We scream, you scream, we all scream for slow-melt ice cream (Tomorrow Daily 237)

On today's show, Land Rover shows off a transparent trailer that you can tow behind your car. Ice cream that's not going to melt! And VR, that actually sounds amazing. I'm sorry I don't even want to say my thing. And VR is helping children with special needs. See that is a little bit better. It's better but what about helping children with special needs with ice cream that doesn't melt? We're all winning. Tomorrow Daily. [MUSIC] Greeting, citizens of the internet. It's Tomorrow Daily, the best geek talk show in the known universe. I'm Ashley Esqueda. That's Khail Anonymous, and really, we have quite a plate. Of stories for you today. I mean it's gonna get pretty good, so buckle in, everyone. Sit down if you're standing and then buckle in. Let's hear the headlines. [MUSIC] All right. Are you ready for, I know you're scared a little bit. I'm feeling very feisty today. Are you ready for ice cream that is maybe just not melty, because that sounds pretty amazing. That sounds like a wish come true. We've seen color changing ice cream that changes as you eat it. We've seen there's lots of different kinds of ice cream, lots of different kinds of things that serve ice cream, but this This is pretty cool. This is from scientists from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. They are looking into using a naturally occurring protein called Bacillus subtilis to slow down the melting process in ice cream. So it's a bio film, so you can see this video's actually very educational. Yeah. Because I read this story a few times and I'm like I feel like a fool, but I'm also not a scientist and I don't understand Dead. So, yes, they secrete this protein from a bio film. This protein gets mixed in. They're quoted as saying the protein works by adhering to fat droplets, and air bubbles, making them more stable in a mixture. And so, it's a very smooth texture. The ice cream that they made with it has a smooth texture. No ice crystals. So if you've ever put some ice cream in a freezer and you take it out and there's ice crystals in there. Now that's gross. You don't want that. You don't wanna have that anymore. And they're saying this could make it to market, this type of ice cream could make it to market in five years. Oh, really. Three to five years. You can see ice cream and then milk. But okay, they made it look like skin and goo. Where's the picture of the actual ice cream? Is that in this video? Well, they talk a lot about sort of the biofilm and the process of protein itself. So that's- Right. It's super interesting that I kinda wanted them to work backwards. Okay, look at this ice cream. We've set this out for ten minutes. Good point. It's like, okay, how did you do that? Here's how we did it. But instead it just looks like, eat this gooey skin stuff. I think really- But that's super interesting, it's like five years is, help me figure it out. 2020. Okay. Did they say how long it takes for it to melt or anything? Well they said it takes a lot. Blower, cuz they, I think their way to say kind of describe either the way that I had heard it, sort of referred to was almost like, the difference between ice cream and like a yoghurt, like actual yoghurt. So this, adding this protein would change the consistency a little bit but because of the change in consistency of the ice cream Then it wouldn't melt as fast, so it would be. They didn't give like a percentage or anything, like 50% full. They didn't say anything like that but I do like where they're going with this. And it is a naturally occurring protein, so it's not like genetically modified food that a lot of people are worried about. Not me, I'll eat love. I just wanna genetically modify everything I see. But yeah. So protein is naturally occurring, but they also said that it could pave the way for low-fat and lower calorie versions of ice cream. That's incredible. And also, potentially dairy free versions of ice cream for lactose intolerant people, cuz well maybe, Can't eat dairy. Yeah I hate lactose. Super cool stuff. So I thought that was really interesting. Okay, please. I'm very confused. Okay, so we've seen VR a lot on this show because we love VR because it's opening a whole new world of creativity and exploration and enhancing the mind. But a group of other people are actually using it to help kids that have a lot of mental issues. This is VR Kids, and they're hoping to help out kids. Who have special needs and need to cope with stress. So they created this thing called Journey of the Big Bear Festival. Aw. In which it's a story for learning disabilities. It's a non-profit that currently is offering its service for free for kids in Las Vegas. That's the only place right now. Okay. And you can apply on their website to have a session with the kid. This is currently the only experience for VR kids They're hoping to kind of like have more locations and make it more available. Different kinds for different special needs? RIght. To relieve stress and create positive image, and stuff