Ep. 1382: Molly touches Nintendo's 3DS

Culture
-- -- January 6 2000. -- I am -- on I am Molly Wood and welcome to buzz out outlook but broadcast of its opening day CES 2011 opening day and then that we are doing the meanest thing in the world right now I know because everyone is lined up. Right behind us. The doors waiting to get into ES and they're not opening sample -- Until ten today but there awaiting it comes -- your show actually well they are now because they think it'd there's as -- release are old enough not. It -- episode -- out there and 82. It is -- -- opening game and we are actually it is right this -- happening as we speak. Verizon's. Keynotes. Is about to start -- beat the united after he's been looking forward to -- we're not gonna -- you live. Like we have like we did all yesterday -- -- press conference but we argument if you like mystery science theater burned in little commentary and updates -- with what's happening there as well that will keep an eye on it and if you don't know what is going on and -- just waiting to see us live stream. We are sitting at -- day all day every here I am. The roaming the Fuller lives but we will be live all day everyday. You're at the CNET -- in the south hall. Of the last statement that are bringing you all the highlights from doing day long live streaming out. Press conferences -- that yesterday we write every single one of the. Press conferences that was going on yeah I'll also be doing -- its looks from the floor so all the gadgets and gizmos you guys expect to see your want to see. Will be covering those will be having product demos up here you'll be here doing some of those and then now we have a little live stream backpack where today is the first day of CS where everyone will be here so. Yes it worked just fine and dandy. App that I am I could ask everyone to turn off their cell phones to make sure it works out does not give us some bad -- something up here like mine but worried we're gonna crossed fingers and will be coming you from the floor in different locations so you guys get a real sense of how crazy it is. Out there are so the we'll see what happened is pretty. -- the live alive -- correspondent thing from the floor and is epic and then of course we're bringing you buzz out loud every day at 9 am Pacific. With apologies to the people who are hoping to get it -- the and a local. -- -- alleged incident is the Verizon keynote has not yet begun. It looks like they have three minutes left -- a -- down on that I'm gonna be looking over here to my left of this where we actually have a live stream up and running. And -- we hopeful we hope that. Some interesting news to come out -- -- definitely expecting a ton of LTE news. Has that has been kind of the big deal. We're also expecting at least -- it sounds like for a new four G smart. Yup from a -- -- one thing that on the LG already did have their keynote. But they said they were going to use later on in the show announce a tablet. They haven't done -- yet and a lot of people are expecting that at this rising keynote. Will -- on the algae tablet been officially announced though at you know tablets galore we've been talking about the moldy we've been showing them -- them off. We were probably gonna be seeing the algae -- -- the rising keynote as well the other thing that people. Our everyone was hoping they'd see but really -- I don't think it's gonna happen is the iPhone for Verizon -- -- Apple's always gonna kind of take care of that themselves that would never. I don't know think they would ever allow another company announced -- them when their hardware products so we probably won't see that here even if you really wanna see it. Not yet an impact they're actually tune Verizon keynote that's sort of one of the confusing things that's happening today. There's one now where -- elected your -- yet there's an hourly expected here like a lot of and news about -- it's not actually that just notice that there are at laptop or receiving the live -- you know is not. Getting power conflicted. That we don't want it to die obviously during -- they -- it when it's gonna. Anyway we expect hears them LT -- LT news but the device news might actually I'm leader at their one okay there's cute you know it's going. -- that the wealthy but we're expecting a boy at least -- new forty's are on and possibly a tablet from -- And so -- kind of talk about a little recap of what else happened so far the news comes are constantly. Every blob while we're talking -- probably news releases and new products -- announcement yesterday. The big keynote probably that stole the show so far with Motorola's my got motor -- the press conference about the -- yesterday they came out hard with all the hardware. Number one everyone is hoping to see the Motorola's new which is their tablet. On the third ten point one inch tablet we got several people got a hands on it was over -- digital experience we both got -- check it out in. I'm you know you you know at -- play with the interface the thing about is the hardware is very sweet very sleek. It's -- -- the design rivals. It's on the iPad level but at Fort -- didn't have any demos -- Wii -- actually navigated it still essentially a prototype they said it