Culture
Hello everyone welcome to CNET to the rescue I'm -- the -- in San Francisco this is our weekly show -- answer your questions about technology that the tech products you use. Dispel some of the fear uncertainty and on using modern tech and join today for very special Mac. Edition of its unit the rescue Michael for Kessler. Thanks for coming -- hello thank you to offer rights the CNET blog Mac fix it which you can find -- Mac fix it dot com. For all your Mac questions them and needs check out it's a really great resource work for Mac users. If you have a tech question for -- to the rescue call us with your questions to get on the next -- 8774386688. 8774386688. Or email rescue at cnet.com that's -- most the questions coming we have an email audience. No question is -- basic or to advance and we have as -- -- Rumsfeld. That the got a tech problem -- them -- you send it along so I -- get started. Warm things up here a little bit before we get into a couple of Mac questions we have by talking about little Mac tips -- people who are Americans the rest of kind of techie but. You know I got my first Mac -- two and half years ago and I'm not really dyed in the wool Mac user and these species -- both. Little things that -- kind of help me long. One of the little things up throw it in well I'll throw you revenues to -- one other little things that really bugs me and bugged me about. My MacBook. Was that when I plugged in the ethernet cable the Wi-Fi -- stayed -- -- the like which -- have a broadcasting with. Theoretically anyway vulnerable to attacks and I was using battery. Power. Might think -- when you plug in the ethernet cable the Wi-Fi radio automatically turns off. As it should it now I thought this is -- setting in the MacBook but it's not. But the guys at MacWorld have this thing here which is the most. You know you think Macs are supposed to be easy and -- they have these two scripts you have to put into. I copy and paste it all the stuff in and works. I'm just saying and I'll put a link in the show notes if you wanna auto disable the ethernet on your MacBook you can do it. He can do little things that they can give them hack your MacBook which -- really really like. What do you recommend for people who are maybe a year to into into their -- Film let's see there's several things that that day. That I've got one of the things that especially for laptop owners and -- over -- Talk about laptops is its batteries. And many times that dealing with Mac fix it we deal with the -- People who are having. Problems with the battery -- Not charging all the layers are getting -- about 10% and they think they've still got enough power for another. Hours though -- and and it shuts off on -- up automatically goes to sleep mode. One of things you can do is calibrate batteries -- batteries every month. Two months maybe three months you'll have to do it every month it really depends on how often you do it how often -- use the battery. But charge it -- being run all the way down completely until it goes all the way into. Full deep sleep mode panic mode. It's it's not panic doesn't and it's not gonna -- gonna shut down in and lose all your -- little happenings usually goes to sleep -- press press press the keyboard it'll. Blue back up immediately when he goes knew deep sleep sleep mode it writes the whole memory confidence the hard drive and and shuts down -- as much hardware as possible. And in that mode you can. And political power now. In this mode it's it's it's the batteries completely drained basically fair and accurate than meets the system detects that -- simply -- -- and in which gives you. Plug it in and started up if you want to and let the thing completely. Com charge all the way to -- percent and what that does that sort of stretches the limits. Of what. Battery tests. -- I challenge you to fix this this kind this is and as you're on video you get better than -- at the -- This is a powerbook 140 with somebody sent us check it out they didn't Ramada this is the future computing right here and industry what happens when I -- -- the power cord. Hello -- advantage are going all day too and that's what we do. What you can do is pretty much nothing. -- that has added a way to admit this one before Apple got with a hold on removable partner in this and removable battery pack the government better at H slide that. It -- -- results -- and it's gonna be a friend and immediately went toward them puppet those are the days street. All right to calibrate batteries. Hears little tip if you are a simultaneous. Computer user use more than one computer wants check this thing called synergy. Synergy dash FO SS for free open source software dot org. It. Lets you use one come one keyboard -- mouse. And have a kind of jump from computer computer when sitting side next which other and it works from PCs across PCs Macs and I believe and Linux machines seeking to have one little console. -- and slide work round the ports really cool pain in the next set -- the mythical. What -- -- what else little tweaks to make your work like the old better. One of the things I have is eighty. I'm. Well one thing that he rather a lot of people that people uses is of course the OS-X dock right. And I have Miami. Personal preferences of how I set up my -- of course every many people load their docks full programs of people just use the -- programs that are there. And in store their programs and the go to their applications folder to get there. Their