Car Tech Live 231: TomTom gets appy

Auto Tech
TomTom embraces apps the ultimate driving machine drives itself an electric cars at thunderbird ring record. And we make fun of a Ferrari 456 Italian. I'm Wayne Cunningham here -- plugged into an in the studio this is cnet's car tech live for Thursday the first of September 2011. Frankly is on the road this weekend that the -- -- road next week to and in fact the week after that we'll all be on the road Frankfurt Auto Show. Will do a special next week on the Frankfurt Auto Show we're holding back a lot of preview. Information about that lot of cool cars coming up though. But this week we got news that TomTom actually -- news that that TomTom is shipping a new. -- problem portable navigation device and trying to stay relevant. Yes so it it's funny because that it will basically what they've done is what everyone else is doing is we get apps now. Attend the big new thing it today everywhere and if doing something that has apps and -- -- -- new 1535. Go lie if and that's basically gonna be that the smaller version of the the 2535. -- -- that we've already reviewed. -- it's gonna come. With the TomTom live service but as part of that now you -- apps. Or as I like to call them their religious services and that really -- to install and you can install more but -- you get is you -- you open -- -- I Yelp is sort of the user generated. Review site for the for businesses are you -- you trip advisor integration. Which is also review site but with more of I'm out of town on Monday kitchen I'm new in this in the city sort of spin. But it's also user reviews. There's also Expedia in accretion which is extremely interesting because not only do you get user reviews. And I guess hotel ratings on that one to four star. Scale you also because you're connected you can see how much the -- gonna -- -- and you can also see if there's a room available. -- -- and you can push a button and with a Bluetooth hands free calling call the hotel and -- actually in just the like -- -- last week I -- down -- for the for the the Camry unveiling I could have if I had this device -- My hotel room which had neglect to do ahead of time a packet of book that from the road. Right. Com -- with the -- customize what what. Kind of connection and use out of it it has its own cellular. A connection with its own sim card that it in incited it needed to basically I think the PP back on AT&T'S network. -- is as long user within some sort of GSM coverage should be cryptic that's related data connected device that. -- it's been -- uses that same connection for the HD traffic. That Google Maps search on the -- and there's a fourth app that I forgot to mention the fossil -- Twitter integration with everything gonna have Twitter integration instead of having you reach openly pungent -- on the touch screen. It's integrated into the trip planning functions -- when you set off to navigate on that -- screen where you click go. You can also click tweaked and what -- do is it will send off a He can't -- like I will be arriving at work in two hours. That's cool so I can tell your friends an idea -- -- long -- when you'll be somewhere and of the world at large and that -- -- -- -- -- -- -- traffic. And and it's gonna take -- longer in -- estimated time rebel changes it'll automatically tweet -- update quote and then when you get where you're going you can also check -- governor out of royalties be costly tweeting that costs 35 minutes more to get to -- on the necklacing substantially better at. Community driven in the room and a ticket to mean it seems in theory He wouldn't -- -- don't think but if suddenly there's now an accident on the route and the and now -- there's no wait its gonna take an additional thirty minutes to get where you go and then you'd probably get it when does a Sacramento. It should be out in the end of this month maybe early Falco also -- get a chance to review that yet and then also doesn't have the 2535. Later on this year in the and and -- fall that should actually get a firmware update you'll be left out -- detracts. Excellent at what what's the total customs scan -- 209 -- dollars -- combat. What you believe with the apps on an obviously some of this. Is similar services Leo and yourself on my Treo Smartphone you've got these apps do probably but having -- in this -- formats like in -- -- -- windshield as it is a more. Convenient I'm sure they have -- set up to be used on -- ago. Yeah I mean some people just like to have a standalone navigation device it is it is good to have out of out of and then. Like -- navigation and standalone navigation Sabbath and they're still are advantages financial advantages is -- one of them. But there are still advantages to having it stand -- device I think some people can. -- appreciate. My next story on moving on this is actually a little bit of Frankfurt on -- teased as is something we'll see there it's a new concept. From Ford it's called the -- The Ford. And this guy is a actually Ford isn't really doing this they -- a prelude to want my you to pay attention -- the car itself so much because they say that. You'll never see this car driving on the road which -- -- -- to that -- I think it's a pretty. Good looking He really good looking car ads for did you do is certainly that you would it be viewed as go to the -- -- plugging in dig down a little bit deeper into the flight ship. The pictures of this card just make it look so it's like a mustang. And it's when He school Taurus had a child at that and -- an Aston Martin cannon ball at a it's just beautiful. -- it is cool it has become -- small to use so should be nice and maneuverable. -- but they're really using the -- sort of a way of demonstrating all of their. They're they're new technologies. So this not only hits designed some of the design elements are set the world DC and future. Ford cars. Also the engine it's a hybrid power train plug in hybrid power train that they're going to use in the USC next energy -- -- which comes out next year. And and it also has a number of cabin tech technology users attempting knowledge in this is where they get really. -- -- out that they talk about how this car. Well Leo I talk about individual features they wanna talk about how it'll fit into your life and one idea is that. You will be connected to the cloud so relaxing -- your calendar. And the idea is that the car will know when you when you. And it'll know like when you go to work every day for example so. You know on Monday morning -- -- -- 8 AM or whatever rules are warming up and getting ready because normally will be there in two minutes to jump in and drive up to work. And it'll also do things like it'll it'll know your calendars there's an appointment it'll have an address and all ethnic and -- load that in the navigation system. And have the -- and awaiting ready to go to your your next appointment and if somebody actually capsules that employment say while you're asleep. And ideas they can even light. Say oh you're not gonna -- -- -- so we're gonna change your alarm setting and you don't have to get up and for another hour listening to your house to get ideas and some lights and -- a holistic thing where it's connected also to devices in your house as well and you know maybe it'll run out and get the animal animal goes sour in the refrigerator. That attempted. I think it's a means that they get at the same time every -- every now and then -- schedule -- super early -- meeting and on the east kind of been. Now is intimately in and jumping up and having to do it in mad at him as. At that it's floating -- phones make that possible apparently you have in the cart waiting -- unit to handle all that now obviously it's a pretty. -- expansive vision of having this thing connected -- your house and you know electronics and that part and and they're in their return from the -- a little bit but there's kind of a lot of cool things -- him. Inherently a lot of the some of the things are. Already starting to happen the united automated like beings because the plug in hybrid like pre warming up the vehicle is something that you can do it now. With the Nissan leaf. You just have to go into the -- at 8 o'clock start warming yourself up it doesn't do it automatically. This tie into the calendar is -- a cool initially a little bit believable. Yes -- reacted to conduct -- that you know some sort of business electronics in there. And they also talk about things like say your watch here you're listening to some music in your house. And dad and then you wanted the -- -- -- jump on the card can actually pick up that song from where you left off for. And Millicent you know NPR or something like that in an interview can -- pause and then picked up in the car. I'll get another picture here of it though and this is got a one of the more wild things they got going on is these multiple -- wing doors. Yeah it's. Attends a pain and -- that's definitely. Concept Erica. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- This is not and I mean they not only have the front doors open -- going stylus on the rear doors open going style and it was losing some in the inner Freeman has yet. Yet -- its crazy how much is exposed here in this is an actual concept cars I think these really do that. But it's not like they're gonna incorporate this on any future cars and click click the driver seats rated colorized the seats agree -- -- -- -- for it yeah -- -- -- they gonna call it out like you -- Because and yet and I was -- the -- that the the quality that a good mind and that's that's the listener is -- -- -- -- in the receipt and the reason that you -- if you talk. I edited it almost seems like they're the agreements are for a future release stupid population was amazed on the car like one of the keys in my hands almost the driver which you -- -- the -- one yelled at an incident like that. They wanted to make sure the European news confused. Or hear audio left -- -- yesterday Canada and -- that -- -- -- steering wheel and reviews and He indicated -- goodness. Since then they do this for the British yeah except that it. If they're one of the handheld entry system prevalent that alert at British Australia and Japan plan. The the media and -- -- a supplement. In the -- that a business units in -- east Asian countries those -- the main ones. Com. We also you