No Man's Sky: Does this beautiful game fall victim to hype? (Open_Tab)

Video Games
[MUSIC] For people who don't know what No Man's Sky is, it is a very ambitious space exploration game that kind of took the gaming world by storm, if only because people kind of projected these maybe, unrealistic expectations on what this game is gonna wind up being. Including David Castmeyer. I'm very excited. I am taking off right after this show. Running home and downloading it. It is actually available now. On Twitter, people are asking people to go to their houses and download the game for them so that it is ready when they come home from work. Really. It's not that big of a game. It's going to be one of those weekends Yeah. Yeah. I've been playing it for about fifteen hours. It's different. I think for a lot of people it's a game that they weren't expecting, and again, that is not throwing shade at the developers. I think this game kinda got away from everybody, and once that big sort of E3 demo happened a couple of years ago, it kinda blew everyone's minds and completely changed the perception of what this game actually is and what people kinda wanted it to be. So I get that, and that's understandable. At its core, No Man's Sky is really just a resource survival map. It's a survival game, inventory management game. I know. That's like the Trio Kiss of Death. [LAUGH] Right there. There are moments in this game that you will literally Not believe what you're saying, but after a while you kind of understand what this game's about. I feel terrible saying this cuz I'm sitting next to someone who is very excited to play for the first time. I am so excited regardless of how many times you play that. Which is great and you should be because the first couple of hours are great. I will offer my own disappointment I think you'll like it. I'm gong to be so sad on Monday when I come in. The PC version might advantage of better specs. Maybe. They're usually really similar. That might be, but...the game might look better That might be it though. It's not going to change gameplay. It's not going to bring you to a level where you're like, this game offers a different feature set on PC. At least not at the beginning. I mean, I don't know if there's modding or whatever, but at the end of the day, these guys are all saying they're going to improve aspects of this game. Absolutely. The big selling points for me was that it's a community, basically it's a big [UNKNOWN] even though you can't actually Interact with people and the environment or whatever. There's so many cool things about the game that made me really intrigued. Obviously the biggest thing is every planet you go to is spontaneously created for you. Which is kinda cool. And for me, the reason I'm gonna go back and play some of that again this weekend is because I just like rolling the dice. I just like seeing What the game spits out, it's something technically no one else will ever see so that's kind of fun. Just the notion of hey, the math that this game is relying on allows it to create stuff that odds are no one else will ever see. The analogy of dice. So you roll a six, it's a blue sky, you roll a one, it's a yellow sky. Pretty much. And on down the line. So is part of your beef that There's not enough dice. There's not enough- Yeah. Stuff that can be different about each world. Like is it too similar, despite the fact that they say there's, whatever, 19 quadrillion possible worlds that people can get to. You see, and that's, yes. Simply put, yes. That is the complaint. It's because the asset pool that this game continually draws from Doesn't allow, and I get it. like it is an achievement what these guys have done and Hello Games. This is a technical achievement. At the same time though because of That. And what they did, tha game does not allow for the variance that people kinda project. Where it's like this could be anything like. Mm-hm. It's just not that. There's different terrain, the first time I landed on what was mostly a water planet. Right. It was pretty cool for me. I think that's what you have to keep in the back of your head. After you play for about five, six, seven hours, you get it. You kind of understand what's happening. Every now and then I'm like yeah, theres this here. The sense of scale Treats you like you are this small, atomic little thing in a gigantic, seemingly endless universe. So for me, that sense of scale They nail it. They nail it. It's so interesting cuz that's like the thing that video games kind of have done recently. I always think of Witcher as the largest game world I've ever experienced where, all the sudden, you're in this other island that's huge. And some dudes went out and made all of that by hand. Every little turn on the trail as you're riding along and And even the DLC is gigantic on that game. Right. And it's so big that I still haven't explored every part of it, and I'm wondering, and it seems like every time you go it's something new and different. With this, it's obviously infinitely basically. Yeah, it's essentially infinite. And when you look at something like "The Witcher," you're right. Every square inch of that map was drawn. Yeah. And rendered. And put together. And preconceived. And it's gigantic. And it's gigantic. where no man's sky, it is sort of just like here is this blender we have, let's stop it and see where it stops. And that is kind of like the best way that I can explain it. Harold is wondering if you guys think if it would be too taxing on PC's which Yortov discovered, do you think it was taxing when you were playing on PS4? There's a couple of times when you can hit some pretty significant frame rate dips PC, it's gonna be fine, it's gonna be fine. It's not, you know it taxes the PS4 hardware and I think at points you're like " okay". Maybe Neo would do a better job of no mans sky but I don't think The way to think about it is like, this is gonna run super-smooth on PC either. I don't think the ecology within the game is open to variable improvements just based on the hardware running it. I don't know, that's the vibe we get. There's a lot of texture drawing that you'll probably wind up seeing In the PS4 version that maybe you won't see in the PC stuff, we don't know that. [UNKNOWN] usually, the PC release, there's gonna be bugs. Sure, and there's bugs in the PS4 version. Exactly, so I'm not expecting a totally smooth weekend, because obviously there's a huge day zero patch, which I think is baked into the scene. It's definitely baked into the scene So like I won't have to worry about that. But it's still not I don't think gonna smooth experience, and I don't expect most [INAUDIBLE] games to ge perfect. Yeah. It's always passion, so. I'm definitely curious to hear what you're saying Monday morning for sure. Yeah. There's a few people asking about availability for the game. They are wondering about If it was available on an early access or steam. No. And console. So just PS4, right now. Yes, just PS4 and PC. That's all- It's announced right? Yeah. I would just gonna probably not be a thing. Ouch. Really? Yeah. That's crazy. I couldn't, I remember reading that going live, that's Yeah I dunno, you can infer what you want, maybe Sony paid for some of that development, that's just speculation. Yeah, uh-huh. And Hill followed up, he was wondering if it's essentially a pretty walking sim. No, you're walking for some of it in the beginning, but then it's kind of like a flying sim. Mm-hm. For a lot of the rest of that game. Warping sim. What's that? Warping sense. Warping sense. Warp cells in. Yep. So there's No Man's Sky. Is there anything else or no? Yeah do you guys think it was over hyped? One of the people earlier on the chat was wondering why are we doing so much news about No Man's Sky and it Was a very big, a very big cyber of news this week. But you did it over the course last three years it was over hype [UNKNOWN] what you're playing now. Definitely, everything's over hyped. [LAUGH] So like let's not, it's not exclusive to no man's sky, everything is over hyped. It's the things that Supersede expectations that really are the remarkable things, right? Most things are over hyped [COUGH] Suicide Squad. So I feel like you really have to take it for what it's worth. This game I think is more remarkable that this game had that reaction. And again, like we talked about earlier You can't fault anyone for it. Like, you can't look at the developers and be like, "You guys made something that seemed too cool. You should have talked down your game. I can't believe you did that. You shouldn't have enjoyed the three year roller coaster that was leading up to the release. No. Was it overhyped? Absolutely. So you're saying not game of the year. Here. And I do not believe that will be game of the year. [MUSIC]