applications but. If you adopt which most people do of course it's by -- middle at the bottom screen and it's relatively large and -- people. Recognize it when papers -- a problem. Load there's little bit system but of course Apple has the options put on the left or right side of the screens -- it if you want to. And -- options are available to system preferences but in addition you can get a bunch of -- There bunch of hidden settings room in the -- on that -- has programmed into the dock but they don't support. Directly in their operating system's sleek but you can go and you can enable these are -- Search for dark. Utilities or early can you put in different places and stuff like that get -- -- and put -- in different places that the program called -- tool and which is it will allow you to access the settings and one of them for instance is to put it down on the lower left and study your screen and on the lower right and -- -- -- -- -- it further out of the way -- just being at the bottom of the screen. And from I've found that I'd like mine on the lower right hand side it's really convenient right off the site -- puts -- -- in the middle. And it frees up more -- and such realistic and resize windows and get them right fill out that -- -- you hide your dock. I don't see I do I can't understand -- -- -- thinking windows that the toolbar at the bottom I just. When I'm when I'm not using and I don't wanna take up space it one of the it. Things I found this is annoying is that -- slight delay when I wanna go down and get something I know there's a program right there it's gonna click it there. And it but if you go there and can wait for the opening click it to sometimes. And also I'm not the most accurate with a mouse and some people are very accurate as these gamers who go out there really shoot things all day long. But. I go click things now accidentally click another application all the time I'm constantly doing that and com. Having it just ratepayers and little larger than usual more that can code and click them. Writes -- let's get into. A couple questions here this is a pretty general one. Its -- specific event and something very general Jordan for Freeman asked us a my new MacBook Pro thirteen inch like it's new the 2010 model. Is all the sudden slowing down when it comes to Internet tasks. I get some a -- Internet service fifteen megabit down 35 up that's very good. My iPhone old iPod Touch and other PCs on -- -- sixteen V five of my heavily used MacBook Pro seems to be slowing down especially in streaming video. Such as CNET. Netflix or YouTube once again my other devices are fine. I cleared all my settings are thought I did or Chrome and it's still slow growth on my browsers safari Firefox and be -- little bit better. Is there something wrong with my laptop or is there quick fix what would you -- This sounds like it's something to do with with. It could well -- several options -- -- one of them is that it's. The problem with the system itself like some some underlying process in the whole system in in just that laptop and since it's not happening on on multiple systems it could just be in the browser itself and it also could be in some shared resources that the browser uses an. Many times. Plug ins such as flash or flash plug in which -- views on YouTube button also -- -- the others and CNET CNET yet we have. All the flash -- -- sometimes he'd go in their update the flash. A plug in can't remove. Flash and reinstall it -- and one other thing you can do is is if your systems running slowly you don't know what it is. -- -- the first step is -- general maintenance routine and in in this. You know people -- what's what's a general maintenance routines like -- janitorial tasks. A one of them is clearing catches on your system -- variety of programs out there are one of them is on XO and white acts. Com Mac janitor -- there's -- keeper and that some of these utilities. Costs. Twenty dollars some -- -- three. And they -- have options to. Clear caches. Clear preference files and other temporary. Files that the system regularly uses and updates -- these files are corrupted at all sometimes that the program can and cannot. Start acting funny -- the system can act on yours runs slowly. And so in general meet mr. maintenance routine to generally be just reboot the system now he hadn't done that in some people don't read that their systems and over time -- its cash is built up with. With -- files reboot the system into safe mode hold hold down the shift key will -- metal clears some of the -- is a dynamic. Link light -- record -- dynamic cast that that gets the gets updated so reboot system holding down shift holding them shipped Kia and that leftists some crossed out of it was if bush is some font caches and anger and various catches. It also. -- dozen animal to Newton and she can boot the system -- is running normally and then re booted again okay. And us that when you're in safe mode stuff like certain like Bluetooth won't work then and various other. -- -- Features won't work but then you'd be recruited normally and try again -- -- try -- the catches is is the other thing. We have on Mac fix -- if you search for general maintenance and we have a a big. A big sort of procedure of what -- Dina first thing is is is get prepared with your utilities that you've got. Now related to this might my dad not most computers have -- -- world. Has been a PC user for ages and recently got an iMac. And is asking