Audi R8 Shootout: V8 Manual vs. V10 Performance
This is the current top of the [UNKNOWN] range between performance.
In fact, it's the very car that I reviewed recently.
It is wonderful.
But one of the things that I love about this thing is that we're presence in correcting the original one.
I kept talking back to him.
I couldn't get out of my mind.
And really to check that my mind isn't playing tricks on me.
I need to compare it back to back to one of those originals.
Only those ones.
Hello Henry.
Look what I have here the answer to your prayers.
And yes it is still a lot of fun.
[MUSIC]
[MUSIC]
[BLANK_AUDIO]
Mr.
Catch po.
And what a fine shops you've got there.
[UNKNOWN]
Thank you very much very fashionable yourself.
Still looks good.
You've got slightly crisper sort of crease lines.
Yes bit faster, isn't it?
But yeah.
Look, this is the best view isn't it?
How spectacular is that?
So good, isn't it?
Yeah.
Just, does this all sound good?
Yes, wanna go?
Yeah.
Passenger seat.
Really?
Yeah, yeah, yep.
Sure.
Yes, yes.
[MUSIC]
Right.
I'm very excited about this.
[NOISE] Now, be gentle.
Well, ESP, let's pop that off.
Not just both stages?
Both stages.
[SOUND]
First thing I noticed about this car is the gear blocks.
A proper metal, almost see through gear box.
It's really a work of art and also just a Types of criminal justice data arrest offenders charges counts.
This is all different types you can have their, virtually all criminal justice record keeping is a search process, right.
It's a social production of data Maybe 500 miles, okay.
Yeah.
And, I could believe that it was built today.
Honestly from the outside seems like there's very few things that date it, but this [UNKNOWN] look at the map on that.
It's just, I don't know how we ever managed to get anywhere using it.
[UNKNOWN] that's all it is.
So tell us about the engine then Henry.
The engine.
4.2 litres is a dry sums version of the RDRS force engine.
Obviously naturally aspirated the V8.
[NOISE] Engineers just launched, a gentleman came later.
Not much I would change about it in terms of the mechanics and the engine.
Obviously, the tech we've all moved on, but the feel of it, the seat.
Seats [CROSSTALK] position the whole sort of, this still feels modern.
How does the balance of the car feel?
[SOUND]
It feels lovely,
[BLANK_AUDIO]
with a 911 you know you're very much aware of the extra weight at the back.
Yeah.
[SOUND] But here, the weight distribution doesn't feel quite like that.
What's lovely about this car, it is giving me massive amount of performance and huge fun.
And yet, I have done the best part of 500 miles in it, and it's such a great GT car.
So they really did do a proper job of this.
The usable supercar Yeah.
But it doesn't scare me as much as it should.
I like to be slightly scaredin the seat.
[LAUGH]
And do you know what that mean?s
That eans It's a case of I suppose semantics as to whether it is actually a supercar or whether it's a sports cars.
Yeah, especially this was a non level.
Ride, wasn't it?
Yeah.
And at 911 it's a sports car not a super car.
Even when you get up to the licensed [UNKNOWN] there's a question as to whether it's actually a super car or whether it's just a super sports car, I suppose.
And I think this falls into the This sports Car category.
Yes, I agree with that.
Then that probably is mass appeal.
[UNKNOWN]
Yeah.
So we can find out what your mass appeal is.
[LAUGH]
In your new one.
Yes.
I showed you mine.
You'll show me yours.
[LAUGH] [SOUND] And so we move forward some 13 years from a time when the first iPhone was just being released.
Robert Downey Jr.
had yet to become Iron Man, and Ferrari was still winning F1 titles to an age of Mercedes F1 dominance, 24 Marvel films and Instagram
It's @henrycatchpole, @vickibutlerhenderson and @carfectionfilms by the way.
Right.
[SOUND]
That engine sounds.
Good.
So good brakes work [CROSSTALK]
[UNKNOWN]
I am very displeased with this automatic thing between us.
I know the worst thing about it is the fact that we had some nice big sort of paddles like Ferrari or something like that.
But [CROSSTALK] he's got his plastic as well.
Which.
Yeah.
It's about as far away from the lovely tactile.
Yeah.
Very shifty you could get some [UNKNOWN] chop Johnson.
Yes do let's see.
So what do you haven't tons of power?
So, I was 440.
[UNKNOWN] What are you?
I am 611.
611?
Allmost 200 break more.
That's a staggering amount more.
It's like 50% more isn't it.
Yeah, but considering that human beings haven't evolved driving wise that well in those years [LAUGH]
Okay, not to 62 I was 4.6 Seconds.
3.1.
3.1!
It's a massive leap, isn't it, in that time?
And so I know we've obviously got more power and stuff, but that's-
Wow, yeah.
Sounds like a lot of weight.
So that was 1560 kilograms.
You?
Actually, fairly good.
1595, so-
It's a 1595, so not much Heavier, you've got more power.
You're quicker.
Yeah
[SOUND] After all he was good looking as mine?
I don't think so.
No
[SOUND]
I think my car still looks.
Utterly stunning in silhouette, front, rear, three-quarters, looks divine.
Trouble is when you've got it so right to start with, where do you go from that?
Yeah, good point.
You just make it more fussy, don't you?
What about money then mine was 77,000 pounds.
This is a bit more on it is the top of the range.
Yeah, so it's got everything thought.
Hundred and 41,000 pounds, top notch, top speed 187 mph, which also is a bit special, isn't it?
Because it's just over $300 an hour and so what about the Less.
205 miles an hour.
Oh,right in the side barrier.
So you are saying right?
Doesn't make it a super common.
I think in the threes and over 200 miles an hour you got to be,
yeah.
before you can raise up your safety belt.
So in a way that has moved the game or they stopped?
Okay, here's the big question then Henry.
Okay.
You are going home tonight.
Yeah.
Which are will you taking?
As much as I know that I can listen to podcasts in this.
[LAUGH]
[UNKNOWN] On the way back Yeah.
And there's a little bit of me that likes the luxury.
Yeah, likes to kick back and listen to [UNKNOWN]
Yeah.
Yeah.
[LAUGH]
Has to be the original.
Yeah.
For me, and it's, I sound like a broken record.
It's terrible isn't it?
I sound like a complete dinosaur, but thank [UNKNOWN] It's all the entertainment you need Isn't it because just just for Halloween even just going between fifth and sixth on the motorway, it's just just fun, isn't it?
Yeah.
If I shut my eyes and imagine myself driving home and do I want to be freaking out
House's air behind stable although, I want to be clunking through a lovely metal gate?
Yes, please.
In the future, our left leg is going to be redundant,
[UNKNOWN]
What's gonna happen?
It's just gonna wither [UNKNOWN]
Yeah exactly [UNKNOWN] some some beefy right leg, and [UNKNOWN] Henry I've love today.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Thank you.
[UNKNOWN]
Inevitably we focused on the differences.
And it will be easy to say that the conclusion is simply that the passing of 13 or so years has seen impressive numerical gains.
But at the expense of some interactivity and the driving experience.
Yet the other equally important story with the RH is just how much has been retained in terms of beautiful balance, glorious sound and arresting appearance, marriage to surprising practicality.
Find yourself in either one, and you're going to have a very good time indeed.