a look at the some pictures of the new -- to -- S this the -- -- two is due for an update. Because I think -- is trying to unify their design language right now you get the Genesis sedan it looks one way. Yet with -- panel at the sedan and the Genesis coupe looks but if they look unlike its own thing and then you've got the -- -- Accidents last lost yet it's less the last aerial untrue there weird looks and now looks like the Genesis coupe. I was gonna get an update for Frankfurt and we have a preview image that looks like someone in lake Wendy's factory street in Korea taken posted to and Hyundai enthusiast site. Call Jane -- dot com. -- it basically looks like they've taken the news off of the -- their science and re shaped to fit onto the front of the Genesis but it's. As it is. Avenue. There and he's calling it like catfish like -- it is and it's less busy even though -- -- and give it that much. You know like the design it looks like something that today let's say you -- update for the that Genesis -- But you know that that the secret that grows -- pretty -- -- the new Ford. Sitting. Yeah a lot of people and I went live tweeting about this post in house thinking it and enhance peace -- the -- this thing but a couple of people said -- the eleven between twelve Taurus and there. And I'm like Clinton that the only one who is -- system to its notoriously open. But they're they're cheap in this kind of quiet that they really set anything else about -- department. No will mean that ensure that the three when He leader. The V6 we'll get refreshed and -- -- -- mean that it needs more power they want to compete with the mustang. But then I'm secretly hoping that the -- As if it's an engine of its own boom -- liter V8 wreck and I'm hoping -- relieved that. It's when He thirteen Genesis coupe arsenic maybe you also get the steam engine so it can compete with. The four mustang -- went out. Yet that and would be -- that be an impressive engine and a cartons that He had -- in the well. Boards out five point -- and -- the -- -- -- -- one in the DT I'm only now. Yes -- -- popped. A five liter V8 -- -- Genesis -- should it yet. If they don't do it somebody -- but just at least until a couple of -- -- -- -- and other traction control programming each I think because that want to step on you every time you tried to do anything that. And with that with that amount apart from that engine but boy. That would be fun. We just got another little other item -- news from Hyundai -- they announced the pricing for there those now coming Gloucester. And this -- them. A car that we've -- been kind of anticipating excitedly -- it's a very cool looking little sports car -- although you're. Not crazy -- it can be found at its Britain basically the same as the as -- Going back and forth on it burka is. Well at first I thought it was smaller in the action in a looked at the specs and turns out it's actually no longer a -- -- longer wider shorter. But it's got the -- like one point six liter engine insert its gonna have a sporting you're tuned to the suspension. But -- -- my mind I'm thinking oh it's an accident with one your door the pricing comes out for this car and it starts at 1860. That's a lot more than -- -- -- two grand -- in the accident of the fully loaded. You're paying more for less stores. -- April more for -- -- doors. There was a little bit of sticker shock -- at the time on Google plus complaining about it. -- -- start thinking about what you get with the with the of the bluster and this is gonna be the first car that it debuts a blue link. Which is Apple undies on -- sort of risk tellem magic system. -- so it's gonna come with the first tier of that W tuchman on previous. -- with the standard. You'll see a bigger wheels. There's gonna be a more aggressive -- on the suspension and so make you know -- be. -- -- it's worth the extra bucks. I XE a sports car 181000 and -- -- pretty -- for. A pretty good sports car in this really delivers a hard time calling it a sports car at the front wheel drive and 130 works -- -- you know but -- sporty. Well yet and of course -- a little low. For this kind of thing I -- billion U look at vote VW DT as elected. To the -- -- There yesterday -- Leicester North Korea leads me to my next point. There's actually a rumored. And there's it's rumored that sometime next year and he's -- enough to Turbo charged version of car -- -- at 200 horsepower. And that will put it in direct competition with those very same cars and the -- side. And the -- clean -- yet but we -- are starting at eighteen grand. That that your role model in -- it's gonna have to start twenty. And it isn't. The -- starts at around twenty. And -- So subtly ending I think they -- officially ended -- typically -- they've -- The capitalizing on their values and I wonder if they're just like you know what we make -- cars now we can target underserved need that their mind. -- the sales are looking -- when it's -- get away with at this point at some point. I'm sure they do you have to start thinking like okay we can increase our revenues a bit in increase the prices. The other in a car reserve -- is get every bit as good as the Toyota