Twitter is suing the US Government and a law suit filed on April 6. Twitter says the US Government wanted the company to reveal the identity of whoever is behind the ALT_USCIS account.
That account criticizes the Trump administration's handling of US citizenship and immigration services or USCIS.
The lawsuit also says U.S. customs and border protection issued a summons in March that would allow the agency to learn the identity of the account holder.
[UNKNOWN] said that allowing the agency to get this information would have a grave chilling effect on the speech of that account in particular, and other accounts that are critical of the government.
Alt underscore USCIS pinned a tweet of the first amendment to its account page, it also tweeted, FYI, some refugees became refugees out of fear of being unmasked by dictators because of dissent/opposing views.
Let's not have that here.
In the lawsuit, Twitter says the summons does not apply to its users.
Normally, this kind of summons is used when Customs finds something suspicious with merchandise being imported.
Additionally, Twitter says the U.S. Government infringed on its First Amendment rights.
The company also alerted the ALT_uscis account holder of the request on April 4th.