was like. Built you know built -- very recently so they should -- -- it is but you could it. Navigate the Ellis at all if anybody honeycomb but -- comes still not obviously publicly available so we were able to see that you can't see demos of it -- -- Videos that show off the interface without actually interacting with it -- I always I'm always going to be you know make my judgement on them once we actually play with them but -- from a hardware standpoint it doesn't really need really act. It's really -- it's absolutely gorgeous like it definitely appears to be the hardware to beat at the show -- been a bunch of different tablet prototypes. Videos. That she does I thought Toshiba looks the most ragged against out of there you know organized with them and they're back and everything that but the Motorola and is the limit EU is likable. Yeah. Yeah it is it'll it'll markets unlike these specs -- -- you know time is the first. Dual core processor -- -- Outright stated that the rep wouldn't tell us exactly which processes are using -- we we would -- has been might be attended to yeah potentially also on. What kind of it's neat thing about is that it'll become standard with three G. What you -- is gonna be up to double to forty you actually have to go to the carrier. And swap out the hardware and get a software update not a radical. Including videos hybrids. -- I said it was not a hybrid chip he said that you have to go to the carrier to get that swapped out but it is still treatable that's kind of a a little subtle -- the point that enough -- that. Yes so the other announcements from Motorola's press conferences with literally just like bam bam bam they started about twenty minutes late and they just. No game demos no extraneous things whatsoever to like hardware hardware hardware hardware. They also announced the big the other big attention getter was the matrix witches of -- -- Smartphone on AT&T. That is -- global. And then powers a laptop the app basically. A laptop shall also like the palm Foleo. And any -- -- a trick that there they're buying a laptop a web top. And it's you know it's -- tegra two dual core machine and it's got you know whatever eleven gigs of ram and six. Gigs -- on board memory and they say why not power a laptop from Google it I mean its its. -- -- -- -- -- No one has really thought about it or pulled it off successfully I think one of the things that comes -- -- how many people although it's cool let's the F that we see a lot of great stuff and cool ideas. How many people actually adopt this -- because once adopted into this kind of laptop -- I mean the whole idea of a user who. Is using and a high -- powered phone typically that use are also wants a high and powered laptop the app and once they played and that docking station it. It's not going to be able to rival what current laptops to do right. And if you just wanna biggest news web through mean all right I could see that but you know from observation that we saw at digital experience when it was thought it did seem to come off. Performance was a little -- I know these are still the -- you know the prototypes not the final product but. I I don't know if it's gonna capital but I still like the idea I -- -- was hot. I don't know I would I -- -- I think what it totally was -- What's cool reference partner I would like any kind of prototype that is the -- -- the most likely but. -- little now -- -- the -- and silently -- the biggest let anybody who is that it was. Kind of enough of a gadget -- -- I totally understand not wanting to be wasteful may be no money to have fifteen million gadgets you know I've -- like. You're right if you're the person it's gonna buy a really high end Smartphone you've probably already -- you -- most importantly hired Apple. Exactly you know if this is gonna be a huge price premium. But either way kind of countless -- through an and it was -- inspired but it's not the iconic acts -- -- The news -- a lot of the attention -- last night now also alarmed Canada recap some others Microsoft at their keynote but it. It -- it it is and that's the news and Microsoft tactic that actually have not -- the dirt around it again the other little -- -- -- it's -- -- -- -- things like I think -- -- -- long -- Potential to -- to -- DR little -- and and the Droid by on it which is a hot news. -- right now they are trying to get back into the game with the -- because I mean. Doug -- -- in an Android phone on Italy but what that galaxy S came out. Samsung pop them in terms of -- itself so the antibiotic is kind of their news super high end. Phone it's a dual core processor they -- that totals to two gigahertz. Hot tub make the ram four point three inch multi touch screen and they're really touting this as kind of a business friendly almost like the successor to the very next. The Motorola has had a really tight relationship with Android and Google and they were basically the flagship phone that really -- Android into the spotlight -- -- kind of understandable to consumers. So not only from the phone sampler that they're doing this year also from getting axed the -- killed when -- -- one of the few. Vendors here that are saying okay we are going to have honeycomb in Q1 right on our device some