do I need anti virus. You know what -- how to -- Defrag all the stuff like over the years taught him to worry about here and I need to worry about the same stuff he's asking me and frankly. I mean artists are gonna Mac is between that you're into an illness that should I should -- -- It depends leases cores on. Com and terms of viruses. There are at least. Currently no known viruses actual viruses. Sure sure sure. For -- virus has been -- that of malware that would get into violence self replicate neither and a filer as a worm as an independent. -- program that will replicate and spread itself. It all the malware that's. Out there for OS-X requires user input. And somebody has to run a program script and install -- And and get it running. And there is minimal amounts of of of malware and for OS-X so if you're text if you're savvy -- -- have some street smart athletic. Like the column about computers don't go and does -- all these malware sites anything that underground sites that they're distributing files lot of pure -- -- networking. Is -- basic idea it's free it looks too good to be cute or you know. If you just using your your your computer for general. Office and tasks then if you and you should be alright right now it's not but nevertheless it is something that -- corporate environment or public network if you have. Have. Things you'd like to protect having -- antivirus utility is walker aren't. So you know there's several out -- -- news we got a question from -- -- who is this related he said during the boot process for current Mac after the bong and there is a gray screen that appears and remains until the OS starts loading I assume this is the period when the -- five -- Is there a way to view what is happening during this process I've been asked my employer to find a way to either -- view orders loading during this phase of the boot but -- -- -- and -- -- -- -- Employers curious about this information since one of his max spends about three times longer than his others on the screen and he wants to know why it's taking so long. -- and I actually. Get my Mac doesn't look nearly as quickly as -- used it what what can we do to understand what's going well so in terms of understanding what's going on. OS-X. As a consumer OS the trying to make it look pretty -- that the -- greens and blues greens a little spinning characters. -- to get behind that you -- for boot incidents. Proposed -- Which is like booting into safe mode or into a single user mode Easter start -- commands you just press -- -- command of the -- right after that. Long didn't sound. And the system will. Start but will -- will. Prevent putting up that green screen and show you just like when you're loading up Linux -- Or -- early versions of windows sees -- -- some some of the text of some little polluting. Drivers in configurations that are happening during. And if there's applause for whatever reason it's trying to access network resource -- sees some some. Specific. Process that sort hanging there it's like it's taking a -- right there you maybe that's the source Rican -- technician here. Apple supporters. -- Mac exit via Angela and let us know we can. Help troubleshoot any other general tips for speeding up -- Mac. You know what it's it's. It depends -- if there's an actual problem if you want -- if you wanna speed up the boot sometimes. You can just you know who is it safe mode and -- try rebooting again and sort of general maintenance going back to the general guidance at the but tools again. And at one thing you can do is if you have your hard drive's full moon and discipline and people tend to do with all these movies and music that they are cramming on the computers these days. A few if your hard drive is getting low on memory -- your system swapping out virtual memory and a lot of times it's takes a lot of you get a lot. File fragmentation -- the drive -- to go back and forth and and -- and action that can slow things down all float that's though. Yes offload. Files keep your drive you know rule on 10% -- in -- -- -- 200 gigabyte hard drive the point would this be true and -- -- the as well. Themselves they pretzels that drives are a little faster Internet access times but so the overall beauty better performance but yet it's it's true -- Here's another one from Jeremy I have one Wi-Fi connection that requires a password any time I use it. This is the only connection that does so on the MacBook and -- no other device I deleted the profile but it's still -- -- for the password each time. How to write delete the profile on this machine to -- need to go with the well so we have the year -- -- Settings. There are two. Places where -- where the -- and that is where it -- disorders profile. Four Wi-Fi settings and sometimes it depends on the type of like by sitting at Arlington a WP a -- enterprise. A setting verses just a personal -- -- BEP password. If you go to the system prepped to go to the network settings. In their needs and settings for the Wi-Fi connection you'll have a -- The profile itself. And you concede that going in and delete that sort of had at the system recreated what that helped went with -- that's always asking for after -- to -- -- -- -- it might and a I the other option is to. Go to the key chain which is a good teaching -- the teaching access utility -- -- applications folder. You. Have to Keating's when you're -- teaching and once the system key chain wide by. Connections network connections anything to sort