isn't and Hondas now they descent to a you -- -- that that impression in in the minds of consumers which is only just starting to happen and so talked to plenty of people that. In other external -- -- -- car should and you say in their -- with. What kind of Toyota issued session yet and you're telling them hunt is really it should look at that about Aetna Aetna -- -- -- -- When they would people say that -- even just by the coral and stop asking if I edit with you'll immediately tell you -- teach it with you arguing here and and just tell me which are you a meter recommended -- it and enamel when I mean literally it. But here's a car you don't actually have to drive or. I mean it's that BMW's actually testing now autonomous car technology. They've been testing -- BMW five series with. -- would it with his economists are to dollars -- this car can drive itself and I believe they they did some fairly likely drive within Germany. What in this terrorist on the Audubon. Apparently could handle. Traffic -- panel passing other cars in and you know they said it maximum speeds of eighty miles per hour. But He can do -- -- up at seven miles per hour and get a picture this guide to sit in the tech -- forces you know go and am in good freeware that are in you know and Audubon with its hands off the wheel when -- -- -- -- She's -- should be doing something that episode I cards are freely are neatly into the group wise in Britain and espresso -- her need years to us via years. And I guess that's pretty early technology so maybe he's a little bit word about the -- it's. Video plane right now about it actually. Done similar things to this this is this is sort of the the current level they're sounded a previously they -- a car called the BMW -- trainer that was designed to a -- -- mostly go around -- track. Laguna Sega I think it is and be infinitely the only trick here put it. And the magnetic that's. -- -- -- -- -- -- But yet follows united programmed drivers you know did Apple pass subscriber lines into -- -- -- all the corners appropriately and apparently it is whipped around that track is like some serious speed. But so that that was I was treated initially and and they develop some other things and and S and -- -- autonomous BMW five series. They're really working up to the same technology that Google's been testing and others some other companies -- Working on this kind of stuff so. I'm kind of thinking that and we should see. You know real autonomous cars in the not too distant future I think you know within our lifetime certainly that. -- you jump on the freeway and just set it on auto pilot and or let it take you to annoy or wherever. And -- Oliver personally be using its technology -- but I can think of at least six people minded who would recommend it to -- If I and listen to driving in the first place -- union -- for people still aren't paying. Well that could be a thing we can have like. Graduated driving like driving licenses -- -- like the minimal driving licence and in you can sit in it and and an economist at the equivalent of -- you -- -- in your own personal. -- And then you know for. You take further tests and get a more advance from in my sunscreen actually. Drive the car Selig if you're gonna -- usenet and has to be able to -- to -- that at. -- essential -- another license. -- to be in -- benefited. There are racing audio licensing Gonzales says it should be able to go as fast as you want you pulled -- -- just like flash and you'll like purple Carter whatever color it is. -- -- Area and -- the urgency on they have some scanner and their place conferences. In RFID chip on the right now yeah like as a it is one by the 150 miles an hour but that's a missiles reverend a close court. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Talk about past driving we've got to story about Toyota fastest growth. A record at the Herbert -- Put it does not a -- you expect to be breaking records on the never -- But they did it -- electric car which fits into even -- even more something you wouldn't expect look like a -- increased at a -- it adds that it's far from obvious it's a purpose built race car. But it is powered He did that -- electric -- into electric data motors. The sector comes out of that put a motor sports in Europe it's so -- other divisions. That really works on race cars and and that sort of thing and so. Some of this technology should durable into you put in a large and the whole point of testing this kind of -- out. But -- -- -- to actually set a that the record for this -- around the -- George -- Section of -- and never bring. Was. Those that seven minutes 47 point 79 seconds that's over twelve point nine mile lap. And dad that the fast as gasoline engine and engine -- did it in a minute faster six minutes 48 seconds. So that's actually pretty good I think because a lot of gasoline -- cars and then tackle -- never -- yet and only a handful electric cars so that the fact that you know one of them came within a minute. This gasoline engine -- it is pretty impressive. And anything the advantages of of electric car -- you only need to have a thirteen mile range. It is like eighteen officer -- This section nor -- is when He point eight kilometers which. Four point nine miles. About how it is and enters -- But generally view view only need to have. In of that that the -- not a hundred dollar range but yet maybe give it twenty memories. You get the instant on network the an electric motor -- you don't have a curve to your selection becomes less of an issue. And then you can also yeah I -- more efficiently package to vehicle where you get the center of gravity you put the week where you need to be. That's right -- the electric gather batteries that power this thing are they -- substantially the car itself weighs -- 2100 pounds. 