Today it's Tuesday August ninth 2011 my name is Steve --
I am Bryan song and.
I am Hollywood.
Welcome to about that allowed -- and I guess interlinked that -- that it into is that what are you gonna say I just wanted to welcome all of our -- -- owners.
Or brownies audience -- is I think I don't having it out but on brownies.
We just learned about brownie -- the before the show.
Google at American dictionary aired. Buzz out loud your tech podcast -- -- feeding fetish is left and right.
My little -- people.
These dot. Ubisoft ferries -- weird. I think -- -- -- either.
So yeah just to check it out when I'm gonna talk about anymore and -- they're really it's the reason why you come live chat before the show the pre show that starts at 1030 via.
We learn things with --
Just trust me on this one it's almost like a little bit of a sweepstakes flaky comes alive chatting you.
You learn things you never knew used it it also though if it -- kids maybe.
That you keep aroma or in them -- on people yeah yeah that -- anyway my little pony turns out there's that thing about that.
Engineers. To the story is of the things they wanna learn they really -- yes definitely although frankly I I think.
At some point you're gonna be at a party you're gonna get to impress someone with your newfound knowledge about --
I know I'm looking -- arsenic and I -- party Agha TO total birds that every line.
-- -- -- --
Serious news actually obviously the London riots continue. To go on there is -- has been -- in London after. A young man with.
Killed by police yet during a tab tab pull over -- and his death sparked this. Uprising -- a little bit.
I don't wanna say eighteen Hanks but it seems like it's a lot of the disenfranchised. Use or frustrated use that are specifically taking part.
In these riots and really destroying their city which makes absolute sense.
Yet I know that's the frustrating thing right is it always it's always an expression of relatively legitimate anger there's like -- their socioeconomic issues happening in this Tottenham.
Region. But yet it's it has become as -- so often does unfortunately does wanton.
Across London burning -- you know I mean it's just a it's a disaster at all blown riot.
And what's really interesting is that the police had been trying to figure out why because obviously.
In this day named whenever there's some kind of -- Movement like this in the instinct is okay what happening on social media.
And what they found was that on the usual suspect places like FaceBook and Twitter.
You're mainly they were mainly does seem like reporting or pictures of what was going on and none of the kind of like group gathering.
Of things that we're going on a huge their -- -- now there's video now actually the Steve just pulled up a huge fired at Sony distribution center in and field spread way beyond Tottenham.
And it's now have a -- relates to -- -- really copycat.
Try -- vandalism happening around the country -- totally fascinating is that it appeared to have been coordinated in large part.
Over Blackberry messenger.
Surprisingly I had no idea that it was apparently the Blackberry is used by 37%. Of of --
London youth it's the favored method of communication.
We've -- no rim still has a market that's alive and currently thriving now on -- own Blackberry blog they were recently hacked.
After reports that Blackberry or rim would be cooperating with police over the riots.
And -- based on requests from the police they would be providing them with information they didn't get into specifics of what exactly but they're trying to find the source of the problem.
Who these organizes were what messages were sent in those areas and the prom with that is personal their blog was hacked because.
On them because they aren't happy about that Blackberry working with the -- in that manner but at the same time if you're in that area.
And you may have been -- -- or not even partaking in any of these rights and you sent a message -- -- Francine I need to get out of here.
That there's a record of that there's a log of that.
And some of this information as the police are just looking to sweep -- find whoever was part is they need in that area -- like brazenly turned over that's.
Are there laws against is giving up that private information and it you know been taken in by the police because of that.
A adding Blackberry -- like rim unfortunately -- be compelled legally to send in at least according to some of these stories can be compelled to send turn over a lot.
Because they think that you know they might be able to find people who.
Who were inciting this behavior.
But -- it it.
As usual it you know it is it's just the worst possible thing that can happen or am right now because.
They have a legal obligation to turn over some information.
There's no question that there are probably people who are messaging especially that many people use it and there are probably people who -- messaging things like oh yeah go for -- who were not participating.
And so that -- that is like a nightmare in terms of privacy and potential false accusations.
And -- you know that rim right now just like really really and we do not need it for you not need this.
But yeah I mean as far as I understand. The authorities have the right to ask for this information but it.
It's a bad seem.
Now is what it is it a bad -- -- as bad timing for ram but apparently the right now and their web site is offline.
They had like.
Digg because they've been hacked without blog -- now the entire black -- -- apparently has been taken off line.
-- somewhere right now over 500 people had been brought in a custody there there are -- local facilities are being filled.
So much because he's right to their -- in them another place I mean it's.
It's getting ugly like He said there's copycat.