of system based that's stored in the system each and as opposed to the the logging teachings reader personal applications that -- that that. The key chain. For that the system -- changes go into that. That one locate below those Wi-Fi. Network password and -- And then it if you have for it that there's a problem with the key chain if there's a the wrong aspirin and it thinks it's right expert who knows. The notices get rid of it start your attention again -- and try to cut the -- but that -- -- Jeremy let us hope it works here's a question from your host. How come every time I eject my all right I I have a time machine -- -- little portable drive plugged into my USB port. When I close my Mac. And take it and unplug the drive and take it to work I don't power down and it I open it up again or -- Do some work go home plug it back in and says there was a problem with your -- -- was not ejected properly -- -- have to eject my hard drive when I close it. And it's just the time machine drive -- -- have to do that. Yet to do it because what happens if I don't. Know if you don't. -- -- Chances are you won't hurt anything there but there is a slight chance that you will -- something the could hurt something rather. The hard drives locally mounted hard drives and they -- they -- the system sort of melts then they dealer are given a date on what's now -- -- in the volumes directory -- Boeing's director thing going that. -- your from your Macintosh HD and and any other locally mounted file system. Is is -- access from and it's it's there for quick access thing in in windows and other other -- -- some other operating systems you can. For some drives. You can quickly and now and -- like USB drives for instance in windows even you have to. There are currently previous versions of -- at them anymore there in not anymore but they but they've. Use you can numb yeah stop them and stuff like this but but -- into the OS-X the keep that -- -- -- drive access at active. And so why do they do it that way. Now and now it's one of those who think it's one of the things but they couldn't. Out on up for an external driving habit and now now and then when you accessed it -- sort of keep a little. Link there to it when you access it melted again if you have -- A file an alias or shortcut to a file on the drive you keep it on your computer and you keep the drive and mounted you double click that file it'll mount the drive and then. Access the file. But then if you stop using that drive I guess there's no real way to say are you done using the drive right. Maybe there's timeout period you can you know that that that you could beacon program into it but currently they not done -- have to go and make -- you reject that. Picture it's it's done before you put the computer actually if you shut it down it will -- -- drives. Thank you for clearing that up from India and I try to remember every time that I forget amenities as happened with more than once that I go home and I and it and you know I just put my computer and plug the drive and and it tells me that it can't use that that time machine backup of the disc is damaged. And then I reformat the disk is just back up and I'm OK again that's like forgot a time machine is a little more picky then ordered other -- because it uses it uses. Multiple hard links one -- have multiple. But wholeheartedly c.s though it's there's one source of data per -- than many references to that seen. -- source and on the drive in that. It's set up is is a little unconventional. Mom and so. When you have GB hard drive that you are. Just. Yank out your system there and it there's chance that some directory structures can get damaged -- these Japanese drives -- journal. You should be journal what does that mean -- journal that is where they -- -- pollutants but the source where they start writing. To the -- it helps protect the data on the -- and in case the power editors inadvertent. A disconnect -- -- failure of sorts. -- in. Before writing the full file to disk right to that the journal -- to write to the days and that that. Allows that prevents the but prevents the disc itself from being sort. The files from being pregnancy rate from. While. During an immediate you know there's. -- -- -- -- Well that's it for our Mac questions you want takes them on non Mac questions what they can -- stamp your contract let's give -- -- and here's what actually this is -- This one is the one that got bounced out of last week show for timing and I apologize to mark from Winnipeg for for last week but we're gonna try to answer -- that this week. He says -- -- a two story Condo plus a basement. I have a wireless router and modem in the basement but my brother's laptop which is -- wireless is on the second floor his connection keeps dropping -- need to move the router -- the main floor. But -- a -- components that are not wireless. I'm in the basement so we can't really move the router so he did try to connect my breath he says I tried to connect my brother with ethernet over power line but -- -- worse. I don't want to run cables along the floor and down the walls so I was thinking about trying out ethernet over coax are these any good. And that's that's the question so. What are we thinking I have power over ethernet -- ethernet over power as well and isn't half streak to incredibly slow the Emmy award is the fact it works and premier. If that's that's that's always been my impression that he you have yet -- -- this huge DC