770 pounds of that is the battery. -- -- the battery. And you think about what is it lake civic hybrid battery pack news. Where 150 pounds maybe if -- -- and it -- the the of the Kia optima hybrid -- in 97 pound battery pack so that's a lot more battery Wii board's use. Yet -- -- to spit out -- 4041 point five kilowatt hours that takes the current 62 miles per hour in three point nine seconds. Fast three units and -- horsepower Porter and ninety pound feet of torque from two electric motors in the scar. I would got a video opportunity expressed. His patio. And around the image if you -- that. They. -- can actually -- When you Nielsen audio on this video they did a really good job of -- The wind noise out. So mostly what you're hearing is just like electric motor or anything near the tires tennis teetering on the pavement which wouldn't normally -- with a gas engine Eric. Yeah it's just so -- -- felt like. That that that that be a really good wheeled vehicle eventually did so pleased that. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- you really hear those those motors -- -- -- -- wind up like turbines with the kind of provides sound. -- -- As video is just so quite -- if you ever played that renters founder and never bring in -- -- -- You could easily recognize all of this here. If they did a really good job on under Internet -- video. And it didn't you know -- the audio. Really clean suits in the register the car and the that the tires and optimist when militants. -- -- -- -- -- It I'm looking forward to that idea and -- at some of those electric race cars in. -- we got another story this week more future tech at the stuff this is a this story is a little bit originated. -- I don't entirely understand there's some -- company is planning on. Building India. Nuclear powered car using like for -- lasers. Sounds like. You're starting to sell more morally -- At a -- welcome the idea here is that AM the use Tory am and just. Apparently -- Did the story tigers and indeed -- on the -- apparently just but is it just like ram -- historian has the same energy is. Owns and downs of gasoline. And the have this idea that they can like just one little -- himself on the market power for 5000 models. It. I mean. The eight grams of Tory -- In basically power and of his car for a 5000 hours or 300000. Miles of normal pregnant eight grams. And this mildly radio active material. Yet it's an impressive idea. Apparently M Cadillac did showed off they. Something that apparently get content car in 2009 at Chicago Auto Show that used this. This type of power train and it's you know its complexity to nuclear basically consortium with. He Tivoli users to me like that. You know this and complexities -- I'll let let's let's read the the super complex accelerator in excel with it yeah accelerator driven rammed -- laser. Yeah its -- going on there. Currently there does not create and produce a beam of coherent light like conventional lasers but instead heats up in gives off energy -- I don't even -- It's don't know. But it's pretty amazing idea of -- -- that you would buy it never have to go up at all that. They were just run for its 300000 miles and down by that time brought -- -- get a new cut that time. -- -- easily won a new car of course have yet to worry about radiation leakage through the firewall or something that might be a problem. But if all of that the pine disguised its nuclear. Lasers. -- lasts forever. That's immune to do is release -- Something I mean this is the engine that's in the Starship Enterprise visit Internet access if they fill it -- mean the -- lithium crystals lamented that as a the first cars to come out on -- the elected the -- and it has an -- this guy Charles Stephens who -- in Massachusetts has this company of laser power systems. Is really pushing this and wants to get it -- program content. Asked I don't see come -- anytime soon eight -- I'm not. -- out of idle and completely object to the idea of nuclear powered cars. It's -- An unknown and I'm a little confused by it a little afraid and I just a canard here the comments of light. What happens -- you into an accident earlier in your neighborhood and Chernobyl. What happens when you decide to change the way William popped the hood vendors Adrian says that -- and -- used oil. With unicorn -- -- with whatever -- Linear Sony's gonna try to -- To be fun of what about a perfectly logical use lasers -- Yeah BMW actually announced today that they are working on something that. Is it's pretty advanced and and really cool idea is they're