Criminal vandalism that's happening in writing in other areas now.
But the tackling is your surprisingly enough you -- dead there was also mentioned some the articles of --
Authorities were. Upset that people were posting misinformation.
About the rights on FaceBook and -- now Blackberry with the -- vehicle that was used to.
Allegedly organize -- and he's right yet -- needed.
But FaceBook and Twitter.
They were looking to seek out users who are posting information about the rights that might have been inaccurate as well gee that's a -- that's that's -- -- that's -- and a -- you know.
Is that when you have things like this.
Facts are always kind of lost in the shuffle and there's different streams of information points but if you're going after people another posting on FaceBook and Twitter and that happens -- miss information about it.
And -- -- go looking to target them as well.
-- -- -- --
And -- just gonna make you more angry. At your eye ear and ability to understand their needs and other tests it attempt.
Also good times Amazon's -- a bad press that they just don't need right now Amazon's ET ET TU web service had.
Yet another outage last night which again took down several high traffic web sites.
And yet put toward another black -- really on those services. Glitzy core -- -- Graham foursquare and several other -- apparently.
Were hit by the outage it was pretty short but at this point Amazon has just.
It's -- there are so many high profile website that are on -- and especially like high profile in the tech community so they see these sites and and night and this program is.
Dour and how I -- and --
The outage was reported on the first on the -- service health dashboard it lasted approximately.
Around twenty minutes 7:39 PM it was resolved as of 803 PM.
And under -- little existing -- it did the outage did occur at the same facility.
Where was that there was that earlier outage -- -- the same location they didn't Amazon and release any details of what.
The extent was what the actual issue was but they were at least able to.
Jump on and fix -- in about twenty minutes which is pretty fast -- have you know someone must have just press the enter button.
And it happen if that's the --
-- -- that Internet now coming back online there there's like a funny Twitter stream about the easy -- -- I mean basically everyone was so.
Don't like them had PT SD from the last time that it went down to the assembly Tuesday at canal so people. Atlas.
-- -- --
-- company -- web -- -- down for you know at a time for two full days during the last those -- that last when it took out Netflix.
This both outages Netflix was having problems then.
And so it's it was unbelievable because the Twitter stream and related to it was just like and and apparently they say it might have been because of a lightning strike.
An easy to.
Where a guy tripped over an ethernet cable or guide to Germany and implement -- -- would you say lightning strike.
Totally and that's solar storm that's -- -- that's solar panel that's coming in Italy -- of that He connected old totally right I would say that's Italy and I'll buy things which I would say you know what Amazon He deftly monies that solar storm.
We got it -- at.
I -- domestic event so in Africa and then.
Students who don't.
Let's take a great regularly come back.
Bad news with -- the Samsung Galaxy Tab I have -- mango update and the best use it with the black and I think we've ever.
-- presenter this is sexy and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
I'm currently in Sao Paulo Brazil and in Europe -- apart when I'm on the -- I listen to buzz out -- only on cnet.com.
Why cafe eight.
Video video I love it.
-- -- --
Yes Brad was made even when -- do that I wanted somebody do that in Wellington those super -- you gotta have you so much love -- said Allen -- awesome and the great work on the technical sites.
As usual was and then go through Cleveland to Ottawa whatever Cuban government -- -- -- in order to do whatever -- tells me out.
Alright guys back -- stories -- Molly Wood in the house -- beat -- run in his magic with this thing years.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab at some point one has now been blocked.
In Europe it'll have to be removed from spur sales across Europe following a judgment in a German court now it launched last week in -- and was the fastest selling tablet since the iPad to.
When it launched but again.
We know -- Samsung and going back and forth the regional court of docile -- has granted Apple preliminary injunction against the sale and marketing of the Galaxy Tab.
Temple and across all of Europe and all of Europe except the Netherlands.
It is possible to apply for a pan European injunction in any country which if upheld ladies and covers all I had no idea -- -- I think it is go to court in Germany and get an -- UEU wide injunction.
The judge backed Apple's claim.
That the tablet and some friends sometimes and copied alum and so the iPad Lima as well I'll tell including exactly how it looks. Feels I mean -- -- -- have you seen that thing.
It's cuts and let the consumers decide well yes definitely however an Apple spokesman said it's no coincidence. So -- we incidents.
That Samsung's latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad in the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging.
This kind of blatant copying is -- that's right we need to protect Apple's intellectual property -- companies steal our ideas.
You know because my dad who are now my dad -- portly body an iPhone this -- -- -- I told him.
Don't buy an iPhone four as it's come -- an excellent product and on the next month and -- -- adult.