liberals always been pushing forward with Android platform and you know it's. They're devices typically are very stellar high quality. Now -- -- I am excited about it personally in my mind as that the Droid X you know Big Brother yes right back to Microsoft's. -- -- -- -- -- Now we're really not only of that note it was so I -- Because we spent the whole day going man. Android is alone in the show it's not -- tablet news it's raining tablets at CES. What is Microsoft gonna do are we gonna see the mobile OS demonstration where you know -- the Windows 7 tablet. Auditing our show are about him. -- -- in -- all they talked about -- Microsoft connect. -- -- it was really surprising because okay the announces they showcase off connect first of all they showcase that okay connect. Sold gangbusters eight million in the first -- months now which is great but. The announcements relate to connect with like how you could use connect with Netflix and some other other apps on how connected now show you know. Your avatar can have expressions and -- the -- would move with your voice. Those are announces that you would see yet something like. And the focus was on connect and sure we know like the Xbox is the money -- when of the strong points for Microsoft -- here. It's okay to feature that but at CS you've got a brain. Everything you've got -- I just can't help but feel that whatever they wanted to bring to the table. Might him. Just didn't come through well off and it dropped off because you keep you can't tell -- they came to see is planning to just talk about connect and now as as the showcase centerpiece I totally agree it does everyone brings the best harbor they have. Yes I know you -- your best harder whether it's -- whether it happens but maybe. They they got burned by the whole it brought the tablet last year it did it happen -- have anything they felt. Confident enough that would accommodate you but still -- is there -- -- here. It's been years like how do you not have something you know how do you not have. A tablet version of -- and -- don't know companies get in trouble when they try really hard to follow the -- when they you know when they work. Mainly on. Matching what their competitors are doing and not innovating in aerospace I think you know it's easy it -- -- -- mentality but Microsoft is. Obviously interest in tablets as demonstrated at last year's keynote. So what have they been up -- -- -- and how do you not even bring it up. They sort of vaguely alluded to. A mobile friendly version of windows but didn't have birthday the -- -- And -- talked a little bit about windows on them. -- it was remarkable life I think we always did to the point policy does you know it's not like. They can't do great things irresistible disciplines -- yes yes attended today you know not here to pile on the -- is disappointed -- -- I think that's very generous of you but did -- this urge I just us. To pile on them to bring it in -- nearly -- professional -- now. -- also -- press conference wrap up real quick Sony made. Sony double down three yeah is that three is not oh and I don't care a lot. Of it we edit list it it. We got a chance to take out their -- yesterday before the show actually open and you know. We we had a predictions Hillary talked about what -- see an -- time out okay maybe. -- three TVs but Sony is incorporating three functionality across all of their camera lines. And when I saw I it. At their -- It's just fine yeah like you just have to laugh because it's so cool and they're really going -- -- not only with the Blu-ray players right all -- TVs but for example they had it mounted up. There -- 380 full HD cam corder about the size very consumer friendly. Up on top -- TV and then you can see yourself and you slap on the 3-D glasses and you see yourself in 380 and you're like -- on the camera and you just can't help but like. This is cool yeah like sometimes even if it may not make sense when that cool factor just takes over you and you feel like -- You can follow up with them but it's often that happens -- -- -- guy and so for them to move at least three fort we still don't know how many people will jump on board. Right you know -- -- I think Howard street that there are expected to -- something like. 5000000380. Capable units this year via 2011. One way to do that is to incorporated in all of your consumer electronics and kind of just by herself with the platform -- Right and and that is actually can't just -- -- he met with like you don't necessarily have to have -- ET's mentality have to say mean there's no reason for -- Tuesday. It wasn't adopted. Hugely. This year so we're getting out of the game so you know makes sense but I understand it they -- they airplanes on game three in their waiting for the prices to -- -- -- that people. -- adopted a collective scale I will say I have never seen anything more awkward than. Seth Rogen and -- Did -- count out coming out in the green -- car. Delivering our -- on delivering -- through its -- glasses with three last but and then awkwardly banter. It was agonizing. But now we all know that. -- -- aren't coming out -- Sony also announced that the and you 3-D Blu-ray player the Vaio F series laptop but -- -- 3-D capable. The 3-D -- recorder that you mention. The blogging with 3-D functionality. The treaty found out and they are really it is or off the ride -- across the board no messing around new cyber shots that -- HD video as well as 3-D video users who want to take a little breather. With elaborate I am exhausted as we get some air. Our -- collaborate will be back a little bit. So -- you -- -- a boatload of new ways that you can -- cnet's live and on demand content on devices that you care about. I welcome back to buy out everyone -- -- very excited because it to cut extremely well timed break -- how. We are back with Reggie needs it may president of Nintendo America thinking that there's little. Read you something in my hand here and Elena and spent the pleasantries that -- I. Have to take it back that when we're gonna. I'm gonna guess this is -- -- -- yes we are here showing it to certain media there's a lot of media like yourself Molly who's not seen it before up. So we thought -- be a great opportunity to come here show it off and the response we're getting just like we did at. Brian Todd has literally been talking about this since. When you see it it will blow your mind -- this is glasses free 3-D display had a hand held gaming the exact. Glasses free 3-D. But more than just glasses free 3-D really it's -- a whole new form of entertainment all of the different technology all the different elements that -- built -- to device really allow for new experiences new forms of gaming. And that's what we're really exciting about. In addition to what you're able to see in a 3-D mode on the screen. The screen itself is dramatically better than anything that's ever been done before -- a -- and a perspective on it and elements that -- to the experience is breakthrough. So were we're very excited will be sharing more details -- a and event on the nineteenth of January. Not an -- world. At Nintendo world which is happening later on this weekend. In Japan they're showing off a range of games how games -- progress since. Everything from first party to third party and it's a consumer event because you know here in the US consumers have gotten -- see a lot of information about the Nintendo Wii DS that is not -- really happen in Japan and they're getting for their own launch in February. Now -- on the one -- a little while it -- mentioned because we cover everything technology. And you it outright said that it -- Microsoft or Sony you guys were kind of seen as your biggest threat. In portable gaming but Apple. So you can expand on that a little bit well you know it to I have to statement that quote was taken just a little little -- a lot of that context. Really what we say it Nintendo Wii are a content company were an entertainment company we compete with all forms of entertainment. Whether it's printed newspapers magazines. Computers. And of course. Mobile phones mobile gaming it's the wide range of entertainment that we compete with and the reason for that is we all have 24 hours -- -- -- We all have to spend time with different devices and so my device has to be more compelling than what you could do some or else and so. That's our competitive said it's very broad but that's what allows us to create content. As varied as personal trainer math. Two that you have a Super Mario galaxy two and. Now the DS is -- juggernaut for you guys it's it's it never seems to slow down -- that means it. Do you ever feel -- -- I can't imagine what it feels really good did you ever feel pressured to -- this device somehow you know we've heard rumors all -- -- about a PSP phone. When you look at improvements. Do you ever feel pressure to go farther than something like a really innovative thing. You know we we always view our business through the lens of entertainment. And we will do interesting things if for example there's voice over IP technology in the current. But we do it from an entertainment perspective. What our competitors do and how they look at their business that's up to them for us it really is how do we bring smiles on people's faces. I'm quite sure what device and get people to say wow I've never seen anything like this before. That's really Armonk Trent how -- we trying -- -- -- -- that that's the -- that's what I did when I decided it must be funny to see adults act like kids and candies are literally like like. I have to say probably the best part of my job. Is walking around you know it happened waited. The original DS it happened with the -- it's now happening with Nintendo three yes when I -- the device and I get this reaction of people saying wow. I've never seen anything like this before its breakthrough. Now it it puts a smile MySpace. Now one thing you did mention is the -- And we know you'll need to know people don't really think about launching because sometimes they -- it -- -- -- -- really been innovative. From a technology standpoint we're -- -- the game boy -- -- with a touch screen and the Wii was the most controls and now you're kind of at a point where it's some might argue that okay the PS3. And Xbox are technologically. And certain aspects. Better than what the -- -- -- are we going to see anything in 2011 where the we stepped up its. Parlor game. -- to -- first we are always thinking about