talking about. Well we've already done LEDs for headlights -- they -- too many people coming up they just started to. There's -- must take the next step multi use lasers for its. -- is really Nero. Well its a act removed all -- -- means that its -- parent being light each each flight at each. Under the lights on seemingly blank. And there's a lot of advantages that they point out you're using. Laser beams -- headlights. One is that they AM use a lot less energy these about half the energy of LEDs and only -- super efficient as that -- -- you already use. Yes so I mean lasers it's amazing if they even -- that -- half. In other draw and they're looking at this -- electric cars so if you use this as an electric car headlights it's not gonna -- much energy when you're driving at night. Another thing to his -- tiny they're they're less than that -- hundredth the size that each diet is -- hundredth the size of an LED. That's used that are currently used in headlights. So you wouldn't need like many of the -- I -- image to produce the same amount of light now BMW says -- we're we're gonna keep we -- -- keep our you know light lighting services headlights or does the same size we don't. -- Reduced public slit yet which is silly epic and -- And smooth -- the car out yet I think BMW wants to keep their kidney girls and they have headlights the balance -- -- you know -- on the the -- you know they could do so much for that there's so many design possibilities. These I mean they talk about these laser -- -- ten micro. Think about every awesome cars from the thing that pop up and that's how we deal need to pop up exactly slowly -- -- comes as slick yet. And they don't even need to be out by you know they don't even after that dual headlights like -- -- uses traditional you could just have like a row laser. You know -- laser -- along the the -- something. Although BMW does point out that makes the safe so they're not so you're not like people's legs off you have blinding people are operable network. The digital lending people -- to leave it up people. Cutting your weight neutral use and all all that. It's very they actually bounce the light through this -- some analysts at -- phosphorus and substance which changes the color of the light from a bluish quality to a white quality and they say that the white qualities pleasing to people's lives which I guess they figured out by -- a lot of people look at at -- go to that's pleasing the man. What's gonna be -- when people start from the retrofit this to their -- -- And -- -- rather know people playing lasers in your -- an analyst -- an ill fit each idea regularly excellence by pointed up the sky every. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- And pop culture was like that movie real geniuses develop -- -- nearly exceedingly users from species and an expert in people's houses down in -- The -- popcorn is that's a lasers and it sounds like -- the blazers and -- and Star Wars definitely. And now you're gonna be able to flip a switch and take somebody else's car out and thickened doctor you. -- -- -- -- When you lose them they were put on the endangered species list we -- cats but would have taken months to clear up the -- -- You know I have ones and pool request. And as sharp -- for future. Evidently my -- optic company informs me that that can't be done. It reminded me what I hate you people -- honestly. -- -- Here it's insane enough to help -- is IE -- analysts like to start out yet exactly. And -- BMW six series is it was called the shark when initially came out at that. So to -- -- includes. Leave their headlights on Sunday -- -- -- -- it would be a shark that that the laser that benefit. And distributed -- this might be the technology in the future in the mean of the fugitive it's -- well it's a delicate. Of -- He should never. But on a car and in what kind of car you should never put ugly he's crazy lights on. You should never put -- weird fast and furious under blue light on your car you should never put lights in your grill so people can see how beautifully greener it is. And by all means you should never do this to a Ferrari 45 Italians and got. I guess that the video that I found on YouTube. Of some guys that that -- the that the Chinese owner. If there are flush with many of their right now and naked guy bought. A white Ferrari -- Italian dropped 250 a 225000. Dollars on it. And then the first thing He did with this up oh boy put loosely cold cathode lights underneath. And in the grill. And I don't know if if at and it -- -- this guy just salt shrine and legislate yes I want that. It's very -- Michael update -- he's got them that they they -- the hood yes. And analyses -- and have them in the -- case in civil that there are just -- -- At -- think it's -- the glow -- what's interesting is in effect you're gonna TVs also installs troops. In -- -- late -- also installed the of the late in the in the engine bait and show off the satellite. I thought this was. Ridiculous. To have negatives to first obviously this is what to do which are two -- and 25000 dollars worth RU. Go down to Craig and middle eighties and you start putting them everywhere but. Every comment