circuit and areas its its you to send small data stream over that and it sure it'll work in the they have to eat the whole bunch normally I had my Windows Home Server and over the -- -- gigabytes of backup apartments of hopeless. The anyway so what we think about ethernet over coax and that in there are -- can -- -- on Newegg or Amazon where -- those were. The work -- -- -- you have the infrastructure it'll be faster than and then yours over the paralyzed for sure. It really depends on so the building if you if you wanna dual wireless option we have an extender. Wireless extender. You can get -- a is in those situations you have on your laptop or on those for the router itself you can get -- more powerful. Receiver yet I get a -- things we could get a a bridge or which would be yet one over that which -- via an external Wi-Fi receiver with ethernet out. Right yeah and for that would be probably -- more powerful radio they could put up on the second floor. Run along cable. The -- where you're talking about here is an extender range extender -- can never -- which lets put in the middle house where exactly it's -- relay and X and yet take the signal from the basement and re boost it as ago that there -- and vice Versa. He's and in terms of Apple's technology that I'm. A little more familiar with the -- for instance the airport extreme base station and -- easily airport. Express boxes -- -- and Andy can be used in multiple locations to. Extend that wireless range. And you can view that patent now. The effectiveness of that depends on building structure the other building a whole bunch of pipes and wires coming up and -- one ball that's gonna provide a block to the reception. -- and an even if you had Extenders that could still posed. Problem with with perception and so that wireless over Adams -- ethernet coax. Cables. Is another option -- depends on on what you hat if I'm I'm I'm a big and a wired IR Tyler idle I'm old fashioned they know -- -- hand -- I have my laptop here and nine and my house I got it connected directly tonight. A -- -- systems with the hardware yet a good -- if it's that I -- ahead I have the wireless to -- and I enjoy that when I go outside nod but but one and inside -- Put it in -- little thing and I will -- will sign up here that quality of a wireless keyboard. If bogus I'm not you don't move the key unless -- you're putting in on the couch. -- -- -- Sort of a weird positions people find themselves -- until it's too and we'll get a long court but I mean that I mean yes the aesthetic is nicer -- for Apple where you know Steve Jobs -- anesthetic he doesn't want anything except the screen -- exactly because he could kill the keyboard he -- what does that very first iMac commercial -- -- with the and Jeff Goldblum. Talking and for -- -- -- design that going around -- typical -- kind of and chuckling to himself -- he's doing is plugging in a phone line and keyboard yet and that's it in and the powers known. And have the -- jumbled mess of cables that determine -- -- PC world isn't it you know. Anyway that's all that and yet that's what. Frank Gomes says I volunteer for a nonprofit and we need to share many documents. Long term like word excel but -- that are with other members of the board. We need be able to everybody -- to edit and update them the -- -- need to be secure I'm told we should use the clout. We do not have a lot of money. What options do we haven't what was the cost will listen this is initially questioned if you are non profit you are in luck because Google apps. Which is Google docs which is that that the cloud -- -- used at simultaneous editing and group storage of documents which is what. By the way we use here to do -- shows -- share Google -- Google apps is the corporate version of that it is free. We're not for profits under 3000 people. So check it out google.com slash apps or just look up Google apps for nonprofits -- that at all. I v.s Google docs avenues to Google apps and a percent but but yet there there's -- to Google apps is probably does. The they are solutions and years they have their photo galleries at the calendars they have the those documents themselves and -- all in -- In her here in case we continue excuse -- Fill out if you have a bunch of old word and excel files that you need to have access to you can either import those into Google apps hand. Access than you might have some translation issues or you can just use Google apps to store the files in -- as an attachment to an email. That's your. What the -- -- in a time. -- let's -- one last one because this is from Africa and Politico. This is regarding the family that has a teenage World of Warcraft user who was the bandwidth -- from last week remember. Whenever he gets on plays games everybody else -- Internet access drops to nothing or come close to nothing. We got two emails on this one thing one fill the developer from Boston said there's one other -- likely to cause. Some games just use a lot more bandwidth and -- and they -- things. When I play I -- -- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare two or black -- my wife is unable to get onto the net through either the Wi-Fi or Internet or ethernet. I know I'm doing nothing to that effect the battle for the whole house but still -- sometimes. Even when I'm not yet in the game -- just waiting for want to start think the reason is because of the voice chat aspect of these games. I'm normally playing at least one friend and I'm connected