Today in one of the largest states sponsored hacking campaigns ever prosecuted by the Department of Justice we have unmasked criminals who normally work in total unanimity.
This indignment alleges that the defendants work on behalf of the running governor specifically
Islamic revolutionary guard core.
They hacked the computer systems of approximately 120 universities.
Approximately 320 universities in 22 countries.
144 of the university victims are American universities.
The defendant stole research that cost those universities approximately $3.4 billion to procure and maintain.
Once they gained access, the defendants, among other things, stole entire email mailboxes from the victims.
They even set up rules in the stolen accounts to secretly forward all new emails to the defendants.
Among their victims, the US Department of Labor, the United Nations, and even the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
That is the agency that regulates the interstate transmission of electricity, natural gas, and oil.
That agency has the details of some of this country's most sensitive infrastructure.
