-If you're shopping for a workhorse printer for a small office, this Editor's Choice can do high quality prints, rapid text, not to mention a handful of features designed to increase your work flow.
I'm Justin Yu, Associate Editor for CNET.com.
This is your first look at the Epson WorkForce 840 all-in-one printer.
The 840 is the
flagship model of Epson's all-in-one inkjet line and while it may cost more than the average multi-function, it also serves up useful features like Ethernet and Wi-Fi networking, double-sided printing, an auto document feeder, and mobile printing from your smartphone.
The first thing you'll notice about the Epson WorkForce 840 is its size.
So, be sure you have enough desktop real estate to handle this thing before you buy it 'cause it weighs 22 pounds and is around 18 inches wide mostly due to the dual 250-sheet paper input trays on the bottom and this 30-sheet auto document feeder on top.
The feeder makes it easy to scan or copy stacks of documents hands free.
You'll also find this 13-inch wide control
panel just above the paper output tray and this display is where you'll go to setup a wireless connection with your computer, interact with the menus, and connect to iPrint (that's Epson's mobile software that lets you print photos directly off your iPhone).
But if you don't have a smartphone, you can also print pictures from the media card reader on the bottom left here.
The WorkForce 840 also turned in strong performance scores on all of our output speed tests, pumping out about 12-1/2 pages of all black text per minute.
It also edged out the competition printing PowerPoint slides at just under 7 pages per minute, but lagged a bit in snapshot photos.
So, it's not the fastest photo printer but all in all, the Epson WorkForce 840 delivers in all other jobs.
We're pleased to award this multi-function inkjet an Editor's Choice award for its high quality prints, rapid text and graphics speed, easy to navigate control panel, and a bundle of features you get for a relatively affordable price tag.
