CNET First Look
Lenovo ThinkPad T420Boring is beautiful: Lenovo's straight-up business laptop has some features that are hard to find anywhere else, and a few we're not as fond of.
I'm Scott Stein, Senior Editor of CNET.com and these are the three reasons you would wanna get the Lenovo ThinkPad T420. This big, thousand dollar range, business laptop is pretty bulky, but you may wanna get it for these features. One, the Track Point. Yes, I said Track Point. Why not? If you're gonna buy one of these laptops, you mind as well live with and desire this red rubberized knob that been on ThinkPads forever. It's actually pretty accurate if you're in close quarters. But it has none of the multi-gesture capabilities, they're used too on a large track pad and accessing it gets a little tricky with the letters, but if you are a Track Point (fetishes?), there you go. Two, ports. This laptop comes stacked with the type of Legacy Ports, you don't normally get another laptops. We're talking (eSatt?), we're talking FireWire and we're talking Express Card. We don't have USB 3.0 or HTMI on here. So, if you want sign more modern, you're gonna be up the creek. Three, battery life. With a 9-Cell Battery, this thing lasts over 7 hours on our test, that's tremendous and it lasted longer than the 15-inch Macbook Pro. It's a beast, as far as usability and durability, but it is thick. Now the true reasons not to get it. One, you like a sexy looking laptop. This thing is ugly-looking. I mean, no offense. This is a sort of thing you find in the IT Department. It's not designed to look attractive. It's designed to be a business laptop. It was supposed to be comfortable like an Orthotic shoe. Now, you've seen this design for years, so let's not pretend it. It's something new and interesting. But under the hood, it does have the specs to hold up. And two, you like big track pads. Let's face it. It is not a very big track pads. It's really comfortable and very exact in its responsive, but it's smaller than others, and it's (crempt?) by not just those 2 buttons on the bottom, but these 2 huge buttons on the top, they work for the track point. They're being wedged in by buttons everywhere. On the other hand, if you're looking for a business laptop, and you love ThinkPads. Well, this is that mainstream, down the middle line type of laptop for you. I'm Scott Stein, and this is the Lenovo ThinkPad T420. Boring perhaps, but effective.