what's next -- And we do that from the date we put the closing touches on a device we begin thinking about what's next. In its own lineage if you will. In terms of what's next for -- what's next for Wii is more great games don't right now this is the point in the life cycle where we need to be selling a tremendous amount of software which we are doing. The software that we had the last year in 2010 has been phenomenal personally I'm looking forward to games like skyward soared. I'm looking forward to playing Super Mario -- so there's a lot of great content that we have yet to show off on week. Once all that happens then we could start talking about a new device. The do you even with the existing device you have plans or strategy around all of the kind of set top convergence that seems to be happening with. -- console -- becoming that that kind of the center of your media existence at home keeping that we will move in that direction. We already have with -- Netflix right and and we've enjoyed some tremendous. Successfully at Netflix. The data we see the data that the Netflix team -- in terms a number of people spending time weighted Netflix on their Wii has been just phenomenal. So we'll continue to explore what we could do with that but I would suspect for us. Leo our next system might. Push the envelope on animal. And then I mean as long as happy here it is that it's been telling us they're not saying anything more about the media at -- Might chat -- instant they really would love to know if you can give us any kind of the timing estimates about hobbies how to ABS price range. So what else -- equinox we've already said publicly that will be launched in March. And that's about as much as if I if I throw out something that might Writely is like this that -- with march 10. Or march 7 we're gonna go day by -- decade and although it so constantly in what you can tell all. Please take my money -- certainly take your money and that's when we -- it. And but we'll be announcing launch details on the nineteenth of January. Mom and dad and really well work work work here at CES. Really to take advantage of the opportunity of -- -- not seen the device and let them experience with them for themselves. And to hear that laugh yeah that's kind of power on. It absolutely yeah you -- you could see on the outside the two cameras that allow YouTube lied to take. Two. You can open up and see that we've got this depth slider which allows you to tune in. For your own eyes what type 3-D experience you want what you feel comfortable on or off the you could -- all the way off and just enjoy the games -- two. You've got this circle -- Which -- we have found is a great way to experience manipulate through -- 3-D world. In addition to use that traditional AV XY cross pad that we have. To screen so -- fully backward compatible with all of Nintendo's DS. It -- so it's. It's a fantastic device the cameras on the on the front -- font because like -- the demo at. You there -- one demo where you -- like take it yourself and like see it in the eighty's so. You know they may not be the highest risk and apparently publicity -- but it's just it's again it's that child on and -- -- day yet. That treaty there's there's a fun thing you could -- where you could take take your photo. And it'll create -- me. And and then etiquette and that's my hair -- -- -- -- -- -- anything in many instituted a little bit but color quality and you guys to do that I'll be like soul. Well I know that you have to protect epilepsy yes I really appreciate that times have I absolutely think you're adding that we -- eagerly awaiting the lines he -- great great to see you thank somebody you're -- having -- Thanks -- I Wii it will get back to the news let's check in quickly on the Verizon -- because I know at some point they were basically kind of reviewing obviously. The year that was. They're talking obviously a lot about -- -- And I know that we've got that stream up it looks like they're still. Talking about the cloud Verizon wants to be a major player in the cloud service they have network security systems available to bring this to consumers. CEO Ivan Seidenberg is on stage with the Time Warner CEO. I think that they're going to be a lot of arrived via discussion there right obviously -- -- much more than just -- open arena. If they really trying to become like the whole home provider. -- with the quadruple play yup situation that's that's about where we are in the keynote now obviously these things and I've progressed little slowly that -- -- the first. Half hours -- reviewing you know sales figures and overall strategy. That we will keep an eye on that. As we go forward. I -- I mean we normally don't tended to live guest and then go right to live press conference. Or hold it down because we're off of right here on -- a press conference at the stuff that I can't judge yesterday that's really quickly yes let's go back a little bit yet to yesterday's press conference Samsung always with a beautiful. -- gosh oh my gosh. Not as beautiful hardware or how about I station -- and LL ED LCD TV with no -- whatsoever -- like. Thinner than like a quarter of and -- China -- public standard can you get. I gotta -- for me that was pretty -- -- coming out that like well that and obviously the smart appliances as he now. But these the -- free TV is just ludicrous and two tenths of an aunt there's an interesting story in the New York Times -- actually about. How TV manufacturers are really trying to -- Keep pushing TV sales because obviously they had a bonanza TV sales when they went from you know the exceeds -- plasma and -- -- LTV. Right now the demand is really for LCD TVs and not so much for 3-D TVs and that sales are bound to drop off because most people replaced got they upgraded -- there -- CTV. And so -- you know they're talking about they're looking for ways. To keep people buying CD's and it's kinda like you know 240 -- like I did AM and 1080. BI -- edit. I wanted to look for -- it. Yeah and it and the thing is you know a lot times with these with these thin TVs you have like a base or something all the electronics are in the street via electronics industry to. Its own sense of also pushed -- they kind of started at last here. As well the first one of the few TV companies -- -- -- he has to use. To have apps built in the TV and have elegant apps were set up -- -- pushing the whole smart TV again here which is like a bevy of new apps. CNET actually has -- -- not that I'm trying to -- it specifically that I have. CNET has their own app -- on Samsung's smart TV platform is also. We're all over that we -- everywhere people everywhere. -- taken -- -- Verizon they're still talking about. They're still liking about finance and content is not the Time Warner -- on the talked about content. And it sounds like Seidenberg said that what they're gonna do is really talk about consumer devices at that 1 PM. Keynote that's happening a little bit later so it looks like that is where we're gonna get some of the sixties -- okay -- we do have a little bit of only semi related CES -- to get through -- Saturday. I know that you're probably holding off on an iPhone -- -- that -- to. For example something come that iPhone drops but if you don't care about -- latest and greatest -- Yes. I AT&T has cut yet -- yes prices do. 49 dollars at the it would it indicate that another phone might become mean. It usually does occasionally got -- handle -- exudes you know press -- -- the new -- -- but. And also AT&T is expected to -- iPhone exclusivity -- this is anything to deal with -- other trying to keep customers but. If you love it -- good service where you live and -- love that iPhone three yes. -- -- -- Also I mean just in a click. I guess that my iPhone related story that we -- put in the show. It's been reported that Apple Apple has their retail employees locked down from innocence to going on vacation. Towards the end of January. And when that happens typically something is coming out now Heather I think it might be a little too -- for iPhone but if it's the Verizon iPhone in January -- be right maybe. I've had it. Probably a little too early in my mind but something is happening there so. Have you heard some rumors about. 111. Or 111 planet like 11 -- little late November 11 being that it like well. No I have I don't know if that's pathetic people are really excited about all the ones and trying to come up with appointments and it made in some rumors that it. The Apple iPhone announcement would be -- to that like eyes although I wanted I doubt seamlessly. Rumor mongering. Speaking of aids in the year at CES the company also the carrier announced detailed plans for its four G network -- after -- network. And showed off obviously some of those -- are -- -- Ebert talked about from LT and others it's interesting though. Strategy because they're basically -- take. They're taking haven't used a two tiered approach to moving to port either gonna go to aids as the eight plus burst. Which is kind of like three and a half. ULT based -- During the second half of the year so there they're kind of like dating about kind of acknowledge there's there's that behind when other actors are in right now but again have to catch up so. And -- definitely I know that we've been doing some testing year. Of four -- something that can activity in general here and activity and it has. I'm not trying to -- -- they -- There have thereof it's okay I thought you said it's okay to -- -- -- obstacle we. Have -- up members you know whatever years years now India and Italy. Certain it'll also -- yes. Three rim recently mentioned that that support the Blackberry tablet the playbook. Will come out this summer on -- we -- -- -- And -- I I I didn't know. I -- know that off the top via my header it was expected itself and a heck I was about under glass at. The digital experience -- the era I think that it's the. They have their -- here just right here over here herself also I'm I'm curious -- the -- have even. One where you can touch running just the video demos and now because it's been a long time since they already announced -- behind glass they'll tell me gonna put it behind glass C yes. I am I guess now we -- at 34 minutes into the Verizon keynote and this as -- one of our reporter says Maggie Reardon. Okay now we're seeing stuff like Ellen DeGeneres watching herself on the Smartphone lawsuit interviewing Mark Wahlberg I really wish they'd just get -- -- news.
