If you're upgrading to iOS 10 or trading up to a new phone, here are two ways to backup an iPhone.
Connect the iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes if it doesn't automatically start.
Click the phone icon in the upper left corner to bring up this summary screen.
Underneath the back Up's option, select back up now.
You can also select to automatically sync the phone when it's plugged in.
To set up encryption to the backup, select the box.
This will carry over keychain information like password and help step data if you ever need to restore the phone.
The second backup method is iCloud.
With your phone on WiFi, go to the settings icon, then iCloud.
Select the iCloud Backup bubble, then press Back Up Now.
To restore from an iTunes backup, select the option in iTunes.
From iCloud first reset the phone, then choose the Restore from iCloud Backup option when setting up your device.