like that. Yeah. It's good to see that they're using the BR experience to kind of help people out and help these kids out with special needs. Yeah, and it looks like it's not really skill based, so there's not a learning curve there. It's just sort of saying that you can experience and have a positive experience with. It seems like something Here's the video of the kids. [INAUDIBLE] Look at these kids enjoying themselves. It's adorable. So there you go. Just a short little story of VR kids. Hey VR kids, keep up the great work. Yeah non profit. So it's not like they're just out making money everywhere. They're just trying to help people so. I'm sure when Oculus the consumer model comes out, I'm sure they'll, because you said it's only in Vegas. I'm sure they'll kind of Release it to whatever store Oculus has. Vegas is such a weird location. For a tech startup, that is kind of an odd place. No, I mean if you have children with special needs in Las Vegas, I don't know. Well there are a lot of people that live there, who just never go to the Strip. Maybe, alright, I'll accept it. You're helping people so that's good. Okay, and then lastly let's talk about, let's talk about Land Rover because Land Rover has done sort of, again we've seen similar things to this before. We've seen this sort of see through cars, transparent cars, stuff where you don't see the doors or you don't see the hood. Stuff like that. Land Rover realized a lot of people Carry trailers. They pull trailers behind their car. And they decided, oh you know what, we're gonna make it invisible. So that's what they did. Wow. So you can see right there it's the invisible trailer. This is called the transparent trailer. A very obvious choice of name. The unveiled this And we're talking about it and they said, we use the video in it. I love this. They give guidelines for as you back the trailer up, it tells you exactly where the trailer is, but you don't see it. Wow. Kind of cool. They actually use video feeds from the car cameras. The car has a bunch of cameras. And then they combine that with a wireless camera that's inside the trailer. So you can see right now, they got an alert saying hey there's some weird cargo stuff going on here, your horse is moving around. And there's a pressure mat on the bottom. So say it's moving in a way it shouldn't be, and you can check on it. So the passenger can tap on it and see what's inside the trailer and you can cargo stable and you can check on your. Really showed the richest family in the world. Well so it's funny you mentioned that because they will conveniently be showing off this technology in a prototype vehicle at the Land Rover Burghley horse. Trials this weekend, actually starting today. Which we will be, Tomorrow Daily will be covering. Clearly attending. I'm gonna get out my derby hat. Producer Logan is by far the most excited, right? Very classy everybody. But yeah, very cool stuff. I love that they're doing this sort of transparent idea for I'm ready for this to come to my car. Like I'm just ready for it, like I want no more blind spots. Like I hate having blind spots on my car. So when that day comes where I'm, able to not have blind spots because of this transparent car tech, I'm in. We got to take a quick break, but before we do CNET and Gamespot editors are going to tell you all the delightful video games we've been playing. This is Play This. I've spent almost the last week entirely playing Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. It is the first game in the series to go into a massive open world rather than small little contained levels, which totally changes the way the game plays. So I've been playing this iOS game called "Prune," and it's about growing a bonsai tree, and slicing it so that it can grow and gain power from the sun to grow up taller. So all week I've been playing "Until Dawn," a creepy horror adventure game about a group of kids in a cabin. You're being stalked by someone, and people are getting picked off one by one. This week I'm playing a game called Universe Sandbox2, and it lets you play around with all the planets in the solar system, or other planets, and you can play around with their gravitational forces, and it's also got a lot of great cutscenes that seem to have been born in Kojima's love of film, and he's adopted a lot of those techniques. That we see in large cinema, and apply those to the games. It's just an excellent experience, and I give it a ten, because I think it's a game everybody should play. If you're like me, and just like to watch planets explode and stuff, it's kind of soothing in this weird, relaxing, end of the universe sort of way, so go check it out. The choices that you make dynamically change the way the game is played. For example, maybe if you snoop in someone's bag or if you hit a bird with a snowball, you can actually change the course of events that lead to a different character either dying or living. I've been trying to kill as many as possible because I think that's the way horror games, Games are meant to be played. And it's just