But He had to do -- for work He -- mistake.
A Samsung galaxy too far and I -- for.
I have to say I think any -- at this point in the game it considering especially like how long tablet designed have been around or whatever does that there'd be like.
It looks is really cozy -- you.
Food the packaging of the acreage computers.
It's so baby.
Baby so Apple anyway.
Sorry cannot get its -- and -- in.
The -- right now hopefully that will not -- though is their fastest selling one in Britain and -- like you know you can't -- that anymore that's all momentum that you have built up now.
And way to compete in this market and our right it's not like you're not killing. -- cannot absolutely crushing.
The tablet market yet and it like elements like --
The package these is they should go after the HD touch -- looks more like an -- burst and its USA. Via.
I just don't I don't know what to do about we give it the I understand that the patents are enforceable by love with patents -- read.
John Strickland says dad can you imagine if laptops were held to the same standards -- portable computer pulled up that violates her intellectual property.
The screen on this laptop is the same size as.
I -- really like you're talking about drug design similarity is that have propagated across entire industries will this phone looks like well I'm sorry canceled at the EU.
Mean it just feels like it's gotten it's just a little over the top.
But only guys already know -- we've -- you -- I don't know Italy here's an -- identity and identity and --
Interesting. High aiming on this next bit of news.
Microsoft's general manager of Windows Phone who has been with the company for 21. Years.
Is leaving. To launch a start up.
That's not the most unusual information -- -- -- -- -- to want to start up but He has been -- -- -- -- years and they say it's kind of interesting timing because.
Microsoft's challenges with Windows Phone are obviously.
More extreme right now sales of apparently fallen sharply.
Or at least its overall share of mobile phones sales has -- -- labor standard and Google and -- -- literally just gearing up.
For mango which is due out this.
And now Windows Phone Jim Charlie Kindle is name He left.
T He was his main after it was also to get independent app developers on the Windows Phone -- platform which does it I would say is mildly successful I would say it's a failure.
What the platform yet distinct I don't they -- a lot of the -- lot of the apps at least on board that we would expect -- you know like the Netflix and.
-- I think if anything.
It actually doesn't make that much it's not back confusing because if you think about it.
What they've they have completed mango -- we haven't seen -- yet the work -- not mean it's not available to the consumer yet until this ball.
But -- and done and that was.
Arguably -- this is it is they're launching point for the next generation of Windows Phone this is I think the point at which you can say they're serious about it.
So if He was going to step away I guess it's.
It's -- now you know and -- he's like the article says 21 years.
I know files working somewhere for when you're years -- -- -- -- I might wanna try to do something no matter what it is him bottom line so and a big time.
Someone of the -- -- -- the may birth the baby and then get out and at least that's partly what He -- but -- weighing.
Hopefully it's not -- like a really wanna publish -- that it is that timing and that hopefully it doesn't sound like the wrong message you know about windows on but I don't think it doesn't mean He.
He really went out with them with really strong and positive comments about it -- and -- you know that.
You might use a Microsoft product that is not there anymore but He iPad is always in use windows and depth look at you know we'd certainly like -- that emit gamma active --
-- the iPhone five coming out fairly Kindle I also I posted my speed -- manga post my first blog posts.
Of the Windows Phone 7 challenge weak line.
You can find that out at cnet.com slash Molly rant.
Dot com slash migrants just and I -- -- at a benefit.
-- mainly though this first -- and there weren't that many impressions they literally just activated the phone last night and started doing some set up.
This is more it it turned into I was surprised when I started going through my history of Android.
Experiences. And how -- negative -- it.
I was like well I haven't had a very -- -- -- seeming as in your your post as you -- setting missing out your just recalling some of those fond memories you've had data literally -- robot guy like I was with the Droid which now its announcement the Samsung went to have every -- take back imminent that are -- and -- -- -- -- -- is the first -- next and work -- -- -- --
So anyway and now I'm using these Samsung that site HTC trophy.
Which is the only Windows Phone 7 resident and attorney developers build of mango.
And I I had it in a few issues on set up -- -- confusing but seemed to be resolved so now I'm actually like and using it.
We're gonna shoot a video today with some of the first impressions and don't worry every -- I am gonna -- -- Zune -- mainly because the spot by app is not available.
But maybe Charlie Kindle to work --
Government you've gone over it literally like --
-- and today it's really pretty.
When in the wild in the elevator NASA Gatling what do you think -- -- the phone it does cool stuff about it yeah they're -- not the guy wanted to talk to an hour -- it back.
