I'm Josh Goldman with CNET and this is a look at the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8.
It's basically a strip down version of the company's other compact megazoom, the ZS10.
Both cameras have a 24-mm wide-angle lens with the 16X optical zoom and the control layout design are the same for the most part,
and many of the ZS10 shooting modes are mirrored in this model too including semi-manual and manual shooting modes for adjusting shutter speed and aperture, but that's pretty much where the feature similarities end; resulting in a fairly basic compact megazoom, maybe even somewhat too basic for its price.
That was the case with its predecessor too, the ZS5, so there's little reason to upgrade unless you want a wider, longer lens and a slightly larger LCD.
That's not to say the ZS8 isn't otherwise worth checking out.
It is a speedy camera with low shutter lag and short shot-to-shot times.
It also does well with continuous shooting, and it's photo quality is identical, if not a little better than the ZS10's, though neither is great for low-light photos.
So, if you don't want or need the ZS10's features, then the ZS8 is a decent choice and you'll save about 100 bucks too.
