Uber brings self-driving cars to San Francisco Uber users.
cnet had the scoop that Uber would launch self-driving car rides in San Francisco, our report also said the service would be available on December 14th.
Well it's all true, Uber's self-driving cars were already on the streets of San Francisco, however those vehicles were deployed for the purpose of collecting map data Uber launched it's self driving cars for ride hailing in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania back in September.
The San Francisco version is similar.
Self driving cars in San Francisco will be accompanied by a human being in the drivers seat.
Another person will be in the passenger seat to analyze data.
Uber is using modified Volvo XC90S equipped with Lidar and several cameras to see their surroundings.
Uber did not specify how large its fleet of self driving cars.
The cars are allowed to operate within San Fransisco only.
Rides will cost about the same as a Uber X ride.
There is one tricky point with this whole arrangement The State of California requires companies to obtain a permit for autonomous cars.
Uber does not appear to have a permit, but argues its cars aren't truly autonomous since a person is in the driver's seat.
