Inside the world's most incredible collection of Ferraris
There are plenty of factory towns on this planet earth with recognizable names.
Few get the juices flowing like Italy's Maranello, which is the home of Ferrari.
Behind me is the company's museum where you can get an amazing look at some of the best cars the company has produced.
Would you believe there's an even more impressive collection?
But normally you need to spend a couple million dollars to gain access to it.
Follow me and I'll get you in for free.
[MUSIC]
This is the official Ferrari museum in Maranello, just across the street from the factory itself.
In here you'll find a rotating collection of vehicular beauties, most featuring a prancing horse on the nose.
And a very large percentage painted in some shade of red.
You'll find everything from early examples of the breed to some of the company's most successful racers.
When we visited I couldn't resist spending a few extra minutes pondering this special exhibit bringing together all of the company's highest performance road cars.
From GTO to La Ferrari.
[MUSIC]
Welcome to the Formula One Cliente room, Cliente meaning client in Italian.
All of these amazing cars you see in front of you are former racers that competed in the Formula One Championship, but they've all now entered into their retirement phase Sold off to the hands of some very, very lucky clients.
[MUSIC]
The Formula 1 Clienti program launched in 2003 with the goal of bringing very, very privileged Ferrari customers onto the track in the world's fastest cars.
These are the real deal.
In fact Ferrari has to wait two years before selling them to prevent any of its latest technologies from falling into the wrong hands.
[MUSIC]
With this many jewels, it was hard to pick favorites, but here are three that stood out to me.
First is Gilles Villeneuve's 1980 312 T5.
It featured a flat 12 engine, a Boxer configuration that didn't leave room for the down force boosting underbody ground effects That the competition namely Lotus, was exploiting.
As such, it was a miserable failure but it's hard to ignore the car given the god-like status of the man who wrestled it around the track.
This is Michael Schumacher's 2004 championship wining Formula One car.
That would be the last of the amazing seven championships the man would win.
In this car, he won a record 13 races that season marking the end of his period of absolute global domination.
Finally, is Felipe Massa's 2008 Formula 1 car that won the championship for about 30 seconds.
If you were an F1 fan back then, you will surely remember the celebrations in Massa's family at his home track in Brazil As he crossed the line to win the championship only to have Louis Hamilton to pull of an amazing pass a moment later, earning him the vital point that he need to steal the trophy.
It's an amazing car with an amazing story.
Formula one car can start a 1.2 million to 1.5 millions.
This is the cost to buy the car.
The formula one car is a very, very complex object.
That you need a specific training and preparation and experience to handle.
So, if you take home, maybe it's that the car is dead.
It's there, you can watch it, but this is the end of it.
That's why most of our customer keep the car in storage, [UNKNOWN] now our facility so we can take care about the cars, and the car is always ready to go to the next event.
[MUSIC]
That sounds ridiculous at first blush, but one look at the dizzying array of custom parts and tools required, not to mention the massive room full of boutique vintage tires, and you start to realize the impossibility of keeping a car like this running on your own.
[MUSIC]
Now if you can't quite afford a Formula One car, in the next building is the FXX Program.
These are track only variants of Ferrari's fastest road cars starting with the original FXX back in 2005 which is based on the Enzo.
After that came the 599XX and now the FXXK based on the [UNKNOWN] Ferrari.
That car, boasting more than 1,000 horsepower, will set you back about $2.7 million if you want to join in on this very exclusive club.
[MUSIC]
If you can swing it you You can take delivery of your new FFXK right here in Marianello and test it out on Fiorano on Ferrari's private test track that's right on factory grounds.
And that's exactly what this very, very lucky owner was doing in his brand new ride.
If you think that's jealousy you're picking up in my voice, You're absolutely right.
Those needing a little guidance can even call upon the services of one of Ferrari's 10 racing drivers, who will show and or tell them the quick way around the circuits.
[SOUND] [NOISE]
One trip to the F1 [UNKNOWN] room at the Ferrari factory is more than enough to make it abundantly clear that Ferrari takes very, very good care of its most loyal customers.
It's also enough to make a humble automotive journalist rethink some of his past career decisions.
Maybe I should've gone for investment banking, after all.
