest family Maybe he will. ever. I hope he does figure it out. I know, me too. I was, he's at UCLA for video game design but I'm like, obviously Brandon you could cure a lot more problems. [LAUGH] Please use this amazing brain in your head for other things. That's cool. Yeah. So video game design, that obviously means video games run in your family because you are a deep cuts gamer? I am. I'm pretty convinced that video games is why my brother and I didn't kill each other growing up. It was like You know, we have like a brother sister fight but then we would like actually sit down and play through four hours of Final Fantasy. [LAUGH] Like just check this out in Mortal Kombat. [LAUGH] Yeah, exactly. You're finishing a fight in Mortal Kombat. That's how they were excited that's official sibling fight decision, Mortal Kombat. [LAUGH] Exactly. So, you in terms of gaming, do you have an all time favorite game? An all time favorite. I mean, just for nostalgia sake, Mario Cart is something I always go back to. Yeah. Any version of Mario Cart I will go play. There's just something about it, where I also love the fact you play through a game in a couple minutes. Yeah. You're not like committing you life. Right. Yeah. You're whole weekend playing Mario Cart. There's always time for a match. And that's a great sibling rivalry settler. Yep. Yeah. Totally. But I would say, when people ask what kind of games I play, my most perfect example is Portal. Portal and Portal 2. Those are like my go to kind of games. Like puzzle games that have a story line. Yeah. That sort of thing is my jam. Well, Witness just came out. Are you excited about that? That's the new puzzle game from Jonathan Blow. Its all like mazy. I'll have to look it up. Yeah, it's pretty cool I saw it yesterday. Yeah. Awesome. I've heard good things. I have plans to buy it but I haven't gotten it yet. Good stuff. Really good stuff. So this year is going to be, last year we talked about this on our [UNKNOWN] show. It's kind of an embarrassment of [UNKNOWN] gaming. It was all sequels. But this year there's a lot of original stuff coming out. Yes, thank goodness. And I'm curious as to what your most anticipated games are for this year? I just made fun of it all being sequels, but quite honestly the game I cannot wait for is Uncharted 4. Yeah. [LAUGH] I hate sequels but the fourth installment of this game. I know, wait, if you give me Portal 3. I'm gonna play it. Do you think they're gonna, I want corners to me. That fun luggage moving game. You take luggage to people's room, it's like paper, it's from the makers of paper slave. Porter Police. I'm also excited for Uncharted Four it's going to be so good, right? So I was not a PlayStation person, I was always Xbox and then I was given a Playstation and all three Uncharted games, That's a nice gift. That'll do it, that'll convert you. I know. It was, yeah it was great. And so like one day I finally sat down and I started playing and I was like, why were these not in my life earlier? And it's still the only games I play on PlayStation. Yeah. Mm-hm. And so I don't have a PS4 yet but I will be getting one [LAUGH] as soon as Uncharted 4 comes out. Well you have a nice special edition one, maybe they'll make a great one. Yes. Are you excited for VR, or have you tried it? Yes. I'm on the fence about VR. I think it is a really cool technology and I actually did Morpheus down at San Diego Comic-Con. Mmhmm. And I did both the one where you can shoot out of, you were like The heist? In a car chase, yes. But then there was another one where you could go and steal a diamond and people start shooting at you and you have to shoot yourself out of the room. Yeah. And so I was doing that one and you get the diamond and then There's a second floor where people starting shoot at you from. So you can duck behind the desk you're behind. And I'm like, yeah. I'm sneaking out and I'm shooting at guys. And then I went to stand up. And I went to put my hand on the desk. No! Not really there. To lift myself up So I just went Hooah. [LAUGH] And the guy doing the demo caught me and I was like my gosh there's no desk. [LAUGH] And he's like people do it all the time. But that to me is a concern. Yeah. How many people are going to hurt themselves when they have this VR in their own house? Me. Desks are the biggest problem for hurting yourselves. Truly. Yes, a real hurdle. Desks. Lack of things to lift yourself up with. It seems like it could be a problem. [LAUGH] And I also don't know if that it's really awesome playing the VR game for five ten minutes. But I don't think I could sit there and play it for hours like I will play other games. Yeah, we talked about this a lot. About like long term gaming. Like it just feels like I don't know that I could handle more than maybe like an hour at the most. They get heavy too. Yeah, they do. I don't know you were talking about how Mario Kart is a fun short experience, it's cool, like maybe break up other games with my VR experiences and have shorter games. Yeah. I don't know, I'm very excited. I just think it's going to be one of those things that it's just touch and go and then It will get really good. A couple years down the line. Yeah. It'll be awesome.