New Amazon Kindle Fire HD to match Google Nexus 7

The Amazon Kindle Fire HD is about to be updated to match the new Google Nexus 7.

Reports say both the 7-inch and Kindle Fire HD 8.9 tablet will be updated with eye-popping new screens.

The screens are expected to get a serious upgrade. The 7-inch model will get a bump to 1,920 x 1,200 resolution, or 323 pixels per inch. And the 8.9-inch model will have a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600, or 339ppi.

Inside each tablet is expected to be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM. As before, the two tablets will come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB flavours. And the 8.9-incher will sport an 8-megapixel camera.

They're also reported to be 4G, but whether that means they'll be compatible with the variety of 4G used in this country remains to be seen.

A recent price cut to £139 for the current model suggests Amazon is clearing shelves to make way for a new Fire HD. Typically though it takes a while for new Amazon kit to cross the pond, so there's no guarantee the rumoured new Kindle Fire HD tablets will be on sale in this country any time soon.

No prices have been confirmed, but Amazon will have to keep the cost down if it wants to compete with the Nexus 7, which starts at £200.
