5G's not just for phones - Cars, robots, even doctors have big change ahead (The Daily Charge, 7/30/2019)

Today on the daily charge, Capital One declares a major data breach, more leaks around the Pixel 4 and 5G it's not just for your phone. [MUSIC] Good morning and And welcome to CNET's Daily Charge. Tuesday, July 30th. I'm Joan E. Solsman. I'm Shara Tibken. I'm Albert Ng. Let's take a look at today's headlines. [MUSIC] Credit card company Capital One has been hit by a major data breach. Last night the company and the FBI said 100 million credit card applications were affected. In fact, your information could be involved if you simply applied for a Capital One credit card, going all the way back to 2005. Stolen data included some very sensitive stuff, 140,000 Social Security numbers and 80,000 bank account numbers. Albert, how does this breach compare to some of the other ones that we've seen? Recently Yeah, this breach is still pretty massive. There's a lot of sensitive data here, along with the social security card and the bank account numbers, up to a million Canadians were affected by this, their equivalent of social security numbers. And they also stole a lot of sensitive data, including things like your address, your birthday, your email address. Right. Things that a lot of hackers can use to basically steal your identity. Right, now there's been some more news about this this morning. What happened today? Yeah, so the New York Attorney General, Letitia James, announced that she was opening an investigation on Capital One. She was also the Attorney General that led the coalition of like 49 other Attorney General's in the settlement against Equifax. Right. This is a breach like nearly on the level of Equifax not as much data had leaked, but you know, the potential. To steal identity is definitely on that level- Because of the sensitive kind of information they got, right? Now, Equipfax, earlier this week, there was just a settlement in that case, what was that? [LAUGH] Yeah, I mean [UNKNOWN] $125 if you want to or you can get ten years of free credit monitoring To be fair, Capital one is also offering free credit monitoring if you are affected by this breach. Right. So take the money. Yeah. [LAUGH] Next up another leak about Google's pixel for a phone and again, it's from a highly reliable source Google itself, Google last month self with the picture of the pixel for and they were added again yesterday dropping a new video. One of the biggest things we learned in addition to facial recognition pixel for will sense motion and hand gestures sharp, you've covered phones forever. Why is Google, nobody else does this, why is Google keep self-leaking all this stuff? Well, I mean the self-leaking it is pretty smart that they do that because I think it's getting really hard to keep any sort of secrets in the tech industry. I mean, when a new iPhone comes out we know almost everything about it before it actually launches. So instead of letting you know leakers and tech blogs break this news, they're leaking it themselves. So it's kind of keeping the interest as you go along. You know, before this actually comes out, people are talking about But it's kind of just making buzz until it actually launches. Well what about this gesture and hand recognition thing, do you think that's just a gimmick? Do you think it could be really interesting? I don't know, I think everybody has tried it, really. I rememebr Samsung has had things like this in the past. toher peole have been working on it. I don't remember where the phone was, was it a Motorola something? LG, I think it was LG. Where you had to use these weird gestures to try to do things, and they typically don't work very well, so we'll have to see if Google's figured that out and made it so it's actually useful gestures as opposed to something that you're never going to actually use. So the Pixel 4 I believe it's due in October. Right? Yeah. What else do we know about the phone that makes it interesting? Yeah, I mean one of the things that we see from Pixels is the camera. The low light mode is amazing. I think the reviewers typically say that it's better than what you find in like an iPhone. So for Google, this is gonna be coming a month after the next iPhone. For them, putting out some of this stuff now, they are trying to get ahead of the Iphone. Finally, today's main story. The hype around five g is huge, but when we talk about it, it is mostly a discussion around how fast five g will make your phone. But five g could radically change other huge aspects of your life How you drive, what it's like to go shopping even your visits to your doctor. Sure. So as you were reporting the story, what were some of the most unexpected things that you found 5G could change going forward? Yeah, I mean, it's funny. You could basically pick any industry and there's potential for 5G to change it. The biggest benefits that 5g has is the speed. But I mean, you can get speed from Wi Fi and some things. And so it seems like for a lot of industries, the kind of huge game changer is the latency. So like if you're a robot and a factory, you can't have any leg if you're building a car or you know, doing remote surgery or something like that. You can't have any sort of delays from You know in the internet connection from what it's telling you to do to you actually carrying out that task. So that's why most things are wired right now. And once you get to 5g, you can actually disconnect. You can have things wireless. So a lot of companies are looking at doing this in their factories There's other things that aren't necessarily so dramatic. That I think are just really interesting. Things that would let you live in your home longer if you're elderly or if you're sick. So instead of being in the hospital, you can constantly being monitored by machines. Your doctor can stop in at any time. You instead could stay at home Your doctor could, you know take your I don't know there's like stroke detection or ultrasounds or things like that that can, they can cause they can instantly see the data as it's coming. So then instead of you having to live in a hospital long term or a nursing home or whatever you can be in your home. Or for people who are taking care of their parents, their elderly parents, being able to be connected. And some of those things, it may not be so earth-shattering, but it could really change our lives and really Really make life better? Yeah. You know, some of these things. It could be farther out. You know, 5g is going to take a while to roll out. Yeah. So it seems like you know with 5g, when it first comes, it's going to be you know, besides the phone, it'll be Augmented reality sort of applications gaming. We've seen everybody talk about cloud gaming services like Google, Microsoft, Apple even. And this could, let you play multiplayer games, on your phone or, a specialized gaming device. With no lag and you know, be super responsive, so, you know, that's kind of one of the really, some of the things we'll see. What about what about a part of your daily life like your car? Yeah, your car. You know, I think when people think of 5g, they think Great. This is going to help with self driving cars. That's not really gonna be the case, 5G is really short range. Especially the super super fast 5G, so to get the kind of blanket coverage that you'd need to be able to rely on 5G. Mm-hm. To drive your car is going to take a very long time, if ever, but it's some of those things, you know it for self driving cars that could kind of supplement. It could also just really change the infotainment sort of situation where you could be watching live TV from the backseat or you know, I've seen some demos where it could. You now have cameras and help you detect if there's a pedestrian coming or you know another big thing is cars talking to other cars. So once like cars are connected your car up, you know kind of like ways but more advanced. We would know that hey there's a car that's going to be Coming over the blind corner whatever, I should slow it down. Or when if like traffic lights are connected it could say, if you go 25 miles per hour, your gonna hit every green light. Mm. Things like that to jsut kind of like speed up, all this promise we've heard of smart cities and things like that could become more realistic When 5G's rolled out, but again these are not gonna be next year.
