CNET to the Rescue: LIVE!
Hi everyone welcome to CNET to the rescue memory -- -- at Cisco.
This is our weekly show we try to answer your tech questions make using the technology you have a little less.
Confusing as I fade to black they were joined by special guest Eric Franklin from CNET labs -- -- -- in America no problem.
Eric is.
-- system builder.
As a mine so we're gonna talk about that little bit we're going to have a couple -- -- -- from a problem products I've been using a problem and have with them some good things.
And then we've got your questions now.
People have been complaining.
All the people who love all the Mac shows have been drowning -- people who don't do not like all the Apple shows so this show only gonna try to keep it dialed back.
On the Apple questions so if you have questions about using a Mac or an iPod or an iPad.
Send -- in rescue at cnet.com we'll try to get my future show but -- -- day were gonna try to focus on non Mac stuff.
For the 95% of people out there don't use -- there aren't.
Now those -- you were wanting an update.
On mice analogy DS 411 slim update.
He predicted the two week five it's still making thumbnails of my 150 gigabyte photo and video archive.
It is now all are almost done with 2009.
While you.
-- --
Yet Picasso will make a thumbnail library for you in about five minutes on 150 -- -- this thing is still chugging through its like one -- minute.
And then it gets to -- video forget about that's a great server still usable still.
Plenty responsive but on the operations they -- wherever.
I wanna do little grotesque here.
For those of -- who are list makers as -- I have been using.
Things. Which is a to do -- -- maker for the for OS-X and four -- devices.
And what's really important for me in a to do list manager and almost all software uses that it synchronize with enough support put an entry an item in on this machine that shook the on the -- machine.
Things lets you do that but only over Wi-Fi when they're both on the same network and doesn't -- to the clout.
So I'm -- -- part of it as much I love the app and it's also expensive.
There's a new app now called flow.
Which does.
Thinking to the cloud and works on more devices but you'll have to pay for and I can't turn on this thing called -- wonder list which is free.
And has a web version.
In Mac version a windows version.
And and IOS version and may be more I don't know those are all the ones they need it is not as fancy -- glitz the quite.
As -- or things but is doing the job Aniston for free and the thing goes the clout you know that there comes in it so check out wonder list if your interest -- and make it to do list manager.
And I --
-- already helps them but I know feeling good it.
-- account with that.
Anyway again if you have a tech questions than it to rescue at cnet.com or call it -- 8774386688. Again 8774386688. No question is -- basic.
We're gonna talk a little about building your own PC speaking of things that are far from basic and then we're going to get your question.
We -- we're discussing this just before the show that I discovered that -- and I share a --
A fetish for building our own computers. It's a dying art.
Form it is it is I actually talked don't know about this a couple weeks ago we are talking about how.
Much of a pain in a yeah building your own machine can be because all the problems that crop up.
Because you're building your own machine right there's nobody to turn to yeah exactly when when something comes up in you just want to work so frustrating.
We're thinking -- -- next time it's gonna go and buy -- -- a desktop and a we have desktops.
And it turns out weeks ago my mother board started smoking.
I'm. -- on it for -- smoke complaints holding yeah there is the smoke -- like okay what kind -- -- if -- like why dish.
Now Kenneth -- palatable to protect.
It's mellow lemon no smell a little after Reagan though if I go -- -- -- think that the ozone. Home.
Motherboard at that uses an Apple Amazon and some -- -- area via. And it's not smoking and panic and the largest -- powered off really -- pull the plug really quickly.
-- that looked in outlook on the board and some chip was burnt out there.
And why you know have to go and buy new motherboard in with a new way in the motherboard.
That would.
Did have the in in my haste to Baidu the motherboard have a computer setup again -- by the correct one did the right ram they did with the human ram -- it take Alan.
Or accident back in new motherboard and outlined by NASA's welcome for my second to shut right off of what's going on here and -- figured out that.
The heat -- wasn't connecting with the processors. You know properly.
And that was his --
The that he was just rising rising right he really quickly that would shut off -- built right.
To make sure it's connected it was a in late two week where deal ends there is -- -- get it working now it's working now and I've got my idol.
About 36 degrees. That are --
-- -- --
See I like building my own machines because I've been lucky so far and -- had failures have been I was on one machine and what the three power supplies.