and chatting. Weren't Comcast and Boston so this really shouldn't -- -- this is interest thing. Because what you're describing here either with your game or with -- -- -- very low -- with property via uses the thing with voice chat though is latency. -- not mean so -- the speed of the that the bits going from point a to point B. But the lag it takes from when that you start sending to one thing -- if you think of that latency as them. You think about sending a a -- packed in FedEx yet you could send. Terabytes and terabytes in a male and legal overnight and the band -- would be measured in. Mega bits per second very high exactly the latency is what kills here -- you get to chat because it takes you know 24 hours a defect we can -- the other when. CNN they have a corresponding Iraq somewhere in the anchor rules they have what's going on in Austin. Osman. -- and then there's -- response coming back high Def in high Def so high bandwidth low latency. Some of the thing that the way the routers try to fix the latency issue for gaming and for voice over IP which is very latency intense a sensitive applications. Is they have these things -- QOS quality of service settings and when they see a latency dependent app. They may dial up the quality of service and it may possibly impact other applications it shouldn't but -- might it may impact. And definitely it but but. It won't necessarily cut them off -- and it sounds like in some of these situations is there's been this person's situation that they have. One person gets on starts doing something -- -- nobody else can -- thing here and if there's a significant lag the opinion pages start taking a few more seconds to load that's expected behavior in some sometimes sometimes people when they go and start doing their games and doing other things as well downloading files in the background. Even though that might also interfere with the -- but. But they have come. In -- these these. That latency issues yet it of the boat -- it's a CA. Taylor machine but it's a port latency. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- If there's a problem for whatever reason and yours in your system and you're set up your trying to get -- Com. Addressed if there's if the router. Is has these -- technically supposed to support these these programs and and this this -- technology. But one computer just can't. Get on. -- -- -- So related to that we got a question -- call an email rather from -- Who said exactly that said during the show he took question about -- -- -- problem where one user was hogging all the bandwidth. I recently had the same problem myself by the second gen MacBook Pro G wireless hooked up. Through the wireless on an older too wired DSL modem which is also a -- wireless we just bought my wife a MacBook air and wireless as soon as she started downloading patches to machine I lost all Internet. Not even paying worked on the other machines. As soon as a download stopped I was fine. So what he did under it says is I bought a new N router and the problem is gone. And the only thing I can think of is that it was simply taxing the older router to the point that it could only handle one connection at a time the new dealing extreme N router fixed everything. It likely wasn't. Taxing it to the point where it's just gonna blow up for something like that it's on its -- -- It's probably just an incompatibility with the way -- router implement some of these protocols and technologies and it should work with Apple's technology or with the PC technology or both together but for some reason. When one is working the other one. So you shouldn't be this way they shouldn't be displayed -- -- -- that is cheap. Is the solution is cheap and most routers out there you -- to wireless strategy can get them for nineteen dollars and that's a pretty cheap one but you know anything twenty to fifteen dollars -- get to a updated -- new router that many times that there's also -- you don't necessarily need you to go out and get a new -- sometimes it's just. Reset the router said it up again from from -- just disable some of the features on it many times they have meaning you -- print servers and all kinds of of of -- Features that you could that you could. Enable turn -- -- try seeing if the manufacturer has a firmware update. That sometimes will will. Clear many of the -- that's actually probably the one of persons should do is go out and see if there's. Including net -- website look at your model number go to of -- support agency -- a firmer update on -- router configuration page should be atlas. Looked up somewhere where -- the firmware version and compared to the latest version updated track if you're having problems. You that before going on purchasing a new one way but at the very least you can do is go out. Getting new firmware. Get a new router Boise -- I will I will say that's what we're at a time but. You can do this or you can do that parent route and build your own router out of there because the act -- to give you -- have no capacity issues but -- and a and it'll -- and -- Billiton limited and maintain it exists. Updating firmware and a router always scares because if you blow it. Then you're off the Internet. You know you go get -- go to best buy get a router at about that don't don't unwrap -- -- -- -- shrink -- yet into the firmware update -- the -- I just think it's exactly like -- return policies to protect you so much for joining us church where we find -- your stuff.