>> And that is when you'll buy Portal 3. Exactly. For VR. Look I'm the person who when Apple first came out with the iPad I'm like why would I need that? I have a phone, I Have a laptop. Right. I don't need the thing in between. NOw I can't imagine my life without The iPad, so. Technology can do that, though. We discuss this a lot and this is a thing we say all the time. VR, it's amazing how there is no official VR headset available commercially at this point. Like a high end one. You have cardboard and [UNKNOWN] they're powered by smart phones There's nothing that is an actual VR headset that you plug into your computer available commercially. And yet, the market is already so crowded. Yeah. It's amazing. Okay, so that is all the time we have. I just have to rap. You've just got the rap, I just have Wrap it up! Wrap it up. Welcome, welcome everybody to Back it or Hack it. [MUSIC] Do you like bonsai? I do, I've never owned a bonsai tree but my love of the Karate Kid series makes me love bonsai. Do you like things that levitate? Yeah who doesn't like levitation? OKay I'm gonna tell you then about Air Bonsi which I think you might like. Look at that! That doesn't seen real. It is real. It's totally real. This is a crowdfund happening right now on Kickstarter. It looks amazing and cool, and I want it. It just looks so awesome. It does look awesome. This is exactly what the name says, it's Air Bonsai. It's a levitating plant. That you can have in your home. So, the way this works is there are a series of magnets in the base unit. And then there's a sponge in the center of the plant part. They call it a little star, it's that where the- It's like a green kinda mossy thing. And that's so you can have a starter plant which is the little star. They also have other options for plants. So they have ippon matsu which is five years old. They have shin pacu which is a 25 year old bonsai. I mean, you can have all kinds of Different Kutomatzu. Like there's all kinds of different plants, little bonsai trees that you could have. All right. The little star. You can actually like plant your own from a little seedling and then watch it grow which is pretty neat. But yeah, so it's magnet powered, and what you do is the little star is a ball about six centimeters in diameter, and there's a sponge in there. You can plant all your stuff, use moss. Yeah. It's really cool, and you gotta water it every now and again but that has either one or a few magnets in it and then the base is called the energy base, that's what they call it. Energy base. And they say it's about 15 centimeters wide Wide. But it's not huge. Yeah. And then you plug it in. You plug that in. And when you turn it on, it has it's powered by a built in magnet. Sop it rotates. SO the power rotates. reminds me of the floating rocks in Avatar. yes. Also signficant. Totally on trend. Very timely. Yes. You want one of these? I super into this. It would be a conversation piece. It would definitely be a conversation piece, but I do worry about, I worry about the price a little bit. So I was looking at the different levels that you could access that and the [UNKNOWN] is the basic set. Starts a little star and an energy base, and then you get a cushion, a [UNKNOWN] Box and the AC adapter is $200. That's a good price. It's a little pricey. It's cool. Wouldn't it be cool if If as inevitably what would happen with me is that it would slowly die cuz I'd forget to water it. If it levitated slightly less. [LAUGH] Well yeah. Slowly sank. Inching down as it died. That would be very sad. And then this goes all the way up to you can get an air bonsai that is At a little star that is entirely hand-made and energy based that's hand-made. And we get these like super customized ones that are $1,000. Those are already all gone, so sorry guys. $800, those are all gone. This is definitely something that you would see in the SkyMall catalog on the plane. It is. That doesn't exist anymore so now we have Kickstarter. Now we have Kickstarter, that's what it's for. So I'm super into this. I say if you have the funds and you are feeling a little. Frivolous with your cash and you want something cool, you should back this cuz it's really awesome and you get it by supposedly August of this year They're making tons of money already on this thing, people are into it. Yeah, they asked for $80,000 and they have 33 days left in the campaign, which seems like okay maybe they're at $100,000? No they're at $430,000. Yeah. They have a lot of floating bonsais to make. [LAUGH] That's a lot of floating bonsais. >. Lot of floating