>> I'm being a little rough with this iPhone 3G today, but don't worry, it'll still be in one piece when I'm done with it. That's because it's currently protected by Magellan's Tough Case for iPhone and iPod touch. Now, the Tough Case is shockproof, waterproof, darn near everything-proof case for the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and iPod Touch devices. I've got my hands on a pre-production version of this. Let's take a First Look. The Magellan Tough Case features rubber O-rings that keep out water and dirt and lock shut with a pair of heavy plastic clips. When it's released to the public, the Tough Case will be rated IPX7 waterproof, so it should be able to be submerged in up to one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. Now, we were warned not to attempt such a feat with this pre-production mule, so we'll have to take their word for it. The case features rubber buttons that preserve access to your iPhone's volume, screen lock, and home keys. Audio pass through so you can still make calls, and a clear screen that preserves the functionality of the iPhone's touch panel. There are also mini-USB port and headphone jacks that are protected with rubber flaps. That's it for the Tough Case's passive features, but behind the installed iPhone is a master power switch that activates the active features. The case features a battery extender that charges by a mini-USB and doubles the iPhone's expected battery life, and a SurfStar 3 GPS receiver that adds location awareness to a connected iPod Touch or enhances the iPhone's accuracy to within three meters. Magellan's hoping that enough users who want to use their iPhone for hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities will see enough value in this device to justify the $199.00 MSRP. We see it like this; if the Magellan Touch Case saves your iPhone from just one serious drop, it's already paid for itself.
