CNET First Look
Motorola Cliq (T-Mobile)With its excellent design, user interface improvements, and admirable feature set, the Motorola Cliq gives a big boost to the Android OS. We had some performance quibbles and the MotoBlur interface can be a bit much, but the phone offers a lot to like.
[ Background music ] >> Kent German: Hi I'm Kent German Senior Editor here at CNET.com. Today we're gonna take a first look at the Motorola Click. This is a new android phone for T-Mobile. It's also the first android phone that's not from HTC. This is available in the US Market and I have to say that I really like this design a lot. I think that of the android phones I've seen so far it has the best design. Really as far as functionality goes controls, display this is a great phone. Motorola has introduced a new user interface called Motoblur, that's a real integral part of this phone but I'll get to that in a second cause first I want to talk about that design. From the outside you see it has a pretty standard smartphone design with a touch screen. Pretty good sized; the screen is 3.1 inches with just a little under what we really like for a touch screen usually we like about 3.25 inches but the display is so brilliant and the interface is pretty easy to use so we're not too concerned about that size. It is a slider phone so that means it has a full QWERTY keyboard. This is a great keyboard. I really wish there were 4 lines instead of 3 cause right now that top row; numbers share space with letters but the good thing is this keyboard is really spacious. I can dial and text quickly. I can even sort of text by feel if I wanted. The phone does have an accelerometer so as you slide it open and closed the orientation of display will change. Also when you're in an internal menu the display will rotate as you rotate the phone. Down below in the bottom of the display you'll see the standard pull tab that will bring up the android menu that looks just about the same. You actually get 5 home screens here so you can slide those back and forth. That is an improvement over the 3 home screens that we've gotten on previous android phones There's also a talk control down here, press that you'll get the phone dialer, contacts, recent calls list, everything you'd expect. Also there's your contacts button right here. As mentioned earlier MotoBlur is a huge part of this phone. MotoBlur is much like Palm Synergy in that it combines all of your contacts, email accounts, contacts stored on the phone and contacts and social media like Facebook, puts them altogether and allows you to look at them in 1 place. MotoBlur also adds a couple of widgets to your home screen you can customize. One is called happenings, that will display status updates from all from your friends whether it's via Twitter, Facebook, or MySpace. Also have your messaging inbox, a universal box will display unread messages from all linked accounts. Of course you can limit exactly what you want, coming to that happenings widget but if you have a Facebook account, you have a couple email accounts, something's constantly coming in there in this little light above the display is constantly blinking so the amount of information can be overwhelming. You might find it a little creepy too to have all of your worlds colliding at once. But you might want to limit exactly what comes in to MotoBlur, what your managing, what you're handling just to give yourself maybe a little privacy and just do not have that information just be such a well I hate to say it but blur constantly coming at you. Other features on the phone: You have your standard android features so you got all your customization, Google, GMAIL linking. You have your calendar, the calendar feature actually synchs Outlook calendar which is new, didn't see that before on some of the Android phones. Also it will synch your GMAIL calendar as well. 5 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, Wi-FI, GPS, micro USB support, PC synching, personal organizer. We're also glad to see Quick Office which lets you view and edit Excel and Word accounts. There's the music player. You can get your YouTube. So really a nice rounded assortment of features but I think the best thing about this phone is that design and if you like all of your information coming in together at once MotoBlur is probably good as I said very much like Palm Synergy works almost exactly the same way.