on this blog post in the Arctic -- That scarlet degree I think it's -- -- apparently I know nothing. I saw that -- I don't get it either why people think in this is the idea I mean okay it's a good idea and in 1999 -- -- On a on a 205000 dollar Ferrari now it's not -- yet. This you know. Queries to sell a certain class a certain style and I think it EQ I changed -- -- -- by. And by a robbery and it's -- And you might as well put on the you know that the 24 inch wheels on listening to a -- -- there -- that the next we've used cars. And -- of those. -- late isn't vortex generators that are and the Mitsubishi evo and market -- people love to buy they violate. -- little -- little shark fin. In the collect thirteen of them across the spoiler no we because it makes cars faster it's not. -- -- never mind that there -- -- wind tunnel tuned for that vehicle yet. That's immune -- -- in -- to knock off satellite radio in tennis to my. -- we've -- -- and they had stability serves going to be like -- on Oracle's on the side. So com enters on the story about the Ferrari you're you're you're wrong learner or -- on them. I had that I think their -- -- it's adding that card is looks wrong with that. You have these little Switzerland is the current -- another mystery of fixing it it. It's bigger than average basket at that but. I think it actually is operated. Right we -- and that went on the road in the 2011 Ford transit connect. And you feel like it journals today -- plumber. And when you get it going nowhere fast. Academic things allocated. Drag strip and -- and -- the transit connect this. Utility -- -- -- actually the word version we're in is is the wagon that's -- the wagon as opposed the man because it has actually yes that a rear seats. And it navigated in -- trim it's got no rear seats. But he's received actually pulled out of the way pretty easily and pretty parsing and maximize this. Really cavernous. -- -- -- He's here -- and I don't think -- had ever been used more appropriately. To describe storage space -- -- you can. Practically standing -- nightmare. Between. It probably end up back there really however -- -- can barely testament my hand in the driver's seat in just a ton of space unlike. The big bands and stuff -- of yesteryear. -- as a horse owner and and it's board under attack two liter four cylinder. 136 horsepower. So not a ton of horsepower but then again it doesn't really need it it's really just designed. Yet -- -- a lot of equipment terror. People at work crew around a city or it's for those urban area places where you -- -- it's just -- big. Yeah you can't really easily park and gigantic -- in the city and you probably don't even need that sort of power. To discuss -- in in the middle there. -- -- an interest in New Jersey and then it. But purely utilitarian vehicle we're also looking at them purely New -- -- -- dashboard experience here. Yeah I mean. Dad you're buying -- Kennedys are a hundred -- is currently develops waste money on stereos and navigation seminal lab so. We got. An effort radio here speaking slot was surprisingly in -- that's not the fanciest part of an especially like Hillary I can put zoos -- wanted to. -- an empty they're vague idea that you can actually get sync in this current sync -- view bone would you vote and -- player hooked up. But that's an option because again complete buyer made like hey Adam really do need network -- -- workers don't need that I don't wanna have them -- card. There should be -- take place February isn't just talk around cellphones as their driving. So that's the -- Ford transit connect a vehicle that. It's not the normal kind of thing we review and we only really got it in because -- earn your title likes. Yes noble I was hoping to beat -- to get it in and we can't -- -- -- Leo always moving furniture it's perfect and that it's got so much space that there and it seems pretty good fit probably a queen or king sized bed it insisted -- Being. Yeah -- -- it in if it doesn't really high needs bigness. Like you know and sometimes you see corridors they're small on the -- and they're like holders of spreading about space in here. This car just looks big. It has a small footprint I mean it basically the biggest port focus that you can buy it. The old portrait that the new focus that everyone liked so much these old -- that. I XP. Spit a good deal amount of time driving around my personal life and did not enjoy. Ellison -- is based on the focus platform although it's sad -- -- big band kind of thing it's got a cap on top which gives it a lot of extra -- -- there. And it's it's got some weird quirks -- -- it's got this weird key it's like the chemical He. It's still cylindrical. -- As opposed to being in -- -- need to use that to open the hood. You can't just open that which I guess is a security measure the got a fleet or maybe to some and they do in Turkey where this thing is yeah I don't know how that the security -- If your in the fleet until -- -- you keys to a car. You have the keys etc. and it probably keeping you at. And I don't know how many. You know drivers for a company -- is -- and around under the hood as they get in -- legislation off of all