a very calming, kind of zen experience. It's nice to be able to play something that is just like meditative and very soothing. [MUSIC] [BLANK_AUDIO] [MUSIC] Oh, hey, guys. Welcome back to the show. Not really sure where Khail went, but it is a Thursday and I do want to get this show on the road because it's a three day weekend. I guess I'll tell you what I'm into. This is into it. What I am into this week is the Walking Dead. This is the MacFarlane build toy for Logan. I got the governor's room going on here. 292 pieces, right here happening. It's pretty great. It's the governor's room. You get the whole aquarium with the zombie head. Really fun. Super awesome. I'm gonna build this,this weekend. I'm gonna put it on Periscope. And McFarland actually has some really awesome Sort of supplementary videos that you can watch. So they do these really quick builds that you just saw on the screen, which I really, really like. You can sort of see how it's done, and the finished product. And then, Todd McFarlane himself, actually will show you how the customize the governor's room, and all the other build sets that he has. To make them look a little more realistic, so one of the things he does is he puts a black ink wash on the door, and then he puts some fake gel blood on the ground to make it look more gooey and more visceral. It's really, really cool. So I really dig these. I think the Walking Dead one, this one was like 30 bucks. I totally love it, and I can't wait to build it. I'm gonna do it this weekend on periscope. That it's actually to the point where we put, producer Logan and I went out to buy a box, cut a hole in it and taped it together because both of us are into Metal Gear Solid V Phantom Pain. All three of us. That's all we've been talking about, when we haven't been talking about work. Because it's just an amazing experience, because it's open world, everyone gets their own experience, in a way. Everyone has their own cinematic story to tell, when we ran into them, it was like, this happened to me and then this and this and this. It's just one of those games, like Grand Theft Auto, where you have your own experience, you have your own strategy, because you have your own different loadout. I mean, there's a great story Every mechanic about it is just exciting. The AI is fantastic. The AI, sneaking around, you feel so cool. Anybody that's every played any of the Batman games will get what a game makes you. feel cool, and this totally does that. It's like, I've been a fan of Metal Gear Solid since, I mean Metal Gear Series since Metal Gear Solid, well that's not the beginning there were two games before it but anyway I don't like those games. Since Metal Gear Solid so I love me some Snake I love me some Big Bot, it's really great. I hope to live stream it soon. You're really into it, right producer Logan? << Yeah I can't stop. << Can't stop. << That's a problem. It's one of those games where I'll be playing for like three weeks. << It's so good. I'd highly recommend. << I was up until three thirty AM last night playing it. I'm real tired, but I'm going to go home right after this. What are you going home and doing after this, Logan? [MUSIC] We have a really interesting piece of user feedback today, and one that I think could shake the core foundation of this show. I was a little freaked out by it, honestly, when I first saw it. mm-hm. We asked you guys to use hashtag TV mind and tell us what it looks like in your mind for the neuro VR thing. And that was all well and good. I'm good, but then Spike Tiger tweeted at us, and then I got scared because he said, and we're going to talk about this at length, what if tomorrow daily is all in producer Logan's mind, you just hear his voice every so often. So is this a suggestion that this show entirely occurs in the mind of Logan, much like. Chicago Hope. Was it Chicago hope, the old tv show where it was like a whole show about doctors and then I believe the show had a fire so they die, then he turns a snow globe and it's like that's the hospital or whatever and it turns out it's just in this little kids mind the whole time He made up the whole story in his mind. One of the biggest cop outs in television history. Wait a minute. So you and I don't actually exist. No we're figments of Logan's imagination. All right, like his, like maybe there's something bad happened in his life and he's having to cope with it. Yeah, we're coping. Wait a minute. Maybe a coping mechanism? I don't Have any memories of anything happening outside of work. Like I only know of what happens in here. I'm telling you I am a little concerned. I can't remember a childhood. I can't remember a time before Tomorrow Daily existed. How does producer Logan feel about this? I need help. We're not helping him. No, we're enabling. But I'm sure as heck not going away. No way! Yeah. I'm not going anywhere. I deserve to exist. I don't know how I feel about this. I thought it was very creepy, and also a really salient point, so Thank you spike tiger for freaking me out and making me feel like I don't exist.
