Get well soon, Steve!
Hi, I'm Molly Wood, and welcome to the Buzz Report! This week ?
The Gadget of the Week is the Palm Pre. It stole the show at CES last week, as you know, by
giving us a glimpse of the future of Palm and a new way for smart phones to work.
Ok, Palm. You had your moment in the sun and now only two questions matter: when, and how
much. Get it out the door or else it doesn?t count.
Ok, now for the news. A health and technology bombshell! Steve Jobs announced
Wednesday that he would be taking a five-month medical leave from Apple. He said
his health problems were more complex than he initially thought, and that ?curiosity?
over his health had become a huge distraction to him, his family, and to Apple. And
since he?s obviously taking a dig at the media about constantly discussing his health
? I thought we?d take the high road here at the Buzz.
Take it easy, Stevie. Get better soon.
Moving on to the FORMERLY biggest news of the week, former Autodesk CEO Carol
Bartz will be the new CEO of Yahoo, replacing Jerry Yang. He will remain as ?chief
Yahoo.? Bartz is a widely respected executive who tripled Autodesk?s revenue during
her 14-year tenure and is one of the most respected CEOs in the world. Plus, from
what I hear, she does not insist on referring to herself as a "chief Yahoo," and
probably uses capital letters in formal communications with her staff.
In sum, a grownup! Good choice!
I have some sad Internet news to report. Twitter is ruined. According to Internet
sources everywhere, the microblogging tool is overrun with celebrities. They range
from Jimmy Fallon to Britney Spears to MC Hammer to Greg Grunberg of ?Heroes,?
to ? someone who?s probably not really Tina Fey ? there are so many that some
enterprising developer has even created celebritytweet.com just to let you know
who?s who on Twitter. Of course, half the celebrities who are supposedly on Twitter
are probably fake, and the other half ? aside from Jimmy and Greg and Hammer ?
don?t have much to say. Plus, you know. This is OUR club, geek wannabees! Get
your Uggs and your paparazzi OUT of here.
Unless you have any cool parties you want to invite us to.
And finally, let?s have a look at what?s Clogging the Tubes.
This week, it's Let Me Google That For You ... dot com. It's the site for all those
people who ask you questions about things they could just look up, such as, "when
does Battlestar Galactica come back on," or, "where is the closest post office?"
Especially if it's like, your cube-mate, or someone who EMAILS you or Twitters you
with one of these questions. You just say, sure, let me send you the link. Then, go to
"letmegooglethatforyou.com" type in your search, and send them the link the site
gives you. Check it out.
Ohoho, burn. Because thanks to technology, we don't HAVE to help other people. We
just get to make fun of them. Ahh, Internet. You're so bitchy.
I'm Molly Wood and thanks for watching.