trees. Yeah. Very cool though. Yeah, really neat, it's called air bonsai it's over on Kickstarter go and check it out. I'm sure I would kill it. Probably. So last week, by the way, we talked about Life Prints, and we got a hey TD about that. Yeah, Life Print was the printable photo that you look at through your phone, and that will actually show videos. Augmented reality. Yeah. Kind of neat. Dustin wrote in and said wow that is cool, I really see it being the next level advancement for business cards and advertisement. Yeah. I agree. I think business cards. That's like number one. For sure. Yeah, you should see a picture of something, and if you want all the info just look at it through your phone. It's kinda neat. If I was an editor, a video editor. Wow, yes. You could have your demo reel. That would be my [UNKNOWN] card. Have your demo reel right on the card. Wow. It'd be amazing. Very cool. That's what I would do. So are you ready to talk about what you are into this week? Let's do it. Alright. Let's into it. [MUSIC] My into it this week is on Netflix and it's something, if you have 15 minutes, you should watch it. It's only, it's a little over 15 minutes long, it's like 16 minutes, something like that. That's cutting it too close. I know. This is totally worth your time. It's an animated short from a brilliant animator named Don Hertzfeld, it's called World of Tomorrow. If you heard the name Don Hertzfeldt before. He's been around for a few years now making an incredible animated shorts. Two times, I believe he's been nominated for Academy Award for Best Animated Short. Tons of awards he's earned. I think justifiably, some of work is absolutely incredible. World of Tomorrow blew me away This is, I don't want to spoil anything about it. No, don't spoil anything. But i, the idea is it's very much about future tech, it has incredibly huge concepts in it. .>> Okay. It has, it's thinking about, it'll make you thing about where we're headed with technology. It is sad and meloncholy and hopeful at the same time. Which seems like an impossible thing to do, but he pulls it off. I love his, it's very simplistic like stick figure art that he's used throughout his career. I urge you to watch this. If you have Netflix, check out World of Tomorrow by Don Hertzfeldt. It's phenomenal, phenomenal. I'm gonna add it to my queue today. You are going to love it. Well you said melancholy but also hopeful. I love that, that's a great That's right up my alley. SO this week I am in to something that. This got sent to us by like five people. Specifically. yeah. I'm sure because they know I am obsessed with BB 8. Apparently this week, a very enterprising young fellow took it upon himself to hand make his very own life size BB 8. That cost $120. Well, that's pretty inexpensive for a life size BB8. Look at how amazing that look. Does it work? It fully works. This is pretty incredible. So this guy, I wanna say his name cuz I wanna make sure that I say it and give him credit. His name, Angelo Casimiro, 17 years old, engineer. Wow Made this with his dad, his dad built this step by step, there he is. Documented the entire thing, this is a 20 minute long DIY video. You can learn how to make this DB8 on Wow. For $120 that doesn't seem possible. For a hundred and Paper machete shelf. Okay. So he used paper machete around a beach ball. So he used a beach ball to do paper machete. Yeah. And then the top was a carved out styrofoam head. And then magnets connected everything. And he uses Arduino. Arduino. Arduino. Did she, did she model this after the little toy that you can buy, the Sphero? If i had to guess I would imagine so. I mean cuz that's how you would get it to kind of work properly. I guess or maybe he figured it our for himself, like a new solution. Well, there's a bunch of tear downs and stuff of the actual. That's true. The Sphero BB8 and the funny thing was is so he really wanted one. And he was like gosh, like a $150 is a lot of money for me, and 120. It's also small. So the [INAUDIBLE] so small. Yeah, yeah. So he was like, how can I, maybe I can build one. So then he came up with this This idea, and this is my favorite thing. You already lost me on paper mache. I was never good at paper mache. Come on. Paper mache is so easy. Is it? It's just glue and paper. It's all over the place. The water, you just do the thing. And then he sands it and he paints it. Lumps on everything and now I'm all messed up and let me just go kill a bonsai tree while I'm at it. Yeah, no. See, this show should also be subtitled saying or things Jeff can't do. Things I can't do. That's why I'm in technology is cuz the Do it for you. The virtual world can do it. You need a robot who can do paper mache. There we go. Guys. Build a robot, I can do papier-mache, and then send it to us. I want a robot, I want a BB-8 building robot. Yeah it could just build you a BB-8, okay great. Very good.
