>> [Dan Ackerman:] I'm Dan Ackerman, and we are here today with the Lenovo ThinkPad T400S. Now we've seen the T400S before. It's S for slim, because it's a little bit slimmer than Lenovo's average 14-inch laptop. What's new about this version is, one, it's the first laptop that we've gotten with Windows 7 preinstalled -- Windows 7 Professional in this case -- and second, they've added a multi-touch touch screen to this system, so instead of just using the touchpad or mouse, you can use your fingers right on the screen. Now of course, this is a ThinkPad. If you're familiar with their keyboard and their large touchpad and their little pointy stick, you're not going to find a lot of new stuff here. One thing they did that's very clever is they make the delete and escape keys very large. They say this is based on user feedback, and if you're sitting there typing all day, that might be something that you actually find very useful. And of course Lenovo is well known for all its security and systems software; they call that package ThinkVantage, and you can get to all that just by hitting this blue button right there on the keyboard. So this is your first experience with Windows 7. You know what, if you're familiar with Windows Vista, it's actually pretty similar. XP, it's a little more of a jump. Possibly the two or three most notable things are if you group stuff together in the task bar down here, you're going to see there when you hover over, let's say, our Firefox icon -- there you go, it gives you thumbnails of each of the pages you're on. And if you hover over the thumbnails, then it gives you a full-screen preview. And you may be asking yourself, "What happened to the 'show desktop' button? That's not there anymore." Well, they've actually moved it all the way over to the right side to the very end of the system tray. Even more interesting than that is the new multi-touch display on the T400S. Now Windows 7 is a very touch-friendly operating system, has a lot of touch support built into its back end. Lenovo has its own custom software interface for touch. It's called SimpleTap and you get to it just by tapping on this little red button that's right here on the side of the screen. And that brings up a series of button-like icons that you can use to control all kinds of system functions, things like the screen brightness: you can have it up, you can slide it down, slide it back up. Or you can put the system to sleep or turn your WIFI antenna off and on. Or you can even add your own icons. We added this one for Firefox right here. And you can take these and you can drag them anywhere that you want. They actually kind of bounce around. You want them to line up again, you just tap up there. Now chances are if you're getting a ThinkPad, it's probably going to come from your corporate IT department rather than you just going out and getting it for yourself. So keep that in mind if you're interested in the touch screen display, because everyone's cutting costs these days and that adds about 400 dollars to the system price, driving the T400S well over the 2000-dollar mark.
