CNET First Look
Samsung S850The Samsung S850 is a great choice for photography newbies; it's one of the least expensive cameras with manual exposure controls on the market.
[ Music ] >> Hi, I'm Will Greenwald, associate editor of CNET.com and this is the Samsung S850 digital camera. This is an eight mega pixel budget digital camera, you can probably find it for about under two hundred dollars, and it features full manual exposure controls, which is something you don't often see in a budget camera. It has full PASM shooting modes, which means you can change the aperture, the shutter speed or both and that gives you a lot more flexibility when exposing your shots. It can let you tighten up or expand the depth of focus, or it can make your camera shoot very fast or very slowly to create cool nighttime shots or crisp sport shots. This is an eight mega pixel camera with a 5X optical zoom lens. Now the zoom lets you get in a little bit closer than you'd normally be able to. With most cameras 3X zoom lenses, but it's not quite as wide at the widest angel so you're probably going to have to back up a little more to get everything into picture. A nice feature is when you shoot in manual mode it actually displays an exposure meter. So, if your changing the shutter and aperture a little icon at the bottom of the screen will tell you if the cameras going to get enough light when you take the shot. But for the price and the control you get this is a defiantly a good camera for beginner photographers who want to grasp the basics, the concepts, like shutter speed, aperture and exposure without really getting into the depths or investing a whole lot of money into cameras.
