>> Hi I'm Josh Goldman, Senior Editor for CNET Reviews and this is a look at the Canon Powershot SD980 IS. It's Canon's first digital elph with a touchscreen interface. Instead of going all touch base with the controls, Canon plays it safe by using both buttons and touch controls, letting you choose how you wanna use the camera. For shooting, you can use the screen for focusing on a subject, switching modes or shooting photos vertically, thanks to an onscreen shutter release. In playback, you can scroll through images or zoom in and out on them. You can also program gestures to delete photos, add them to favorites or start a slide show. The SD980 also has Canon's active display technology, letting you zip through your photos by tilting the camera, see them one at a time with a quick shake, or play and pause videos by tipping it forward. The camera's not all about the interface, though. It's a 12 megapixel camera, with a 24 millimeter wide angle lens, and a 5x optical zoom. The wide, but short body is designed around the three inch wide screen display, which is kind of a waste for shooting photos at full resolution because you end up with only two and a half inches of diagonal space used for a view finder. It's good for capturing HD movies though, which the SD980 does, but you don't get use of the optical zoom while recording. Photo and video quality are both very good, but not always the sharpest and performance is average for its class, though its shot to shot times are a little long. I'm Josh Goldman, and that's the Canon Powershot SD980 IS.