I had a motherboard you know slowly die on me and my last machine.
But the thing is.
Minus component failures to me it seems like home built last longer.
Because when you wanna do upgrades and it's off the shelf parts and the upgrades are available and and driver updates are generally easier to get you know -- with a Dell or.
In HP after awhile they stop supporting the machine and it just kind of bloody -- yeah.
Yeah so -- also home -- there there really isn't the reason that I really like home built is because I can pick the case then this may sound very pay the and you know just in -- that -- image but for me.
What I want because I have a four year old.
I want a computer that has a case that closes. And has nothing on the front it specially the power button right.
And I wanted to be able to lock right so the kid can't go stale data what's this and turn off the machine which he would do work with peanut butter in the drives are.
So for that reason I spent a lot of money more than I shouldn't cases and -- -- -- land leaked cases.
My my Latin of the one I have right now as a -- 11100 account which is like the 2001 model of cases when it's closed at the black slab of aluminum it's.
I was 250 bucks which is ridiculous it is for 49 dollars easy to buy it but I spent the same thing in Somalia what you get I got a cooler master race if he is there's like six years ago and I just one -- the top of the line this time that's what the problem was acquitted him most people.
All but it's it's huge and I think you mentioned that year with your case.
The heat is patient is really bad it it was it was heavy -- its hands when I would let you know we have to take it validates its.
If in the quarter so we're gonna wanna take it out -- change things but if you think -- when it -- that haters out there.
The -- well the thing about the -- Leo just so he catalyst for a minute is this an upside down case which means the motherboard is meant to on the other side --
And which is finding should make any difference except right now all these mother -- are designed with heat pipes and heat pipes are based on.
Thermal conducted and they're they're.
They depend on gravity to work okay so -- cooling on this on this case with the upside down motherboard it's not quite as good as it should be they do this so the I don't know why they do it anymore.
I mean it it puts the ports that you want -- higher or down lower compared to other cases audio ports now with this case the court case in which in the back or at the time.
No that's a new thing.
I think hey Seattle actually pretty interesting we got one and only an -- they think that's one where all the ports on top I like that idea excellent so love it they just lifted a flap off the top and you can yeah everything that going out -- exact avenue route -- over the side yard on the back -- where you wanna route them.
Yeah it's it's so much -- Edmonton.
-- -- -- the -- -- cable threaded properly people are those take your questions. First one is from --
Who says that I love this question because it lets me --
I'm going to buy a new TV to replace my first generation deal PTV that had composite cables.
It will be sixty inch 3-D HDTV 1080 PL ED -- and Bob Bob Bob beautiful --
So I'm shopping for HDMI cables and I -- that some of them now have ratings for refresh rates.
Quote delivers 100% of the data required for a 120 -- 240 -- 600 -- or higher.
Does this matter or is -- marketing hype.
-- the question --
Are you with me -- this yes its height yet.
Okay look there's a link we're gonna put in the show notes the mono price you can get a perfectly good.
44 or six foot cable HDMI cable for four dollars now.
Model -- -- -- place to go yet now you can pay a lot more for cable.
And monster has this whole thing -- -- that good better best.
And you know everybody it's just pure psychology play in the cables are bad -- and and over long distances it can make it -- exactly.
But. -- -- -- studio production from the point that it made negative and you're going to use something yet but if you -- -- TV years.
Your Blu-ray player here.
-- I read a report saying that the difference between you know these.
Gas injected bloody block cables whatever. Is -- role with high end equipment but not visible.
On especially cables twelfth -- right.
Ray was on memories there hasn't even talked to him alive yet -- and he -- an article.
Last year he did an article like the bunking all of those TV myths -- like the 120 hers to 240 Hertz.
Refresh rates -- the comes --
And -- one of the things he debunked was that.
The 120 -- at 240 Hertz refresh rate.
Don't matter in -- marketing hype and every year these. Many factors have to come -- with a new way to sell TV.
They happen.
You'll get more people -- say you all gonna give him LTV that is obsolete by new one and that's how they do it -- -- these new figures and it.
There's something to them technically inept but if it is not necessarily from you can actually see that mr. K so that's gonna affect.
