Nokia 5310, 5610, N81 and N95 8GB unveiled

Yesterday at the Old Billingsgate Market in London, Nokia unveiled two new music phones, the Nokia 5310 (pictured) and 5610 XpressMusic, a new multimedia phone called the Nokia N81 and an updated Nokia N95 that comes with 8GB of onboard memory.

Interestingly, the event wasn't just about new handsets -- Nokia also announced the start of a new music store, a content site called Ovi, which apparently means 'door' in Finnish, and showed off the new and improved N-Gage platform that will run on N-Series handsets. Nokia also gave the audience a sneak preview of its upcoming user interface, set to launch next year, that looks an awful lot like Apple's iPhone. When questioned about it, Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia's executive VP & general manager of Multimedia, said, "If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride." Hmmm. At only 10mm thick, the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic is one of the slimmest music phones Nokia has ever made. We were really impressed with how skinny this phone is. We also liked the easy-to-access music keys on the top left of the 5310.

On the back there's a 2-megapixel camera, but no LED photo light or flash. Other features include support for a 4GB microSD card that will store up to 3,000 songs, an FM radio, dedicated music keys and one of our favourite features, a 3.5mm headphone jack, so you can use a normal pair of headphones with it.

The Nokia 5310 costs around £150 and will be available at the end of the year, most likely for free on a monthly contract.

The Nokia 5610 XpressMusic is a slider phone that also supports up to a 4GB microSD card, has a 3.5mm headphone jack and comes with a 3.2-megapixel camera.

At 17mm deep, the Nokia 5610 is thicker than the 5310, but comes with 3G connectivity for faster downloads and video calls.

Unlike the 5310's camera, which doesn't come with any lighting, this handset features an LED photo light.

Underneath the Nokia 5610's screen there's a slider key that gives you quick access to all the onboard music functions. Both the 5310 and 5610 will fit nicely in Nokia's music phone portfolio, which is now being supported by Nokia's new music store, Ovi.

The Nokia 5610 costs around £300 and will be available at the end of the year, most likely for free on a monthly contract.

Here's the phone everyone was waiting to see -- the Nokia N81, an impressive media-centric handset that features up to 8GB of onboard memory and supports N-Gage games. The new multimedia menu (pictured) lets you browse your digital content in a similar way to Windows Vista's Aero feature.

At 18mm thick, the N81 is the thickest phone of the bunch, but it packs a lot in, including an expandable microSD slot, an FM radio, stereo speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a navi-wheel that lets you scroll through content quickly and easily.

The Nokia N81 is set to be in shops by the end of the year. Pricing has yet to be announced, but it will most likely be free on a monthly contract.

Designed to work in landscape mode, the N81 is great for playing games and watching video clips on. There are dedicated game buttons on either side of the handset that let you play games as if you were using a portable console, such as the Sony PSP.

The games themselves will work on Nokia's revamped N-Gage platform, which is supported by all the big players, including EA Mobile and Glu. For a preview of the sort of games you'll be able to play on it, click play on the video below. The games will cost between €6 and €10 (£4-£7) and will be downloadable from Ovi.

You may think that this is just a black Nokia N95, but it's actually an upgraded version that has 8GB of onboard memory and updated GPS functionality, which enables it to find satellites faster than before.

The 8GB Nokia N95 will be available by the end of the year. Pricing has yet to be announced.