at the quart of oil but that's that's. Or -- and for cars -- nuclear is that I did like how that the back was worked out to where the the doors opened straight back. Which -- you're not banging them in -- walls or other cars -- an evening and then you actually are pushing yellow button to make them open why. -- and then I think I think I -- cooling engine that. There's even another option analysts you open an even wider view option it to be pulled -- -- says the vehicle yet. I don't know why you would ever need to do that once -- ready to and that allied but I mean it I guess if you've ever immediately knew I didn't back against the side of the car because your carry -- bulky that hangs out. That could -- vehicle. -- the interesting. Yeah it's -- I didn't. I I drove that car a fair amount and I can't say I really can actually drive. That's the point it at NASA dot claim that I mean -- -- got the sport's speed transmission that. It's okay at small low speeds that are run around the city or whatever but it trying to pass a car on the freeway. So you for it because of only way to get any kind of power out of that. Tiny a fairly -- engine -- So you -- -- and the thing like comes down -- second years I -- like that India has been jewels to as a goes down a couple of years. -- is only up for -- to work with -- And debt and then the engine makes a horrible choral sound and no power happens at that -- still like. Don't mean 85 miles per hour faster than you've been you're. Cells and yelled yeah there's a lot of -- that that that a but you know so I was -- -- revenue have been I was amused watching Brian Cooley in his video on that carbon -- review -- my -- talking about how much He does want -- and it. -- -- -- -- You just like being -- it hit it in -- driving around taking about things you configure it. So many of them was wishful thinking. About yet -- -- -- I thought of a few ideas what you do with that car 1 would be -- well actually you know -- it would be a bad utility. Vehicle for a lot of different municipal needs and even even things because there because -- -- red I was thinking. San Francisco fire department it would you know we put an emblem on the side and there's so many things that I mean is lot of things of our department doesn't they don't really need the big trucks for yet. Usually they're riding around in -- Explorers. -- -- and enough to be. Right and you know around a city it's like -- affirming my grocery run which they got to do occasionally and I've seen them do that in. The medium size toxic. With diesel sitting there idling while there in the store and grocery and easily submit it look for these yeah that would work. Or something that doesn't require an and in. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Yan at I personally think it to be really cool to Egypt one of the the -- model that has via. The middle covers instead of the -- in the in gaelic speakers and can cover the back in the additional -- blind date and I. Openness of beauty store you know litigating and in the receipts -- public back in here and disposal but there. -- nothing -- -- But what would have air airbrushed on the side and and and -- anything outside it is black if this. I would actually -- it looks like I blacked out something that. It used to be. Yet hasn't -- does mean. -- -- inwardly He knows it looks like you tried to black out something but in the last couple letters of mortuary yeah. Funeral services. -- -- -- -- -- Where can rehearse the long enough and important matters and producers -- need to be that vertical jets it is these illicitly. Multi funerals at -- Too wide and three tall -- -- is in a couple funerals when trip its efficiency -- -- They evidently of the stylus Hamachi need to put Michael brass things on the outside and an early -- -- all like Dexter Israel needs to get. Cover the entire Bay Area like plastic wrap every now and then it's -- they do -- room to protect your serial killer. And -- until a little -- in those -- integrated and nasty little and in municipal and. I think we've gone down a wrong pathway here that fit that. Lets you listen to this its -- far from the ice cream truck idea. Or maybe equipment. -- -- -- -- in the Ford transit connect which is actually our one -- one of our latest that reviews coming up we've got a right up. On that on -- -- -- Brian Cooley is video on that also in the -- garage we just. Sample understood he's on the Toyota Camry hybrid -- -- went down. This LA to get a special previous drive the 2012 that a Camry hybrid. -- next step we've got the Honda Civic hybrid and the very ugly Nissan Murano cross Cabral a case. Ten and coming up after that that no cars for a -- because -- the Frankfurt auto show's over just looking a lot of new cars on the road. After all on the show floor there's also the Honda Civic DXL. The united trusted in the -- use -- know how that regular civic -- that energy. -- we got that up. This has been the CNET car tech live podcast you can now take a look at our site look at our show notes -- and the links we talked about. That car tech dot cnet.com. And you can now follow us on net Twitter I am Wayne C underscore SF than -- usually.