Is my phone are -- for now the target building and see it's a building and handle a little bit more about your own instant technology enthusiasm --
Stat I was annoyed to discover that I can link my FaceBook account but I couldn't.
I couldn't search the Twitter social integration with the phone until I had -- windows live account established policy have to -- a lot of Italy titled windows live via.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
I love -- I love how other apps are laid -- -- that three -- set up.
And a slight page to page on some apps do you like that -- not Nigeria at least religious vanity it's pretty it really is and we'll see how functional it turns out to be.
I didn't bring it into the room today I don't like them to let them.
But what you --
We'll watch for the video it -- and we.
The alert was pretty pretty little -- but I love it or not.
-- -- neither a little pretty anyways so check out keep banana but -- three -- to media today will only be periodic updates don't wanna.
Also it's a follow up of our story about Defcon in the youth.
The next generation of hackers coming to a theater near you.
There were roughly sixty young hacker wannabes. They -- wannabes -- 816 and one of them.
Going by the handle of site by with a ten year old -- out.
And one of the Defcon kids co founders from California.
Says she presented her findings -- -- on.
On an exploit in an unnamed social -- -- -- want to expose the game.
Which is tinkering with the code after really being annoyed by its games slow pace and He found that by -- her life by -- the clock.
-- and small increments she -- fast forward many of the actions in the game and called it a new class of vulnerabilities dubbed.
Tying traveler I was out a zero day exploit -- He could tweak with a clock.
And then have time passed and maybe what she wanna do far more pumpkins.
I wonder what type of games involve -- mean.
Well in its -- right Zealand notice yet -- big -- in cheat at games that we haven't also potentially -- something totally unpalatable and other apps and a its solaris that you like ten years old friends -- tent and --
A girl scout.
We elect that related to the girl scout isn't does not a conflict of interest a girl scout and a hacker controllers -- -- she also -- the coolest hacker sites.
I don't see why. I don't I thought I was since the clever -- did -- lose two point yup.
Syrian hackers are apparently this is.
Hilarious that they didn't do not hear about this very much so you know anonymous obviously.
They had taken down in deepest Syria's ministry of defense website.
Well after they take credit for that than Syrian hackers would not have -- it.
And they retaliated. By deep -- being a non plus the anonymous social network yeah.
I ran up a fight -- how whopping apparently posted gruesome photos which is not so cool but they said in response to your hacking to the website of the Syrian ministry of defense the Syrian people.
I decided to secure by the Internet of your static web sites.
You know -- the new official honey -- the Internet Syria Syria a.
Oh yeah I don't give --
As nasty -- you don't don't don't give -- did the honey badger they've put a nasty accident and opens a candidate lose -- can crawl through tight spaces.
Download is denied -- -- -- like they had visited the areas.
Although I have day I don't know how good those hackers are I just got out and maybe they're awesome and I just got this experience like.
-- take forever slow burn.
Syria is. It sorry that's a Goliath -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- that a -- what does not actually been a real.
The property of anonymous now I have to go find out -- and -- not that anyway exterior and anonymous are a big huge Bible of the Republican about.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
Now -- probably our most amazing story today.
Chinese smugglers. Have taken -- zip lines only Lolita goes zip line in and colliding go to zip lining in.
A lot of exotic places as does the plan and the important narrow mandate that -- -- allow plan Chinese -- uses zip line to get Apple goods.
In -- there -- country.
So what they did is they this is the most amazing part out -- across international borders right they moved them from the board of Hong Kong into Shenzhen.
And a lot times there's you know international taxes and trade fees they have to.
Pay when you transfer goods they use the zip line but even better to attach it they shot the line with a crossbow.
Yes cross post straight out our Rambo.
Straight out our Rambo which attacks the zip line and then using these sandbags or sacks they transferred like I pads or something over likes.
40000 dollars worth of ipads and iphones they're --

And they said they were key as part of a major surveillance operations are tied to say how long -- may have opera I answer that's awesome since that time there's the story about those guys are -- hugely turban shaped like catapults you -- today.

And okay so anyway. I'm hungry. Factor -- is modify.
It sounds like maybe it's not light as hard to get spotted by invite a -- we contributed our fair share to the pot bellies and by --
They have already signed a one point four million users for the pre trial and has a 175000. Paying US subscribers.
Less than a month.
After launching here in.

But our neighbors in a -- at twelve point 5% by the -- which -- -- conversion on an abacus we've been of that.

Keep -- distracted and spend sixty dollars --
The movie and music industry's favorite money raising technique appears apparently their rent and little short -- -- to -- -- the fundraising in the form of mass lawsuits.
