Samsung SVP talks design, functionality for new Notebook 9 Pro

Laptops
Hi, we're back at CES 2019. And we're coming to you live from a brand new location at Tech West and the sands Expo Center. I'm Lindsey Turrentine and joining me to talk about the latest Samsung Mobile tech, PC tech, is Alanna Cotton. She's senior vice president and general manager at Samsung. She's in charge of marketing for all of those wonderful devices and Thank you for being here Elena. Thank you Lizzy for having me again. This is great you're back for a second year yeah and just a couple days ago you took part in in the Samsung Keno we're looking at a little bit of that just real quick Let's show it off. I'm excited to introduce our next great step, the Notebook 9 Pro With an exquisite metal exterior, a thin diamond cut bezel, immersive display, and redesigned keyboard, the Notebook 9 Pro is stunning. I would like you to show us this laptop right now. Yes, yes, [INAUDIBLE] absolutely. Show us what's going on here, this is what you talked about onstage two days ago. Yeah, so this is the Notebook 9 Pro, as I say, bringing you gifts, Lindsay. So we're really proud of this redesign. What we heard from consumers is that they really wanted the device that moved as they moved, performance was there, that reflected their personal style. So hearing from them we went with a cool, metal exterior. We went with diamond cut edges. Wow. To really reflect their personal style, and interior wise maximise the surface screen to really make sure We can reflect maximum usage of the screen. So that screen really goes almost all the way out to the edge. All the way out to the edges. So beautiful screen, beautiful display, as only Samsung can do. And this is a touch screen. Exactly, so the idea of being able to really reflect users' personal style and use as they would like to on the go. Power packed all in one device. And by the way, there's a little surprise in the box. [LAUGH] So it actually comes in the box, it's an active pen. So the idea is that bringing human You know, idea interaction to technology is really important to us. So you think about the ability to able to draw, to sketch, to take notes, to interact with your device, just as you would a notepad. But still have the power and functionality of a PC. So this is an S pen. Can you use it with your phone, too? This is actually an active pen. So this actually comes with ability to really make sure that you have that really great grip in your hand, sketch, draw, great sensitivity on the device as we go forward. How has the thinking about What you can do with a laptop evolved over the last year since the last function of this part that we looked at on this stage last year. Absolutely, so we know that people are working and living different than they have ever in the past. We have the gig economy, we have the ability for folks to be entrepreneur, to do and choose work of their choosing to fit their lifestyle So what needs to happen is their tools need to evolve with them. So over the course of the last year, we've introduced a number of new models, working with partners such as Google, Intel, Qualcomm, and Microsoft, to give consumers choice on the device that they want But also to make sure that the devices are flexible enough that move seamlessly between work and play. Yes! So power-packed, as we were talking before, so this particular device is core I7. Latest until generation eight generation and so the ability to really make sure that you can really run when you need to run get done what you need to get done all while on the go reflecting your personal style. So let's say that you are an artist. Yes. Are you thinking than an artist is using this every for every single type that they are doing. And then sitting down at the end of the day and sketching right here. Are there any new workflows or processes or use cases using really wonky industry terms that you had in mind as you guys were thinking about building this machine? Absolutely, so what we really wanted to do was really address that creative spirit. So, I tell folks with today's were everybody's a creator, but really the people who are a hard core creative. So, really need to be able to ideate on the go, who need to be able to then showcase their ideas and modified them on the go. Imagine if you're an artist giving a pitch, you have worked that you've already save to the computer But the ability to make those adjustments on the go. We really want to make sure we have the tools and device that speaks to that community, as well as those folks who really want to make sure that they're moving seamlessly between [UNKNOWN] apps as well as their own particular life. Scenarios. So this is one of a few products you've announced. We've looked really closely at this. What else are you talking about at the show [UNKNOWN]? Yeah, we have some fun stuff. So the other couple of devices that we have We actually introduced a NoteBook 9 pin that comes with an embedded S pin. So great performance, same 8 generation intel, a core i7 processor. Her and embedded [UNKNOWN] that allows that connectivity to the Samsung mobile phone ecosystem that people love and a really [UNKNOWN] beautiful design that allows for that mobility and portability that we like. But also we did not forget about the gamers out there. We updated our Odyssey line up with a new Notebook Odyssey We love this laptop gaming on the goal, we know it's really important as people spend more of their time in most in this world, we wanna make sure that we have a device for people who maybe programmers by day, gamers by night. So this one comes with the latest generation intel core i7 processor, but also The Nvidia G Force RTX GPU. So the latest and greatest. So that's really interesting. So I have noticed that that gaming culture has created kind of a return to love of desktop gaming. Yeah. Which is really interesting to me, and is kind of a throwback. Are you finding that customers are excited to take a notebook and kind of turn it into something that they're feeling this emotional attachment with, and building a gaming world around? Yeah. Is it, Is something that you see as a primary machine or something that's more of an accessory that a gamer can take with them when they're not with their tower? Right. I think one of the things that we've done is that we've really wanted to make sure we partner with partners like Nvidia So, that there is minimum compromise between that desktop experience and the laptop experience. And, for those folks who experience the new laptop, I think they're gonna notice the difference versus previous models. They've really allowed them to have that experience they want to on the go and not be tethered, right? To a certain environment to be able to really enjoy the games. That they have. And then let's talk about the touchscreen. Yeah. What is the role of the touchscreen now? Because you see people who are completely dedictated to using a touchscreen, and then we also see this funny return to people who are interested in mechanical keyboards. Yeah. Where does the touchscreen fall into that experience? And do you think that people Do you think that people expect all screens to be touch screens now or is there a specific role for that? That's an interesting question. I think that one of the things we believe in at Samsung is this idea of humanity and technology coming together to really build the best of both worlds. When you can engage the human senses with touch, it just creates a better connection to whatever ideas you're creating at that time. So for us, we don't know if there's one size fits all. We really want to make sure that those folks who really want a physical connection to what they're creating They have that and ease of use, but we also know that they have also really need an optimize keyboard experience or an optimized pen experience. We wanna be able to provide options for all of those individuals to interact with their device to create. What they really want to create. And is there something that you think is different about this ecosystem from what your competitors are offering? Yeah. How is Samsung positioning this differently? Yeah, I think what we love about Samsung is that we are immersed in the mobile culture. We believe in mobile workforce. We believe in this idea of. You craft the life that you want to lead, so what that means is mobility. And so, bringing the best of what we know is important to our consumers mobility to a productivity based device is really what we thin we stand for, and can do better than anyone else out there. So, light weight, form factors..... Bringing integrated software, design of creative tools that really work, whether you're stationary or on the go, is really where our devices are gonna continue to shine and the folks we're gonna look to continue to serve. And is there gonna be anything surprising about this particular, I mean, you're just launching now. Yeah. The predecessors to this product, have you been surprised by any uses that you didn't anticipate for these products? Because there's a lot going on here, you've got the touchscreen, you've got the keyboard, you've the got the s-pen, what surprised you? I think what's surprising us is how much people are moving work and play, and how multiuseful the device is itself, so moving from Hey I'm cranking out this program to I'm streaming my latest favorite program and binging. We really want to make sure our devices can provide capability across the board. So this flow between work and play is increasing. It's not decreasing. So you think that it's the flexibility of the products and the multiple uses. Yeah absolutely. This has been really interesting Elena, thank you so much.
