The D-Link DHP-701AV powerline kit is too huge for its own good
[MUSIC]
Hi guys, **** Ngo here and this is the Powerline AV2 2000 gigabit starter kit from D-Link.
Now, take a look at the box here.
And, the photo here is quite misleading, because this is the actual adapter, look, it's huge.
Now, normally I have nothing against huge, but with this type of product The bigger it is, the harder it is for you to use.
I decided to plug directly into the wall socket like this.
The largest I mean you are going to find it hard to find a place to plug it in.
And when you do, it will block the adjacent outlets.
And remember Power adapters are supposed to be plugged into the wall directly and not via a power strip or surge protector.
Now how to use it is quite simple.
The kit comes with two identical adapters here.
You plug the first one into an existing network such as your router, and the second one into- A device such as a computer or a game console or a printer.
Then plug both of them into that one outlet and then you're done.
They will turn the electrical wiring between them into network cables and deliver quite a fast speed.
And speed is the second thing that is quite misleading about this D-Link kit.
Because D-Link claim that they can deliver up to 2000 Mbps.
And there's no way they can do that.
Because each adapter here comes with a gigabyte network port.
So at best they top at 1,000 gigabytes per second.
And even that wasn't true in my testing.
Now the two here has the sustained real world copy speed of.
Some 400 megabit per second.
Now to be fair, that's quite fast.
Some five times the speed of a regular ethernet connection and currently the fastest in the world of power adapters.
But seriously, two 1000 Megabit per second?
Who are you kidding.
So the question is, is this a good Powerline kit to have and the answer is, not really because it's very expensive at some $160.
Now I review this Netgear 1200 kit here.
It costs half the price, comes with a smaller adapter and was just a tiny bit slower.
So the bottom line is this one here is still a fast and convenient way to extend your wired network without having to run network cables.
But it's not a good deal cause of it's high price and the large physical size of the adapter.
For more of this one here check out my full review at Cnet.com.
Basically, you'd be very happy if you got this kit for free Which I did.
I'm still not happy, though.
I'm having a bad hair day, and that's because I'm **** Ngo, and this has been the first look at the PowerLine AV2 2000 Gigabit Starter Kit from D-Link.
Crazy hair.