Mass filing lawsuits editors file sharing positive and -- -- over the US in recent months up to 200000. People in fact.
Have now been sued that is the new milestone.
Almost exclusively. Those users are BitTorrent users -- -- holders embrace the new revenue stream.
That makes him that they reap from suing people and forcing them to --
They gotta do this also -- -- story sometimes we actually do like standard disease and actually do like little button Sony.
And others including Panasonic and -- Panasonic and Samsung are looking a standardized active 3-D glasses.
This is awesome because anyone have to buy 3-D glasses for over a hundred dollars for one says that when you buy your next they have to buy their hundred -- -- they're working together.
In order to treat that are active 3-D -- a standard.
Outstanding. View specially now that serious topic glasses free 3-D is right and her eyes -- becoming a -- -- plus seven app it's now available for the iPad.

Selling user -- to third parties is this true if so.
I would think that a lot of people would closer council November 4 bracing themselves for the attack this is a good idea I mean how exposed with -- users like myself be.

Although I don't keep.
No more damaging than anything a favorite of depression out --
Whom let's see bullying are acts Rodin and -- Molly hood -- thought I would share this interest in technology or --
Added Jay-Z and Kanye keep the biggest album of the year from linking kind of wrenching story -- does -- what they apparently did was they never pressed any CD --
They only did -- digital released and then they never would email each other any tracks or anything they just kind of like did a sneaker net album.
And then because apparently. Album leaks are usually due to stolen and then -- CDs.
And so lyrics is its doctor Kyle alright doctor -- -- this is ninja and who really.
The is that He just heard that radio people are -- -- on his most recent antics in England but pioneered at the album and -- -- when -- heard about the sport report -- nothing leaked on the net may -- it's an emerging trend.
In the industry you give up being able to promote your album before it comes on the radio stations and viral video sites but the opposite approach to -- to build hype by holding cards -- -- --
-- -- Apple model of music now watch the thrown its. And when you see album on it's only available right now on the iTunes store.
At the moment it was exclusively solely X exclusively release a little earlier on Apple's iTunes but on interesting -- -- there's some hot tracks in -- but.
Overall on the better the models actually -- the models really cool again.
It's why you can get away without when you're a big name -- rate when you don't need.
The publicity you can get away with doing that must members' machines as they also allegedly gave their engineers -- a Rolex in return for not leaking their tracks which yes.
I definitely -- -- the people who work in Korea and many I wonder Apple gonna sue them for infringing on their model.
You know -- there were smarter about the Rolex it was just like a sign nondisclosure agreement that no one listens to or -- that there.
Our ideas on -- -- -- from Jack W -- W in the chat -- a regular a buzz -- I think would -- a 182 did with the YouTube video remixing is perfectly warranted.
Regardless of what you think.
Copyright law is in fact just that a law whenever you upload a video to YouTube school warned you -- not include music that you don't have the rights to.
But these people decided to go ahead and do that anyways thus it Blink-182 wanted to.
They could assume these home movie makers into -- Bolivia and got away with it instead they're giving them fifteen minutes of fame also pointed out that they made a small mistake if anything.
Blink-182 let these copyright violators get up a bit easier -- they could have the parting with AT&T does look pretty.
In the video you Selig.
All the copper laws that are actually in the -- -- obvious. That.
So it's passive aggressive -- the idea though we agree on that yeah but the duplicated here than being an area.
And then finally upon the digital asset manager -- -- says I have -- well addition to comment about the solar explosions happening on the sun.
An episode 1526 and recently attended a conference bugs and the preservation of media including people from the public and private sectors.
The moderator brought -- the Carrington event of 1895 that we talked about where -- and the telegraph machines kept going even though they were.

After making every archive -- in the room -- in their pants his.
The speaker -- to start up tech any tech company that is creating an optical tape medium that would be impervious to the effects of the coronal mass ejection.
Alt plus a -- has times giggling.
Needless to say there is both true and a profit motive and his doomsday scenario but if we do lose the solar lottery.
And if there aren't occurrences -- re animated corpses dot -- heating of the -- scorer rapture.
Howard just without electronic devices then let me be the first -- my allegiance to the -- -- king.

It also makes.
I didn't really know that like a giant EMP was.
At a time and really thought about the win and if there but I did just don't panic everyone -- -- -- TBS news about how there was the biggest solar flare in years is that just erupted on the sun.
The largest one yet in the sun's -- current cycle but we're gonna be okay because it was based in the other way.
Not -- Amazon uses use.
And use it as an excuse for their servers going to go yet to lose -- good point actually -- and uses. It.
