CNET First Look
Lacie's Thunderbolt 3 RAID systems are staggeringly fastCNET's Dong Ngo tells us what really matters with the superfast and massive Thunderbolt 3 storage systems, the 6big and 12big, from LaCie.
Hi guys, this is the 12big Thunderbolt 3 from LaCie for a professional. Now, just look at the size here, you know that this is a serious storage system. This is a first I've ever seen for consumers that come with 12 hard drives on the inside. That's right, you can have up to 120 terabyte storage space. And this particular one here, comes with 8 terabyte hard drives, so it. Offer a 96 TB, that's crazy capacity. And by the way, the system uses Seagate Enterprise NAS hard drives which are supposed to be very fast. Now you can remove this drive very easily in case you want to replace System. In fact, it's kind of too easy, and there's no way to lock them in place to prevent an accidental pull out. Which is dangerous when they system is in operation. Also, the system is very heavy and is quite tall. So make sure you do not topple it on anything or anyone. And by the way, this is the power and status indicator. When it's blue, everything is going well. Now you can combine all these drives here in all different RAID configuration you can think of. Like RAID-0, RAID-1, RAID-5, 6, 10, and 50. The system is preconfigured in RAID-5, but can [UNKNOWN] the rate very fast, using [UNKNOWN] software. You can also use the software to mark the system And perform other tasks such as upgrading the firmware. Now this one is the very first Thunderbolt 3 system I ever tested. And it comes with two Thunderbolt 3 port on the back here. And that means you can daisy chain another Thunderbolt 3 device to this one like a module or another storage device. You also have a USB 3.1 type C port here to host a [UNKNOWN] drive like this one. Now in testing with Thunderbolt three the system [UNKNOWN] extremely fast with a sustained [UNKNOWN] copy speed of some 14 hundred megabytes per second, that means you can transfer There's a whole DVD worth of content in less than three seconds. That's crazy fast. So basically this is an ultimate source system for professional if you can afford it. It's very expensive. It starts at $6400 for 48 terabytes. Now if you want something similar but more affordable there is this 6big Thunderbolt 3 system right here. Is basically half of the [UNKNOWN]. Half the amount of drive, so half capacity. Also half the physical size, and half the price. Starting as $3200, for 24 terabyte. A few things remain the same though. Now the 6Big system here share this Same feature, the same setting, the same software as the 12big, and it's performance is very similar, just a tad slower. That's why the 6big is meant to be a lesser product. Actually, I find it better cuz it has great balance of cost, performance, and design. And that means in most cases the 6 beak here it will give you very similar if not the same experience as that of the 12 beak but as much much less of a cost. Most importantly, the size of the, Ball remains the same. And for many of you out there, I know that's all that matters. And that's because I'm the [UNKNOWN] and these are the [UNKNOWN] system from [UNKNOWN].
